  Try the steps below and see if you can run the program.

  (1) open the resolution of the problems of compatibility of programs by clicking the Start button, then Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooting, and then click Troubleshooting. Under programs, click on run programs for previous versions of Windows.

  If you are unable to install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the Troubleshoot utility, navigate to the program setup file, usually called Setup.exe, Install.exe, or something similar. • Whenever I'm trying to run a program another window pops up saying 'open with '.

  This problem occurs with all the programs that I try to open it and I often have to right-click and then click "start" to start the program. According to me, that it has something to do with file extensions (sorry if this isn't the technical term I'm not exactly savvy... but things like .exe etc. in computing). I know that I had a virus in the past which could cause this problem too.

  I'd appreciate any help on how to solve this problem, since it has become quite an annoyance.

  Go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/22/reset-and-fix-broken-windows-vista-file-ext-and-type-associations-include-exe-com-sys-zip-lnk-folder-drive/ and go to the EXE and LNK and click on each one in turn to restore file for these file types associations. That should take care of the problem.
