  Are you sure that you open the correct catalog? Search the .lrcat files and if you find the good double click it.

  You have backup catalogs (do you not)? Open your most recent backup catalog and see what you have.

  I don't know about the first 12 items, but I don't see how that would be linked to lose your LR catalog.

  With your photos on an external drive and a new version of the items in another computer, I would be the easier and faster way of moving your PSE11 catalog on the external drive and the organizer of PSE13 allows to convert the PSE11 catalog.

  In more detail:

  -I guess that your catalog is in its default location on your old computer. PSE11, use the menu File\Manage catalogues and use the 'Move' option to move the current catalog in a new folder in your external drive. Do not move the root folder or in a subfolder in the master folder that contains your photos. For example, create a folder like "MyPSE11Cat" just under the folder root. Moving the catalog should not take long.

  -Next, open the Organizer in the new computer and use the same dialog file/manage catalogs. Click on the 'convert' button and navigate to the new location of the catalog PSE11. The conversion will create a new catalog in the format PSE13.
