  Is there a way to make InDesign CS5.5 automatically use a nonbreaking hyphen, when I paste a bunch of text with regular hyphens in it?

  Or, is there a way to tell it to treat a regular hyphen in the middle of the word, as if it were a letter; This is not to break a Word with a hyphen in it when hyphenation is turned off?

  Manually: Use Alt + command + hyphen manual inserting a non-breaking hyphen (... I use all the time on Windows, but can't remember the combination of keys Win! ).

  On a selection of text: use find/replace on iSaveurs to change all the hyphens to nonbreaking hyphens. See the drop-changes to the text for the code for a non-breaking hyphen.

  You can also:

  Add a GREP style to the paragraph (s) style you use for your text to apply a character style specifying "No Break" on the regular hyphen, which is simply this single character

  I use a spreadsheet (LibreOffice Calc) to generate the MIF for Framemaker table: stick on lines of part_numbers separated by tabs and descriptors, copy of the MIF bully who opens in the frame as a table with 3 columns with legend #, part_number and descriptor, each having a unique marker Xref with marker text based on the n/p & the descriptor. It works (including escape any Frame-special characters in the descriptors), with the exception of an additional feature, I'd like to have.

  I would like to do everything rushes into the part numbers of the nonbreaking hyphens (\x15). Using the Calc SUBSTITUTE function, I can change any character to any arbitrary string. Part numbers may have zero, one or several dashes.

  So for the chain's gross 123-456 A, where "-" is a NBH, I generate:

  < axonometric < String 123-456a ' >

  According to the MIF reference (7), or the other of these MIFS should work:

  "< axonometric < String ' 123\x15456a" >

  < axonometric < String 123< Char > 45 HardHyphen6a ' >

  They do not.

  They both throw an error of analysis to the opening in the frame.

  This does not work either:

  < axonometric < String '6 123\ a\x1545'>

  He ends up as a literal \x15 in the final table.

  This Calc function does not work either (where 21 decimal is hex 15):

  = SUBSTITUTE($RawData.A3;"-";") TANK (21) ")"

  The character is not survive copy and paste into a plain text editor, even if a 0 x 15 raw is valid MIF (which may not be).

  It's FM7.1 Unix, so I can't use the code Unicode to an NBH point (this is the road to suggest for MIF8 or later).

  The next MIF is valid, but they may require more analysis of my channels that I care to invest in:

  < string '123' > < Char HardHyphen > < string '456A' >

  I could use:

  = SUBSTITUTE($RawData.A3;"-";"' >< char HardHyphen >< chaîne '»)

  If I was sure that no partnumbers began or ended with a dash.

  IIRC, the hexadecimal values must have a space after them. It is somewhere at the beginning of the MIF manual describing the different character sets that can be used in strings.

  Is it possible to insert a non-breaking hyphen in a paragraph format (automatic numbering). That's what I have now:

  But when I use a cross-reference to this tag, and the x - ref falls at the end of a sentence, I get this:

• Disable hyphenation for a single paragraph

  It seems so simple and yet I can't make it work.

  I click in the paragraph, then within the parameters of paragraph I uncheck 'Break' and click 'apply '. But nothing happens, the text is always a hyphen. I also tried the re spelling feature - cut the entire document (no idea how this is called in the user interface (English) but that's not enough of either.

  It is a command line and should be displayed without hyphenation. If I insert a forced break (shift + return) then it looks good, but can be copied from the PDF file in one piece because of the supply line.

  By default, FrameMaker enables a linebreak, if a link is located at the end of a line. To avoid this problem, do one of the following:

  • Do not allow line breaks after a hyphen:
    1. Choose Format > Document > text Options
    2. Remove the hyphen to allow line breaks after
    3. Click apply

  This applies to the entire document. You can make this setting for all the files in your book.

  • Replace the hyphen with a nonbreaking hyphen (hyphen: Esc).

  Note that if your copy / paste code or command, it will not work properly.

  I have a text in Word 2007 with several discretionary hyphens and nonbreaking hyphens. When I import the text into InDesign through 'Place' the dash disappears.

  • Words with conditional dash are now broken somewhere else than where I put the hyphen in Word: Long-break-words could become: Longbreak-ingwords.

  You sent me in the right direction, thank you! Word does not correctly soft strokes and that's why teas disappear in ID. To insert a good link in Word: alt + 0173 on the num pad. To do a search using VBA use CharW (173).

• How return a "remove hyphenation symbol?

  Hi all

  I can't find any information in guides ref or dev on how to map a 'remove the break symbol' chassis in XML format.

  Van - are you reading this?  I saw your recent post that says to create an item that represent (in fact you were talking about specifically spaces and nonbreaking hyphens, but I think it would be similar) in ESD, but I can't tell how to do that.  It would be an element containing a "symbol of the hyhenation remove" itself - created by the practice: 'Esc n s' in the document itself, but I do not know what type of element I should create, or how.  I get about it until now:

  Element (container): SuppressHyphen
  General rule: < TEXT >
  Rules of prefix
  In all contexts.
  Range of text.

  .. so I can't say how to actually insert the symbol.

  Otherwise, maybe I could do it in read/write rules, but I don't see any framework document, which includes how to map a symbol of hyphen to repress. I don't know how the framework represents internally - as an entity?

  I forgot to add that if the sole purpose of the element is to insert the symbol of hyphenation to suppress, then the general rule should be , not . If the text value, when you enter the item, the insertion point will be inside the element, waiting for the user to type the text. Because there is no text to type, the user must move the insertion point to the outside of the item to continue.

  While I'm writing a presentation using "pages" I need to use a hyphen. Ho do I do then?

  Apart from just let Pages itself perform hyphenation for you, by activating the break in the Document Panel in the v5.6.2, Pages you must be aware of the two types of special characters:

  1. Nonbreaking space (option + SPACEBAR)
     1. The string "this word" (without the quotes) that contains a non-breaking space will end at the next line.
  2. Nonbreaking hyphen (control + command + SPACEBAR) followed by:
     1. search for U + 2011 is your non-breaking hyphen
     2. Double-click the hyphen nonbreaking to insert into the Pages to the beam of insertion.
     3. The string "hyperactive-hyphen" will wrap the entire string to the next line and does not break on the hyphen.

• How the "automatic formatting" a very long word in InDesign?

  I try to insert/import/paste text in InDesign. The text contains a few - strings of text (or "words") with more than 3000 characters. This causes InDesign to have in excess of text and is not not be able automatic flow of the text.

  When I import (or paste) the text I am shift + click on (I have also tried option + shift + click) to of the auto-enchainement downwards along the pages, but the automatic flow stop on page 16 (where the 'words' long begin to occur), although my file contains more than 200 pages. I get the little red sign below in the last text box, which indicates that I have overset text.

  I tried then click the Red sign and continue the flow of the text on the following pages, but I find myself just with text boxes empty on the following pages, each time I try click on the Red sign.

  I removed along 'words' and tried again and now InDesign doesn't seem to have a problem with my text. If the problem is caused by the long "words."

  The text format is not important (I tried .rtf and .txt) and InDesign is able to recognize both.

  I can not however, insert spaces or end of line in these long 'words', since we "words". The number of characters in each 'word' is important, and if I start to add extra spaces or end-of-line charecters he would change the "words".

  I have a lot of places in the text where I have these long 'words', and I would avoid too much clicking and inserting to work around this problem.

  I am running InDesign CS3 on a Macintosh 10.5.8

  I would be grateful if someone has an idea how to work around these.

  My suspicion is that they are, in fact, nonbreaking hyphens, but I hope that the OP can enlighten us.

  I must say that some screenshots can be useful, too.

• What happened to search for and replace special characters

  I'm a recent update of FrameMaker 9 FrameMaker 11. I use several notations with nonbreaking hyphens and nonbreaking spaces. In version 9, I was able to use the hexadecimal codes in the Find/Replace dialog box and search and replace these ratings. Now in version 11, it does not find these characters. I end up getting more I want.

  For example: I want to find

  (E Vote, September 12, 2008)

  This text has a non-breaking hyphen and showing spaces are nonbreaking. When I entered the document these characters, I used the combination of keys "Esc hyphen:" for the hyphen and "Ctrl + space" for spaces.

  When I enter "(E\x15Vote\x10Sept.\x1012,\x102008)" and press the button Search, FrameMaker converts the text to "(E\+Vote\s#Sept.\s#12,\s#2008)" and refers to a "Not Found" statement. I get the error even if I copy the text and paste it into the Find/Replace dialog box. I tried with "Deal", "use wildcards" and whole-word checks both market. I can't find it.

  Honestly, I never noticed if verstion 9A made the conversion of \x15 to------+ and dialog of \x10 to \s#, in the search/replace because he always found what I was looking for.

  I hope someone can tell me how to solve this problem, because it is a feature I use all the time in FrameMaker. I use hyphens and nonbreaking spaces everywhere in my documents.

  I also reported this as a bug because that's what happens if feels like to me. I went out and updated my installation of FrameMaker, thinking that this may have been reported and already corrected.

  Go to Find/replace

  Select text and character Formats Clipboard from the drop-down

  Click on Search.

  I imported MS Word documents with index entries (Cyrillic and Latin alphabetet, quotes, etc.).

  Now I want to generate indexes and I have the alert:

  "The index could not be generated.

  One or more index entries contains invalid characters.

  Please remove all invalid characters in the index entries.

  Where can I find the full list of characters which Adobe defines as invalid?

  I thoroughly have the bug.

  In Polish typography should be used in compound words , pair of characters in: conditional dash and hyphen nonbreaking to resume link on the left edge of the column. (He is Polish and Slovak rulez).

  This pair worked very well in CS2.

  (From cs3 or cs4 I don't remember) is not important to this pair of characters, just language Polish or Slovak of choice. And these hyphens are duplicated on the left edge of a column on the fly.

  But the docx file import engine still has the bug. If someone put such pair for MS Word, docx file, InDesign cs 5.5 cannot import properely in the InDesign document.

  Reference topic should be Yat - Kha. In MS Word, there is [conditional and hyphen nonbreaking hyphen] Kha

  but inside the reference in idml topic file is something like this I sgned in bold:

  I don't know what? 001f HELP? and? 001E help?

  But I know now that there are invalid characters

• When I paste unformatted text, In Design made disappear

  Often, when I spent the unformatted text in a box that I already created, it causes the text to disappear.  Instead, it has a little red cross at the end indicating overset text.  But whatever happens, the text will never reappear. Help!

  This is an indication that the text is too wide for the framework for a reason any. Common causes are the application of the No Break in a big block of text (many new users confuse No Break disabling the break), long strings of text where the words are separated by spaces nonbreaking hyphenation is disabled, options Keep requiring all text to stay together in a setting that is too small to hold , or dashes, either at the framework level or paragraph level, which make the column too narrow to contain the text.

  You can open the story in Story Editor mode (Edit > change mode editor or Cmd/Ctrl + Y) so that you can see the text. The best way to understand the excesses of ot, the problem is then to select the first line of text - there will be a red line indicator in editor mode - and examine the possibilities of setting shaped.

• Why finder hide Documents and office files in the home directory of the user by activating iCloud drive? What about the behavior of Time Machine backup or third-party applications?

  I'm under MacOS Sierra. I am connected to my iCloud account. I activated the option Desktop and Documents, but I did NOT activate the option optimize Mac storage, because I wanted to make sure that all my files would be available locally, just in case, I would need to work without an internet connection.

  -J' noticed there now a menu iCloud in my sidebar in the Finder, with links to Documents and desktop.

  -J' also noticed that Documents is no longer presented in my favorites in my side bar of the Finder.

  -This last suggests that files saved in 'Documents' are not saved more on my HD... but only in iCloud, which isn't what I want.

  -Then, sailing in the Finder Macintosh HD/users / 'My account' /, I noticed that my Documents and desktop folders are more visible, as if these files are not saved in my home folder most. Which raises the question: where are My Documents and files on my HD, so they are still?

  -Using a shell session in the terminal and again navigate to/Users / 'My account' /, I noticed that my Documents and desktop folders are still there. Which suggest that records and records of office reside actually still in my home folder under users, but Finder actually hide it and present them as being stored in iCloud only disc. It's very confusing.

  This raises several questions:

  -In the first place, why Apple hide Documents and office files in the directory? Why not view these folders in iCloud and directory?

  -Whence the iCloud folder or drive, reside actually on my hard drive?

  -What time Machine. Is it still back up my document files and folders?

  -What games third-party app mirroring backup of My Documents files and folders? They still work properly? (I use Livedrive backup and Sugarsync for files mirrored across several macs).

  -How can I understand that Apple is doing with my folders and files? Some users might be happy with the iCloud drive concept, without worrying about how it works, but I don't take chances, and I want to keep a good understanding about the functioning of my system.

  Could someone explain what is exactly happening?

  With office and selected Documents, access to these files are now in the iCloud Drive, not in your home folder.

  My guess would be that they do not appear in your file because it would be confusing for many people to make them in two places.

  If you want in the Favorites, open iCloud Drive and drag them in the sidebar here.

  All about iCloud drive has been saved on your Mac. With the exception of the office and the Documents, they are in ~/Library/Mobile Documents. However, if you choose optimized storage, older documents are removed from your Mac. I don't know what is "old".

  ~/Documents and ~/desktop have new metadata indicating probably Finder does not display them in a Finder window, only in iCloud drive. They are not hidden in one of the normal methods of unix.

  I have not tested Time Machine or any other backup program. The folder still exist in your directory home, and they still have all the files, I don't think that changes anything.

  I contact a crisis for support lines. My spouse has realized this by looking at the numbers on our call records. How do I remove or hide this line number of crises, so I can always get support? I know phone burner apps but they seem to be focused on the person, I CALL not to get my number. * 67 for that. This is my husband, that I care to see I called the number. Y at - it an app that would work, where I can pay without any suspicious records, so that I can call the lines without worrying about being discovered?

  You can use something like Skype to make outgoing calls. They will not appear on your Bill as they use data rather than on the cellular voice network. You will need to supply a Skype account, but it is quite cheap; as 2 ¢ a minute.

  You can also get and use a Google Voice number, but the call to Google Voice will appear on the invoice.
