find duplicate files

is there a process to find and remove duplicate system files

There is no process within Windows that detects duplicate files.

There are third-party programs that can find duplicate files.

I would be very careful about deleting what appear to be duplicates, including system files. They can actually not be any duplicates.

Hello. I recently installed "Disk Clean Pro" and run "find duplicate files. Most of the records found have recognizable names and so I can easily decide if they should be "cleaned" or not. However, a lot of files is a string of alphanumeric 40 who have no sense. My question is: is it 'safe' clean up these files or are important and should be left as is? Thanks in advance for your help with this. See you soon. Adrian

If you don't know what a file is, so do not delete it. Badly designed finders only duplicate check a file name and possibly the size. But two files with the same name and size may have different content or can be in two different places for a reason. What you don't know can kill the operating system.

  • Identify and purge the duplicate files

I'm running out of storage space. When I look at My Documents & Settings it seems that there is a lot of duplicates and files. Is there a process to identify duplicate files and purge them in Window XP?

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/reviews/AllDup/AllDup.html

AllDup allows you to find the files duplicated on one or several folders or drives. You can choose to match files by size, date, attributes and content comparison byte by byte and also various settings to exclude certain file types or the search folders. AllDup then analyze selected records and produce a list of all files duplicate was found. The list is organized into groups, which makes it easy to manage results and process the files. You can manually select the files that you consider to be duplicates, or you can use the options of Intelligent selection that allows you to automatically select the files based on their date or folder. Duplicate files can be processed in different ways, you can choose to delete, move or copy them to a different folder or rename them in their current location. Other features include export search results, customized search profiles, a built-in file extract, ID3 tags support and more.

  • What is the easiest to remove the "double" (type programs not duplicate file finder)?

What is the easier, more realistic (programs type not duplicate file finder) to delete files 'duplicate '?

    Moved from Internet Explorer (unknown/other)

Original title: NOT a Finder double file

Well a double-file-finder is the only realistic way.

If you don't want to use software to make life easier for you, you could do it the hard way: drag - move all files in the same folder.  If both have the same name, the system will offer to combine by crushing with the other so alone is the surplus.

Of course, that counts only if the names are the same.  If you don't want to use software to facilitate your work, there will be a lot of work.

  • How do I find my personal folders for duplicate files so I can delete them?

Over the years, I have tramsfered files work on my home computer.  I know there are several doublonnait the folders and files that I should be able to remove.  I'm looking for an easy way to do so without bringing each individual foler/files to the top and mannualy their review.  Please notify. E-mail address is removed from the privacy *.

Be careful when you remove the duplicate files.  Some files are duplicated INTENTIONALLY in Windows Vista a lot unlike earlier versions of Windows (including your personal data) using things called junction points: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb968829 (VS.85) .aspx.  If you delete these files duplicated, some of your programs will stop working (and some of your data will be lost and other files will refuse to open).  The winsxs folder keeps track of system duplicate files and the different versions of the files in the system and if you delete these files, it will mess up the connections and could cause programs to stop working or system crash.

I mean, it's be very careful that you delete TRUE duplicate files from your located in C:\Users\\Documents or... \Music or ...\Pictures or... \Videos.  Do NOT delete anything in the Documents and settings folder (stay away from this junction point).  Do not delete the system twice in different folders files because they may be needed for the work programmes which are looking for files in a specific location.  Also remember that downloaded music you paid for requires a key (which has been put in the registry when you bought the song) and if you have two copies to ensure that you do not delete the one for which the key applies (or save it on another machine or give it a slightly different name, unless you are sure you want to delete it).

These programs will look for exact replica - no drafts of a final copy that you is no longer necessary (it won't find them because they are of different sizes, different dates and different names).  Those who will have to be done manually and I guess that's the vast majority of "duplicates" you have on your system (except if you have done some copy and paste files into different folders, until you've lost track of how many copies you did and where they were all - then programs will help.

    Good luck and I hope this helps. Lorien - a - MCSE/MCSA/network + / A +.

  • How can I find several duplicate files and remove the using Windows Explorer

Somehow I see several duplicate on my computer files.  I can tell when they arrived as all the duplicate files ' _10-Mar-15_1. ' " However, I don't know how they arrived.  I think that Google Drive was the culprit, but I can't be sure.

How we (me) use Windows Explorer to find all files with "_10-Mar-15_1." and delete them all?

    I am using Windows 7 64 bit

    Thank you!!!

Windows Explorer can do no such thing. To remove recursively a certain file is easy - see below. To identify duplicates and remove some of them is much more difficult, because:

    • Are two files duplicates because
      -They have the same name?
      -They are the same size?
-They have the same file date?
      -They have the same content?
      -Everything above?
    • When they are, which ones should be deleted?
      -The oldest?
      -The most recent?
      -The batch?

Here's how to remove a certain file to recursively. Assume that they are in the folder "C:\Users\BHunter\Documents".

    1. Click the start planet.
    2. Type cmd. exe and press ENTER.
    3. Enter the following command and press ENTER:
      dir/s/b/p 'C:\Users\BHunter\Documents\_10-Mar-15_1 '.
This will show you all the files whose name above.
    4. del /s /q "C:\Users\BHunter\Documents\_10-Mar-15_1."
This will permanently delete all files with the name above. You cannot restore them.

  • Search for duplicate files

I ve seen scenarios "duplicate", before even a bunch of mac applications that helps you to find or get rid of duplicate files on the hard drive in order to save space. This isn't my case this time, however, and by the way, this isn't a weird-o case. I m sure that many of us find our selfs in a similar situation each time than in quite awhile.

    So please, keep on reading.

I have a (1) small unique file folder full of (hundreds) with no subfolder in there system and (2) one big lot of (in thousands) files, folders, subfolders, and files more... arranged in a complex scheme of directory.

Most of the files in the folder (1) have a copy in folder (2), and that's OK. In fact what I need is to make sure that all THE files in the folder (1) have an exact copy in folder 2 regardless of it s heritage.

I can go through the process of checking each file one by one and once again find its copy in folder (2), remove it in folder (1). In this way, I'll finish with a tiny bit back (1) with only a few files which´s copy could not located in the folder (2).

Is it possible to automate the process?, using automator maybe?, you know an app that can help me reach this goal?

    Thank you very much!

Conceptually, it's pretty simple - a small AppleScript, or maybe shell script and you're done.

As always with these questions, however, the devil is in the details. In this case, what constitutes - specifically - a match? are files with the same name considered a match? What happens if one is more recent/old plus grand/smaller than the other? they are still a match? that should keep? the most recent? the largest?

Once that specify you, the rest should be easy.

  • Search duplicate files which are not linked to Active Folders

I have several duplicates in my iTunes. Most of the duplicates is more related to active records. I can find how to find duplicates and I can find how to remove them, but there is no sort option that detects files that are not in my current records.

I don't know what you mean by "linked to active records. Do you mean that you have files in folders that are not related to iTunes, or your library entries that are not related to the files?

iTunes can create duplicates if the same content is added several times from outside the media folder when it is about to make copies of everything that is added to the library, or is added from an external drive that hosts the press kit that was disconnected during the launch of iTunes.

Official notice of Apple on the duplicates is here: find and remove duplicates in your iTunes library. This is a manual process and article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as the lost coast and membership of playlist, or sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library as well as a removal and recycling the file will break all the others.

Use MAJ > display > show items to reproduce exactly to display the duplicates because it is normally a selection more useful. You must manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sort the list by Date added can make easier select appropriate tracks, but it works better when executed immediately after the dupes were created.  If you have several entries in iTunes connected to a same file on the disk hard then don't not send to trash.

Use my DeDuper script (Windows only) If you are not sure, do not want to do it by hand, or want to maintain ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this background thread , this post for detailed instructions and Please take note of the warning to back up your library before deduping.

(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to temporarily view or CTRL + B to keep displayed.)

The latest version of the script can put away the dead links as long as there is at least a double live to merge his stats and membership of the playlist and must deal wisely when the same file has been added through multiple paths.

In its current form the script processes only the files that are added to the library. If you have orphaned files in the media folder these could be added to the library before you start deduping.

How can I find duplicate photos?

    On Photos for Mac?

Photos will find them for you, when you migrate iPhoto library to Photos, or when you import pictures, or transfer the pictures to iCloud photo library. on these occasions photos is searching for duplicate photos and store the originals in doubles only once. It is so unlikely, that you have an exact replica of the original images in your photo library, you can have versions however duplicate of the same photo, if you he duplicated before edit. Duplicate versions don't require storage space.

If you have duplicate pictures Photos could not recognize them as duplicates, because the original files are different in some way, Photos can not detect them.  In this case, you need a tool to search for them. Photo Sweeper can compare images based on histograms or bitmaps and detect duplicate versions, which have been scaled down in resolution or edited.

  • Mac question? -Duplicate file names appear once I have copy on mp3s

It seems that although the Compatible Mac box, it was a stretch far from easy to use or Setup for a non techno.

I figured out how to import a CD on ITunes and convert it to an mp3. Then copy it to the "rocket".

But my problem is when I copy a song or an entire album, when I turn on the "rocket", it shows duplicate songs and duplicates are in the Unreconizable folder and do not work.

This can become very confusing. Anyone has any ideas on how to import MP3s on a mac without getting these ghosts / duplicate files?

If I can't understand, I guess I'll try to return it and get an IPod. No use to me like that.

Help, please. I want to keep that player.

Your problem is that you used the Finder to copy files to the player.  Who creates the files 'duplicate' which are really containing of Finder metadata files.  They lead the players nuts.

I wrote a web page describing this problem and how to get an MP3 as the "rocket" to work with the Mac.  See http://guyscharf.wordpress.com/mp3-on-macintosh/ for more details.

The problem with duplicate files detectors is that there are files that have actually duplicates and they are necessary for Windows to function properly and the finder cannot tell the difference.

That being said, I like Easy Duplicate Finder, but it is no longer free.
