There are two ways to assign the drive letter:

1. graph mode, using computer management:

2. command-line mode, by using diskpart:

Most of the programs will allow you to do a custom Setup and change the location of the Program Files folder. Just be careful during installation. We'll always some files on the system (usually c :)) drive. For programs that are already installed in C: to D:, to add or remove programs, uninstall them and reinstall them. No you haven't, how it was labeled in the old pc is irrelevant, just install you it as slave on your PC drive, depends on the question of if you need to change the jumper on the drive. • How can I change the drive letter assigned to the partition of 'winretools' on a laptop Win 8?

I'm just going through the process to customize a new Inspiron 14z with Windows 8. The only thing that left me speechless are all provided partitions installed on drive, thanks to a combination of everything be different on Win8, Dell make their own way and GPT formatting.  Generally, I would like to know what the devil all these partitions are for, but it is fine if it will be a slow learning process.  More precisely and immediately, I need to change the drive letter assigned to the partition of 'WINRETOOLS '.  Currently it is D:, and the problem is that 10 years from now, I'm using as my data partition D: and a number of applications, configurations, settings, etc. assume that all my files are on D:.  For example, by having all my music on D:, I can sync iTunes library and preference between machines and all results files and playlists is from a machine to another.  Same thing for my photos.  Same for a bunch of utilities like FTP consoles, sync utilities...

In an earlier version of Windows, I would just go into management drives, right click on the partition in question, assign a different drive letter and work done.  On my machine, the WINRETOOL 2 GB partition shows not even as having a drive letter in disk management, despite the fact that it is D: in Win Explorer.  In addition, only the right click option is 'help '.  I took this option, and, despite its aspirations, it is not useful.

How can I change this drive letter to something else?  WINRETOOLS should even have a drive letter in Explorer (some messages that I've seen indicates that it must be hidden)?  If I change the drive letter, which will break its function, whatever it is?

    ....

My machine has a 500 GB of rotating disk that has all of the above partitions.  I shrunk the 80 GB C: partition, to create a data partition.  I've not yet formatted the unallocated space I want to solve this WINRETOOLS thing first.  Finally, there is a 32 GB of SSD that I put in place as a cache of the Intel Smart Response, and it is no longer visible to the operating system.

At the command prompt, type the following and press "enter":

    mountvol D:\/d

    Close the command prompt.

Drive D: letter should now be available and not used.

Here's some info about Mountvol, it's very powerful to be safe to use it:

My window is installed on the C: drive, and the application is installed on the D: drive,

I just buy a new HARD drive and put it into drive E:, everything is copied from drive D: to E: drive and want to switch between the letter D: and E:.

I tried to put in DISKPART, but when I restart my XP, the drive letter remains the same,

If I change the drive letter directly in XP, it cannot be changed, because the applications are running.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Make sure any DVD/CD or USB keys are not connected or set F assignments or beyond (MY DVD is S & T).

Shut down the computer; power off. Disconnect the old drive (now D). Connect the new drive (now a copy of the old D). Power and boot to the desktop. Go into disk management and make sure the drive that contains Windows, the original C drive is always c. assign the new drive as D. Reboot the desktop. Check operation.

Shut down the computer; power off. Plug the old drive. Restart the desktop computer. Enter Disk Management and assign it to E.

    Restart, then check the operation.

Now Ive some factory settings if something happened, I can run my HARD drive restore. My question is how to change the Vista 64 operating system, so I can keep the recovery on my hard drive partition?  Mayby there is some kind of upgrade cd?

    Thank you

    Hello

32-bit to 64-bit is not an upgrade

It must be done with a clean installation using a full version ' / Ultimate 64 bit license

Contact the manufacturer of your computer for more information on getting 64-bit ultimate, which I doubt they will always

    and microsoft sells more vista

    they moved on windows 7

  • Limit of 2 TB on 2nd HARD drive, how to change without affecting the system reserved Partition?

I have 2 drives - 240GB SSD where Windows is installed and a HD in Toshiba 3 TB of data.

After installing Windows 7 for the SSD, it creates a system reserved 100 MB Toshiba hard disk partition. I now want to create a single data (d) on the Toshiba partition but disk management only limit myself to create a partition of 2 TB and a 746 GB partition. Past posts to dig suggests it's the MBR problem - then what can I do now to break this limit, without deleting or play with the 100MB system reserved partition?

    Hi YT :)

You're right, that this problem is caused by the fact that your hard drive is cut using the style of partition table MBR, which allows only to create partitions to a maximum of 2 TB size each. In order to 'break' this limit, you must convert your hard drive in a GPT partition table, which does not have this limit (well, the limit to 128 TB then there it doesn't matter much). You can convert your hard disk from MBR to GPT without loss of data. Follow the instructions in the tutorial below:

    http://www.thewindowsclub.com/convert-MBR-to-GPT-disk

Method 2 and 3 explain how to perform the conversion without loss of data, method 3 is the easiest.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Can I change the drive letter of the partition BDEDrive on a computer using the BitLocker encryption without causing problems?

The computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise and has a hard drive encrypted with BitLocker. Drive s. letter is assigned to the partition of BDEDrive I am currently installing an application on this PC which uses a drive mapping, and he refuses to use anything other than its default value (which is S). The best way I can resolve this would be to reallocate the BDEdrive a different drive letter re-use then S for the application mapping.

Change the drive letter BDEDrive will break anything, specifically with Bitlocker?

Given that BDEDRIVE is used for deployment, and you try to map the drive. I would recommend posting your query in the TechNet Forums.

  • How can I change the drive letter of the cd/DVD/BD in windows 8

The only thing that appears under device management is hard drives.  Optical drives do not arise as they did under XP or 7.

In Windows 8, the optical drives are listed in the Device Manager under CD/DVD-ROM drives.

In windows 8, the drive letter assignments are made in the disk management snap-in in.

    Access

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative tools

    Computer management

    Disk management

Highlight the device in the list, click the icon to the left of the list on the right left

In the context menu, select change drive letter and path.

    Follow the on-screen prompts.

If the devices are not listed, shut down the computer to the power off. Wait a minute. Restart and check again.
