.exe file association broken

So, recently, my wife downloaded a Trojan horse that I could so successfully for the cleaning of the computer. However, he left a small problem: my association of .exe file is invalid or broken. Any time I try to open an .exe file, I wonder I want to open it with. When I saw first, I said to open "iexplore.exe" with IE. That did not work. There are .exe files, I don't know even what they look like, "ssvagent.exe" who wants to open every time that IE tries to open with IE.

There are a few ways around this, but nothing that will work for everyone or would really be a solution permanent. I can open a Word file by double-clicking on the document, but not by opening Word first. I can not open IE by clicking on the shortcut, but I can't it by opening my an article on my RSS.

From what I understand, it is a registry error - but I can't launch registry patches since I have to open them with a .exe file. I am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, nevermind. I went to http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.html and downloaded the appropriate fix. However, I thought I would leave this here in case anyone else was as stupid as me.

Thanks anyway.

  • .exe file association is watered!

When I try to open any .exe program, it does not.  A msg appears saying "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Any, repeat any direct click or dbl - click here for any .exe program, even in the quick launch area, Control Panel, etc., get this msg.  Any help is appreciated.

Based on the increase of the frequency of this complaint the latter time, there must be some malicious software currently reflected that it causes.  I suggest scanning with Eset Online Scanner or Security Microsoft Scanner and then download, install, update and scan with MalwareBytes Antimalware and SUPERAntiSpyware.

The specific symptoms of exe files that don't work should be repairable by downloading and running EXE difficulty of Doug Knox file Association.  Often, the difficulty of the LNK (shortcut) file Association should be run as well.  Be sure to read the instructions at the top of the page.

  • loss of .exe files Association

I am currently sorting a laptop that had won a rather aggressive virus/malware (Win 7 Internet Security 2011 fake A / V program).

After managing to clear this off I was left with a problem in that. EXE files have associations so no program will run.
When I click on a shortcut I get a message saying "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if such is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel. »
I can get the programs to run by right-clicking and choosing "Run as Administrator" but I would like to return to normal. Tried to fix the association through cmd, but no luck.

It would seem that your registry database has been changed in order to disable the functioning of all. EXE file. You need to restore it, but cannot use regedit.exe to do. Solution: make a copy of the regedit.exe regedit.comappointed.

Open an elevated permissions command prompt by typing the Windows key + R and type cmd but don't hit . Search for cmd in the programs list above section and right click and select run as administrator. Provide the credentials if requested. When the new command window opens, type this:

    copy c:\windows\regedit.exe regedit.com

... and click on . Next type:

    Start c:\windows\regedit.com

    ... and click on .

In the RegEdit program, navigate to the registry:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Exefile\Shell\Open\Command

In the right pane, double-click the (default) value. Delete the current value data, and then type:

    "%1" %*

    (i.e.: quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk)

Close the Regedit utility. Your. EXE files must be start normally now. If the problem persists, or redone surface shortly after this procedure, your computer is still infected. In any event, running full scans with MalwareBytes and your own antivirus is recommended.

The complete procedure is detailed here , but these indications are for Windows XP, so minor changes should be made.

  • executable files (.exe files) are opened in Adobe reader.

    • My friend, I don't understand how he did it, changed the .exe on its computer files settings. He says, click with the right button on a file .exe, selected option «openwith...» "and chose the adobe reader software. Now all .exe files are being opened on the adobe reader, including the filesystem as guest, paint, calculator, browsers, uninstaller etc. Now, we can not even uninstall the adobe reader software, since even the unistaller is an exe file and will open in adobe reader. System Restore does not work. What can I do to help him?

    Hi Christophe,

If you can access the internet somehow, if you are using Vista, go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/22/reset-and-fix-broken-windows-vista-file-ext-and-type-associations-include-exe-com-sys-zip-lnk-folder-drive/ and scroll to the EXE and click or double-click it to run the program to restore EXE file associations. Once done, do the same for LNK entry. That should restore your programs. If you are using Windows 7, go to http://www.SevenForums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html . If you are using XP, go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm.

If no internet access, copy the appropriate reg entries to a flash drive on another computer, transfer to Office the 'bad' computer to and run them from there to make the changes.  Reboot and you should be good to go.

If it still does not help, try the following guide to our Member Brian M - which shows four methods that can be used to fix the Windows file associations.

    Guide: http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/fix-programs

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  • OMG WTF Adobe! -Part 2: File Association nightmares abound

On my Windows PC, since the installation of the new (and supposedly improved) CC 2015, when I click with the right button on a jpeg file and choose 'Open with', mysteriously, Photoshop is not on the list! How crazy is that?

So I chose 'research through the windows', go to the phtoshop.exe, select and nothing, nada, PS is not yet possible.

What gives?  Adobe problem?  Windows problem?  Does anyone else have this problem?

It's a nightmare!  If anyone knows the solution, please provide.

    Thank you

  • Windows XP does not have exe files

My computer has been infected by a virus that exceeded AVG 9.
I removed the virus using Malwarebytes but after deleting Windows does not recognize exe files more.
I tried to restore to a point before the infection, but I had recently cleaned up but a restore point and virus was present after the restoration.
I also checked the registry and checked all the entries associated with the exe files and found no errors... Suggestions that don't involve wiping the entire hard drive?  I really want to do it AGAIN... It would be the second time in a year.

This is a popular remedy for this condition:

Go to this site WWW by Doug Knox:

    http://www.dougknox.com/

On the left, click on the Win XP fixes, file Association fixed and read the instructions at the top of the page.

Download the EXE File Association Fix on your desktop, unzip the file and apply it by following the instructions at the top of the page, then to restart and test.

  • Unable to run .exe files during the installation of new software.

I can't install new programs because my system asking you what program use and my internet explore doesn't open automatically however my knowledge is on my desk and works very well.

Looks like your Windows file associations have to dispose. This means that XP doesn't know what to do with files by looking at the file extension (.exe for executables)., .doc for MS documents, etc.

If you don't have it you, something done for you - most likely malware.

  • .exe files does not

I had a problem with spyware earlier today and accidentally deleted files .exe, including rundll32.exe, which is apparently needed to run everything that I need!  Using the available online programs/scans was useless, because of course ironically, an .exe file is necessary for the program works!  I made sure my .exe file is associated with 'applications' but this has not fixed anything whatsoever and I am unable to do a system restore because I don't have the .exe file to make it work.  Whenever I try to run any of these (System Restore, disk cleanup, etc.), I received the box inviting me to choose what program with which to run the file, but I have no idea what to choose.  I work on Windows XP and had not any problems, until the 'XP Internet Security 2012' appeared and I downloaded Spyware Doctor to remove it.  Please help, I'm beyond frustrated!

    This makes no sense...

If the rundll32.exe file is missing, some things will not work and you will see a message like this for example, when you try to open the Control Panel, add / remove programs:

    Control Panel
Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe '.  Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.  To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click search.

Cleaning disk and system restore still works fine if the rundll32.exe file is missing, because they don't use it, so it seems that your file associations are not very well.

How can I know it?  I started in the XP Recovery Console (so Windows file protection does not run) and deleted my rundll32.exe file Express, restarted normally with the file 'disappeared' and actually tried.

    I could do this:

Go to this site by Doug WWW:

    http://www.dougknox.com/

On the left, click on the Win XP fixes, file Association fixed and read the instructions at the top of the page.

Download the EXE File Association Fix on your desktop, unzip the file and apply it by following the instructions at the top of the page, and then restart and see if your system restore or disk cleanup will launch now (you must run again - just to see if the launch or not).

No matter what you use for malware protection, follow these steps:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs at:

    Malwarebytes (MMFA): http://malwarebytes.org/
    SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if you wish.

    Restart and fix any problems.

Also note that if the rundll32.exe file is missing in the system32 folder, running sfc/scannow will not replace it because it is not this that sfc/scannow does.

Running sfc/scannow will attempt to replace the rundll32.exe file if it is missing here the dllcache folder, but if you have a genuine XP bootable with the same Service Pack installation CD as your installed SP (most people don't), you won't get away with sfc/scannow.

If your rundll32.exe file is really missing, I have one on my SkyDrive, you can download.

How can I know it?  I actually tried.
