They are all JPEG files that I wanted to learn the system with. Is it possible to get the changes I make to the pictures added in Lightroom to appear on the original images on the external hard drive or desktop, when I open them outside of lightroom? Or I have to export another copy of this image, and then have 2 of the same pictures in my folder? (an original and a treatment?)

  You must export. This is how LR is designed. All settings are non-destructive and stored in the database (catalog). adjustments are applied when you export a version for office or in a selected folder.

  Well, the first thing I'd do is listen to the file in waveform (double-click the file and it will take you there) and see if the file itself looks funny.  If it is clean in the waveform, and then make sure that you do not accidentally have some effects activated in the rack of effects for this track.
