I bought a HP Portable hard Drive 500 GB with USB 2.0 to 3.0 running on Windows XP in a Toshiba Satellite laptop since 2003. I had a few problems, probably due to the low speed of my USB port, but now it seems OK, as I moved it to a different USB port according to the instructions for help.   If you have created a Linux partition on the disk, then you need to use Linux to remove it. Disk utility can not handle partitions and disks in Linux. The images you provided don't make much sense. It shows a 500 GB disc with almost 90% of accounting for 150 GB, while the rest of the drive is only 4 GBs. clearly there is a problem. You can use GParted under Linux to restore the disk on a partition full size. Set the drive is formatted using the MBR and FAT32. The OS X utility, disk utility, can read/write this format in order to be able then to re partition using the GUID and format the drive using Mac OS Extended journaled.

  The file format of HARD drive seems to be FAT32, you must format the HARD disk to NTFS to be able to manage files over 4 GB.

  If you start the computer (start-> computer), you can see the drives with their letters of player sizes and how much space is used.  If your computer is running however, I would recommend against trying to move the letters because it is likely to make your computer unusable.
