  You can't turn it off, and if you could, you would lose all your messages eventually. You can have a file corruption, and I would advise to create a new identity.

  You may have a damaged identity especially if it's the default main identity. File | Identity | Add the new identity. Create a new one and try it. If all goes well, you can import your messages and address book from the old identity and delete it.

  Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE works fine and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you do not. When you delete or move messages, the space they used remains until you compact.

  With SP2, Automatic compaction in the background has been removed because of problems he has caused.   Do not archive mail in default OE folders. It will eventually become corrupt and you may lose mail. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them.   How did you compose the signature?  If you have used the word or some office products, its probably loaded with unnecessary code.  In Word save as html, but use the filtered HTML and which should reduce the size.
