  I have a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  The HARD drive is configured to have a small partition for reserved system, Partition C for the system and the Partiton E for my files.  D drive is the DVD ROM Drive.

  Very occasionally when I try to open the my computer Explorer window is white and I get a message that I need to format the drive F.  I did not have a permanent Drive F and when this happened had no other connected devices.

  If you have a mac, you can use a utility called disk pre-installed program. Connect your external DRIVE for mac drive and find an application called disk utility, in disk utility, there should be an option to erase the external HARD drive. It may come with an error similar to what you had before, but it's certainly worth a try. Let me know if this worked for you.

  Recently I have formatted a new HARD drive and installed Windows XP Home Edition. I think that a virus infection is interfering with the connection). That's why I had to restart my computer for the installation could be completed, but it seemed to be successful that I was able to reboot without any problem.   Use utility diagnostics by the hard drive manufacturer (usually available from the web page of the manufacturer of the hard drive) to perform a complete diagnosis and zeros (low-level format) on disk.

  Try connecting the drive to another computer.  If you can read the files there, make copies of them somewhere outside the portable drive.  If you can not read files with the drive attached to another computer, then it is likely that the drive has a problem and maybe the files are not recoverable except by a professional recovery service.

  I have a Transcend 320 GB Portable drive. Yetserday till it was working fine, but now when I connect it, it shows the drive in my computer, but I'm unable to open, whenever I try to open the drive, it gives me the error that I need to format the drive to access.
