How to back up a virtual machine

I run Windows XP Mode on a machine under VMware Player 3.1.4 virtial. The host OS is Windows 7 64 bit.

In order to safeguard the entire virtual machine, is it enough to make a backup copy of the directory in which it resides (c:\Virtual Machines\Windows XP Mode), or what is the best way?

See you soon

After you move the folder containing the files that constitute the target Virtual Machine just run (double-click on) the .vmx config file and load it in VMware Player.  You can then remove the other entry from the Favorites list.

I realize that it is a totally newb question, but I'll ask anyway.

I have suddenly inherited a VMWare installation a previous administrator and am now presented with a question.  The host VMWare runs on the free version of ESXi4.1.0 and is the only host running on this computer.  Don't currently save us the feedback, but I would like to.  I learned that I need to save at least the VMDK file for this in order to be able to restore it, but can't seem to find the procedure to copy it on the host to a place where I can have a copy.  Someone could shoot me a link or a piece of procedure?

If I remember correctly, so that you can export, you must turn off the virtual machine

  • How to locate a new virtual machine on a different hard disk

    VMware Fusion 3.1.1 (282344) Mac OS 10.6.4.

I have a few virtual machines on my boot drive and am running out of space. I want to create a new Win 7 vm on a drive different but can't seem to figure out how to tell VMware to put there. I know I could create in the normal location on my boot drive and move it, but I didn't Go on the boot drive for this.

How to create the new virtual machine on the new drive?

    Thx for advice,

    Ken

As you walk through the Wizard New VM and you arrive at Cap sheet, you have two choices...

One is to select the Customize settings button and the other is just click the Finish button.  Each choice made appear to save to: dialog box and you can pick any location you want.  Note that you may need to click the down arrow located right of save it under: text box to expand this worksheet to display all the options.  BTW, clicking on this button is the standard behavior of OS X and has nothing to do with the VMware Fusion in itself.

  • Best way to back up the virtual machine

What better way to back up a virtual machine with snapshots?

I have copied the VM directory to a backup folder, but then had problems to restore.  Just right?

Not sure if it was because of the way the backup that I did.

    Sorry my English!

It is recommended to create the snapshot with the VM or disable?

Snapshots can be created with the virtual machine or not. With the virtual machine running, it may take more time to create the snapshot, and you won't 'lose' disk space, due to the State of memory that will be instantaneous.

When possible, I recommend you take the snapshot with the virtual machine power off.

I try to take a snapshot of a lun (with a virtual machine in this regard) san and must turn off the virtual machine and disassemble the VMFS virtual machine so I can do that there is no I/O will the lun when I take the snapshot.

How can I (of) a virtual machine of the VMFS without making the other virtual machines running in the same cluster? I know that the VMFS is a system of shared files grouped campaigns, exclusive property of vmware. Does anyone know the command to use?

If anyone has any info on this subject, it would be great.

Welcome to the forums - it really depends on how your ESX host is the speed at which will answer the VM - if that's enough oversubsribed that it will take time.  An option you have is a reserve for the VM -.

I want to connect to this virtual machine from home. How to do this? What are the steps?

    Thank you.

    Hello

When you configure the virtual computing, r put his network card to use the host adapter.

In this way, the virtual machine will get the IP address of the router and will basically act as if the Chickadee is an independent computer in the network.

As long as the host computer and the virtual computer on and don't go to sleep, you can connect to each on its own through the network.

    or on the Internet.

  • How can I print my virtual machine XP installed on my computer Windows 7 host?

I can't print from my virtual XP machine which is installed on my Windows 7 host operating system.

The printer is correctly installed on my Windows 7 OS and I can print pages of test and documents through it.

But I can't get my printer to print anything from my XP virtual machine.

    What I've tried so far:

I tried to install my printer in my XP virtual machine as a local printer. The installation wizard installs the drivers of its own database. The icon for the printer appears in the Printers window. But the test page does not print, or it allows to print a simple text document.

I tried to install my printer in my XP virtual machine as a printer attached to another computer on my network. To counter this, I enabled files and printers sharing on my printer to Windows 7 host operating system and then shared to the network. Then I went back to my XP virtual machine to activate the printer installation wizard to install a printer on a network. The installation wizard will search the shared network printers, but do not find anything. I have the opportunity to enter things like the address of the network printer and so on. But I have no idea what to conclude from these boxes.

I did my best to make sure that the Windows 7 host operating system and the virtual XP machine are on the same network, which is a working group, not a homegroup. But I can have failed at that because I don't know much about networks.

    -------

The printer is a Brother HL-5050.

    Parallel cable.

    LPT1

This problem is not resolved. Anyone having this same problem with a parallel cable connected printer will continue to look for the solution.

BUT he is no longer a problem I have to deal with.

I discovered by accident that my printer has a USB port in the back. So, I went parallel to the USB cable. This allowed me to select and activate the printer in the virtual mode menu bar Windows XP special on the top edge, by clicking on the "USB" button there. Allowing the printer in XP virtual mode turns off also in the reception of Windows 7 OS. But then 'release' the printer of the XP virtual machine allows the printer under Windows 7 again. Not much for me.

  • How can I move the "Virtual Machines" folder to the My Documents folder?

VMwareFusion is to put the "Virtual Machines" folder in the Documents folder in the home folder (/users/ [username] / Documents), how can I move elsewhere (as/Library/Application Support)? The user Documents folder is not the right place for automated it system files, it is intended for personal documents.

I am running VMware Fusion on OS X Yosemite (and the virtual machine is Windows 7).

You can keep your virtual machines anywhere you want. Here are the steps to move:

1 exit VMware Fusion. You can stop first of all of your running virtual machines.

    2. drag your virtual computers folder or the individual VM "files" where you / them. Filenames usually end in ".vmwarevm". There is no need to call the new folder "Virtual Machines" - you can call it anything you like.

    3. Launch VMware Fusion. If the library of the Virtual Machine window is not open, open it (Windows menu-> Virtual Machine library).

    4. ensure that all of your icons for the virtual machine are light gray and say "file not found".

    5. right click on each virtual machine in turn, and select Remove. When you are done, leave the window of Machine virtual library empty open.

    6. in the Finder, drag the icons of file virtual machine in their new location and drop them in library of virtual machines VMware Fusion window. Drop them one by one in the original order, you got, or rearrange icons later.

    7. run your virtual machines as before.

When you create new virtual computers, navigate to the desired file before the Save.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you your folder of Machines ~/Documents/Virtual excluded from backups Time Machine, don't forget to change the exclusion to the new folder.

Time Machine backups are not reliable for virtual machines. You must have another strategy. (I shut the virtual machine down, compress the 'file', and then move the compressed file to a folder that is included in the Time Machine backups. This isn't the only strategy, but it works for me.)

  • How to build a new virtual machine based on cluster with powercli?

When you create a new virtual machine on cluster in the user interface, you cannot select the host, it is decided by the cluster.

Now, I want to create a new vm on cluster by powerCli. I have not found any parameter to specify the cluster.

Only the "$vmhost" to specify the host.

    Why are they so different?

Can someone help me understand it and how to create a new VM on cluster?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hello, bob1118-

While, as you said, it has non - Cluster parameter to the cmdlet New - VM, you _can_ effectively specify the cluster at new time of creation of VM via PowerCLI: you specify the list of resources within the desired cluster.  So a partial New - VM call would look like:

    New-VM -Name myNewVM0 -ResourcePool (Get-Cluster myDestinationCluster | Get-ResourcePool -Name "Resources") -Template ...

Who uses the resource pool default "Resources" that exists in a cluster.  And, you could fill in the rest of the parameters relevant to the new virtual machine of your desires.  How do I?

  • How can I register a virtual machine in the command line?

I want to automate the registration of virtual machines in my VMWare Fusion.

I have the vmx file. I can do this by using the command line?

If not, how can I do it automatically?

    Thanks in advance.

There are two main methods you can interact with the Virtual Machines outside user of VMware Fusion, the VIX API and vmrun interface and with the registration of these two commands are not supported with VMware Fusion (or VMware Workstation.* (* Non-exclussive VM)}.)  Recording controls are used primarily with vSphere.  VMware Server also supported recording orders.

BTW, from a Machine virtual Finder by double-clicking on the file of configuration of Machine virtual package or .vmx if it is already running and is not created through the interface user of VMware Fusion, for example created in VMware Workstation VM and copied on a Mac, created manually or via a script solution.  Although she will then have to be manually recorded.  Registered/not registered in this context the Virtual Machine appears in the library of virtual machines VMware Fusion.
