ESXi 5.5 and RAID

Good afternoon

I recently bought a Cooler Master case and build a virtual server. The specifications are:

CPU: Intel Core i7 3770 K @ 3.50 GHz

Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER Inc. P8Z77-V (LGA1155)

Hard drives: 3 to 2

I chose to install the latest version of ESXi (5.5). The first question I had was the NIC not recognized. I could correct this problem by injecting an e1000 driver into the ISO using ESXi-Customizer.

The next issue, that I met him, it's the software RAID I built out of my Asus motherboard is not recognized by the installer of ESXi. In the BIOS, I have:

Version of the BIOS 2104

Intel virtualization technology - enabled

SATA - RAID mode

3.6 TB RAID5 (condition: in good HEALTH)

I spoke with Asus this morning and told me that everything was going well at their end. However, they said that they do not specifically support VMware products. He suggested that finding an Async driver to add to ISO. I can not find it and have found conflicting reports of whether or not this configuration is still supported.

In short, my P8Z77-V RAID array can be seen by ESXi 5.5 and if so, how?

Thank you

Eric

Software RAID controllers are not supported with ESXi.  If you plan on computer using a RAID system on board, you will need to install a hardware RAID controller.  Trademarks of Adaptec or LSI would be a good starting point.

  • Problem of ESXi 5.5 and RAID

So I have an ESXi host and RAID problem with a motherboard for Intel Server S1200V3RP. Basically, the problem is that the 5.5 ESXi host is not recognizing the RAID array set up with the utility integrated. See the images below for what I mean.

I did some research and my research has pointed out to me the possibility that this on the Intel Server raid controller is not actually a hardware controller but a piece of software built using the computer as controller. My research basically tells me that ESXi is super picky and don't play well with fake RAID. Although I may be wrong on this subject the behaviour of ESXi and each site Web I found says that this may be the case. I tried integrating storage and RAID drivers in the iso ESXi, I tried to update the BIOS chipset with the deployment server disk, and the management and I tried a USB installation with the drivers but nothing seems to solve this problem.

Since ESXi does not the table as something other than dedicated disks, I tried an inventive work around by choosing the AHCI BIOS and install ESXi 5.5 mode host on a dedicated disk (volume 0). Then I switched back to RAID and used the Intel Rapid Storage Management utility to configure a RAID5 to three remaining disks. It seems to work very well and I was able to access the vsphere ESXi environment. However I couldn't see the RAID volume again on vsphere storage.

I've plotted a plan where I could load the drives as individual data on the host and virtual server stores use the disk management utility or another program for RAID 3 hard drives together so that they appear as a single volume. However when I booted the system upward it appeared that the integrity of the RAID5 degraded after the addition of each drive separately (probably because he had to load a VMFS on each disc, thereby breaking the table). So this probably won't work (and even if it's possible, it's probably unnecessarily complex).

So yes, I don't have really a clear idea of the place where to go to get the RAID controller integrated to be read by ESXi. I was told that there may be compatibility issues between VMware and my Intel server model, but I checked and its on its list of approved so compatibility it couldn't be her. I guess I could just stick with dedicated drives and load the HARD drives as data stores, and then use software RAID across virtual machines - but I am concerned about the way in which redundancy will include when we drive finally fails (could I just Exchange on as a hardware raid?). I always thought that software RAID (especially on windows server disk management) smb read and write speed is terrible compared to hardware RAID.

Anyone know a solution to this problem or where I could go from here?

ESXi is not 'super picky' here. This kind of fake-RAIDs that are so common on desktop PC motherboards and entry-level rely on specific drivers provided by the hardware vendor to work really. And suppliers basically only provide Windows drivers in the first place. Any other non-OS Windows would be faced with the same question. Try installing a Linux and that you will not see your RAID volume either.

Yes, your motherboard does not use a real independent of hardware RAID but a cheap RAID/fake-software controller. See the Intel website:

    AZEL,

Can you give us more details about your current environment?  What is the size and the data store space used? Do you have any storage of additional network attached to the host (for backup purposes)?

My assumptions of your post do you have 1 stand-alone host with ESXi 4.1 aready installed and you also have a local data store on the same host, but you want to re - install ESXi 4.1 while keeping the contents fo the data store.  Is this correct?

I would like to know what RAID modes are supported by the RAID option on this forum. I can't seem to find this information anywhere does support at least 1 RAID when you have two drives?

Any help would be great. Thank you.

This system supports Raid 0, Raid 1, Raid 5, and Raid 10 configurations.

  • ESXi 5.1 and VMFS-3 data warehouses

We have an existing environment to ESX 3.5 Update 5 7 host and an EMC CX3-10 x iSCSI SAN. We go to decomission 2 ESX hosts and replace them with hardware ESXi 5.1 and recent guests. We realize that we no longer able to manage these hosts ESXi from our Virtual Center 2.5 console, but these two hosts will run a minimum number of virtual machines (Exchange 2010 multirole) that don't use VMotion, DRS and HA.

Our understanding is that ESX5.1 can see and use VMFS-3 data warehouses. Is it true that, once we plugged the new 5.1 ESXi hosts to our SAN and you can see all the existing LUN that we should be able to stop the virtual machines on two ESX 3.5 hosts and start the virtual machines on the host ESX 5.1 computers?

Everyone has problems running ESXi 5.1 with VMFS-3 data warehouses?

Some data warehouses VMFS-3 existing could be improved to VMFS-5 because they are only used by the virtual machines that work on 5.1 ESXi hosts. But some of the data warehouses VMFS-3 existing is not extensible because they are used by the virtual machines running on ESX 3.5 other hosts. In other words, a single virtual machine can have virtual drives running on the VMFS-3 and VMFS-5 warehouses of data at the same time?

    Thank you

VMFS version isn't a problem. What I am more concerned by the fact that your storage system is not supported by ESXi 5.1.

  • The VM OS installs (ESXi 3.5 and 4.1)

I tried to create a working VM on ESXi 3.5 and 4.1 on a Dell 2850 for the last 2 days without a bit of luck.

No matter what I do, the result is either 'operating system not found' (when you use the computer settings default virtual for CD/DVD) or the console window just sits there indefinitely with flashing underscore in the top left corner of the screen when I try to map VM CD/DVD to: welcome CD, ISO image of data storage local client CD or ISO local client image.

I tried with Win2k3 and WinXP OS and have the same results with both.

I made sure that the config of the BIOS was configured to boot from the CD as the 2nd option in all cases.

I have no idea what else to try?

I second everything people have said notably that the disc probably isn't bootable download / bad / bad ISO file.  A simple test is to simply start on a physical computer drive and see if it loads in the configuration of the installation.  You can always cancel without affecting the current installed OS after checking that it works.  Make sure that the CD/DVD is set to connect market, etc... I'm sure you already know.  These disk sizes should be around 400-600 MB in size.

  • How to correctly record the ESXi 4.0 and vSphere Client for free?

    Hello everyone.

Can someone help me with registration

of free VMware ESXi 4.0? I am totally confused with the process I

    certainly do not understand.

My goal is to install and use ESXi

4.0 and manage via vSphere client with free licenses free of charge for

more than 60 dayes. Is it possible?

    Installation of its products

gone without problems, but failed to save. I found a few

suggestion on other threads, but nothing helped. Give me a hand please,

    I will be grateful.

    I'll write what I did:

    1. I went to the http://www.vmware.com/products/esxi/ site.

    2. I read that I can get the free license for VMware ESXi 4 and VMware vSphere Client.

    3. Decided to download this software, registered and was redirected to
the site where I could download iso 4 ESXi and vSphere Client .exe

    4. Installation and basic configuration of ESXi on the bare metal and vSphere Client Windows XP without problems.

    5. I am able to create virtual machines and use it - it's OK, but vSphere Client know that I have to the 60-day trial.

    6. Meanwhile I received the email with "Activate your VMware ESXi license".

    7. I have
Click on the link in the e-mail and was redirected to the same
the site, where I can download the software, but on the top of the web page I can
find information and a 'ESXI licenses""this license key is valid.
"for VMware ESXi 3.5 Update 2 and later versions. So I guess it's also valid
      for ESXI 4.0. I'm I right?

    8. I would like to record my ESXi 4 software installed and the vSphere Client. Of
      I chose the vSphere Client Menu: help - & gt; VMware on the web - & gt;
Sign up for now. The site ask me "series/license number Activation".
Code"so I typed the license key. Iassume that this license key should not be placed here, because the web site of replay that: "Code of Activation of series/license number has already been registered. So how do?

As I wrote, I'm confused. How to correctly record the ESXi 4.0 and vSphere Client? What I did wrong and how to fix?

To register the serial number in your ESX4i host

Home-> inventory-> higher level (your ESXi host)

    Tab Configuration

    Left side - features licensed

Edit-> Assign new key for this host-> Enter Key

    Paste your key

    Confirm all

Your ESXi server is now fully licensed

Note: you no longer have the basic features and all the enterprise features that came with a trial license are no longer valid

  • Patching Embedded ESXi 3.5 and redundancy

    Hello

I tried to find answers to theses in the documentation, but failed so far.

I have a Dell 2950 PowerEdge server with ESXi 3.5 embedded.   I understand that I can be updated by using the tool VMware Infrastructure Update, installed on a physical server separate.  Where is the update applied? It is applied directly to the memory card Flash shipped?   When to apply?  If it fails, I can just re - apply the 3.5 version via the update tool?   Is there any built-in redundancy, so that if he does not validate successfully, I can just reboot and the old version of ESXi will still be on the map?

If there are all the sections of ESXi documentation that refer to this, please let me know.

    Thank you very much!

Welcome to the VMware community forums.   If you mount the USB drive in another operating system, you will see these partitions

    Hypervisor0 - 4 MB

    Hypervisor1 - 47 MB

    Hypervisor2 - 47 MB

    Hypervisor3 - 500 MB (is mounted as /store

H1 and H2 are where ESXi store its firmware.  H0 has SysLinux, which is the original boot loader.  It will be either boot ESXi of H1 or H2.  When you start with a fresh install, Syslinux will start ESXi of H1 and H2 will be empty.   H1 will be mounted by ESXi as /bootbank and H2 will be /altbootbank.

When you patch your host, the firmware is written in /altbootbank and the H0 is changed to start from the H2.  The next time you start H2 becomes /bootbank, and H1 is /altbootbank.  When you patch it again reverses again.

The good thing about this is that easily return you to the previous version.   Press SHIFTR on priming initial screen and you have the option to revert to the previous version, if the host has problems after the upgrade.  ESXi save a backup of your system in /bootbank/state.tgz (for the on-board version local.tgz) configuration.  If you use the SHIFT keyR after a month, any change in config, you made since then would be lost.
