  If the problem started right with the installation of Kaspersky AV, then you must first check the settings of the program to see if it blocks execution of downloaded files. You can also check with their support area as well to ensure that the appropriate settings.

  See if the right click .exe files and choosing "run as Administrator" help.

  I had a look around at some of the answers on the site, but to be honest has been quite complicated for me! I tried to put my XP in safe mode, but she was having none of it.

  This problem has been around for a few days now, since I got a virus. I struggled to open the .exe files, and even worse, it is that when I go into control panel I can't open anything in here no more! Not even my file system restore to a point.

  Can anyone recommend anything? This is the second time I am running Malwarebytes. Did I post the logfile when it's done?

  Reboot the laptop and access the BIOS screens.  You should be able to find a setting to disable the "touchpad" completely on the laptop.  Just make sure you install a «classic» USB mouse  Then test.

  If WMP plays the file, then the necessary CODEC WMP version appear to be installed properly, since (unlike players like VLC and MediaPlayer Classic HC) WMP doesn't have any codec of its own.

  Why PrE will not import the file, is a mystery. Have you sailed on the folder containing this file and used get the media to import it in a project, what is this file? Do you have an error message, and if so, what was it?

  Looks like your Windows file associations have to dispose. This means that XP is not
  know what to do with the files by looking at the file extension (for example, .exe for executables,
  .doc for MS documents, etc.).

  If you don't have it you, something done for you - most likely malware.
