Did a clean install on my computer. Windows Update keeps on giving 0x8024400A error code. Tried to reinstall my new system... even get the same error with this message... "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. "

Thought that maybe... that the site of Microsoft might have some problems.

I've done several installs clean over the years with this computer... never a problem until today.

A lot of research for answers, but no luck. The program Fix - IT that microsoft offers do not work... says I need service pack 3. I have SP2 and am unable to upgrade to service pack 3 or anything else besides. No third party anti spyware or antivirus running my computer... date and time are correct. Running XP Home Edition on my laptop. There, someone has an idea what is happening. Thanks for any help... DG

After a clean install on my computer... I found that Windows Update will not work correctly. I kept getting a0X8024400A error code... .along with this message... "The website has encountered a problem and can not display the page you are trying to show."

    I found the solution here...

Agent utliliy hasa of Microsoft that corrects the Wups2.dll file. Download and run the Windows Update Agent that is correct for your system.

Copied and pasted from the link above...

    CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Wups2.dll file included in the latest version of Windows Update is not installed correctly.

For scenario 1, the registry entries that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing after installing Windows XP repair. The final version of Windows XP does not contain the Windows Update software.

For scenario 2, the registry entries that correspond to Windows Update are changed back to the Windows XP SP2 version if you do not restart the computer before you install Windows XP SP3. The registry entries for the Wups2.dll file are changed by pointing to the c:\windows\system32\wups.dll file that is included in the final version of Windows XP SP2.

    RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods. Method 1: Download and install the Windows Update Agent click here to show or hide the way to determine if you are running 32-bit or a 64-bit Windows edition

To find out if it's a 32-bit version or 64-bit, open system information (Msinfo32.exe). Then check the value for the system Type item. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click Startand then click run.

      Collapse this includes this image

    2. Type msinfo32.exe, and then click OK or press ENTER.
      Collapse this includes this image

    3. In system information, review the value for the element Type.
      • For 32-bit editions of Windows, the System Type value is x 86-based PC.
      • For 64-bit Windows editions, the System Type value is x 64-based PC.
      Collapse this includes this image

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

    For a computer x 86

    For a computer x 64

    For an Itanium computer

    Collapse this includes this image

    Download the windowsupdateagent30 - ia64.exe now.

New installation on a laptop Gateway... Service Pack 2 for Windows XP (Media Center Edition)...

Have not installed anything besids the operating system.    I am able to browse the internet even if the default browser would be planted several times and then finally to allow access...  Try to download updates from Windows using IE and Firefox...  Use of IE, it describes the options for express or custom then less than a minute returns an eror:

    For self-help options:

In the event log, I see the 8 and 16 event id...  I connect via a wireless connection... also tried to use a wired connection.  Do not use any proxy Server, no proxy settings are in the browser.  Also checked at the command prompt.

Again, this is a new installation of Windows, and no other software has been added yet, so I can't blame a third party software application.

Version Internet explore is 8,00.  I was able to download from Firefox, but that's all...

    any suggestions?

SP2? Which makes life easier. :-)

    Preliminary work:

Download the installation files of SP3, IE8 and Microsoft Security Essentials, which is an effective antivirus/antimalware program. I prefer to keep these (and other useful files) on a USB key, but this is optional. Here are the links to all the installation of three files:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?ID=24 (for SP3)

(You can TOTALLY ignore the message "intended for it professionals"!)

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&ID=43 (for IE8)

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/products/security-essentials (for MMS)

    1. physically disconnect from the Internet. Also unplug all unnecessary devices!

    2. temporarily disable the automatic updates. To do this:

Start | Control Panel (switch to Classic view if not already selected). Automatic updates

Select "Turn off automatic updates" and click OK.

    3. install the SP3. Restart TWICE.

    4. switch to IE8. Restart TWICE. (Note: it is important to let IE at the level before the upgrade to SP3 IE6.) After you are in SP3, then you can switch IE6 to IE8).

    5 install MSE.

(What happens very often is that someone has their software antivirus running as they try to install SP3, which often translates into chaos! "This is why it must be done after installing SP3 and IE).

    6. make sure that firewall Windows is activated (it should already be):

Start | Control Panel | Security Center

(Now you can physically reconnect to the Internet. Update Antivirus program.)

    7. visit Windows Update to download and install only the critical security updates. Restart each time you are prompted.

    8. reactivate the automatic updates.

Now, you probably go through the list of cleaning your computer so that you cover all possible issues, you are running a Windows XP with Service Pack 2 system only (not supported.)

I'll add one thing at the beginning of the list above (try this first, if you can not make it work, you must then continue to run through the rest and then repeat this part after you're done - in fact - anything, you need to run through the list above).

Get SP3 (manually) and save it to your desktop. (There's a link here.) [You are a COMPUTER professional for now.]

    Install it.

Then restart at least a couple of times for a few minutes between each restart.

Download at least Internet Explorer 7 (if it is not Internet Explorer 8).

    Install it.

    Reset.

If you have problems obtaining the service pack from Windows Update, you can download the package of standalone update from the Download Center.

This page will say that this installation package is intended for it professionals and developers. However, you can download this file safely.

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Download the Windows XP Service Pack 3 package now

FIRST: Uninstall IE8 and IE7 if they are installed. Back to all the way back to IE6. You want other patches before you get those. Reboot after doing this.

You are not the first to ask questions about how to upgrade a clean Windows XP - not even installation in the last week. In fact, I will just cut and paste my answer here... here:

Get SP2 (manually) and save it to your desktop. (There's a link here.) [You are a COMPUTER professional for now.]

    Install it.

Now, try to get the updates through the normal web page (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) and see how much more you can get (100 +) and keep checking until you no longer have.

Back - let everyone know if it worked for you.

Well, you use an old laptop of 8 years with a 11 year old operating system - it takes a little go extra step to get things.

I guess you all hardware from the manufacturer drivers so that everything works?  You can verify that you have the latest versions by visiting manually from the manufacturer web page, support and drivers section and go through at least the most important... chipset motherboard, video, audio, network, etc.

    After that...

Have you installed the Service Packs again?
