  I think this small band is called the "menu bar". Last question - I am not able to read videos I find attachments from emails or Web sites (usually reports). The section of the screen where the video should appear is totally black.

  It depends on the type of video file. If these are files .flv (such as youtube.com), you must install Flash for Firefox; you have not installed for Firefox.   Versions of Firefox 3.6 + have a feature to allow the user to hide the Menu bar.

  Press the Alt key to temporarily show the Menu bar, then open view > toolbars and select menu bar, so it has a check mark.
