I need a storage policy

I would like to take advantage of this group of ideas.

-2 machines, single processor Quad Core Xeon 5430 - 2.66 GHz (Harpertown), SCSI RAID 1, 4 GB, 146 GB 10 000 rpm.

-VMware ESXi on both.

-Operating system is FreeBSD 7.1 64 on virtual machines.

-For all 5 computers virtual and load balancing for a manual failover.  For example assignments change IP in the Panel when there is a problem.  DNS round robin load balancing.

This is not a typical VMware environment.  My interest is not consolidate servers but rather portability, performance and failover reserve.  Balanced load site is a web server that serves the time between 12,000 and 45 000 unique visitors.  The disk controller is not a cheapie so it is quite it bit faster than a single SCSI on readings and has no visible punishment on writing, not that it matters because I am not related to records in the native environment.  In the native environment, I use most of the 4 GB of ram, that's why we are moving to 64-bit.  We are are proven, we can run this on a single dual AMD server, but it is typed too.  As we move this site anyway, I decided to use it as a test for ESXi.  If she can stand in virtue of the present, I have no need to worry about its use anywhere.  After all, server consolidation is to make a server even when busy, no?  This will make busy.

In addition to being open to criticism of the plan above, I don't think I have a good conservation strategy. I need your ideas on a strategy for the SCSI, store backups VM and VM and user data operating systems models.

Thanks for your comments!

Hello

One of the things I've heard in the in the webinar was NOT at volumes local VMFS of installation, not even for the swap.  I do not have available CF, but I do iSCSI and NAS.  I have a kvm, the box is on the list of compat, but I can't seem to install a USB stick to boot from, so I guess I'll need a little mirror to launch the ESXi so that I can connect to the virtual machines on the iSCSI.  Since we are talking about the software initiators, we talk about moving the SCSI, treatment of the HBA to the CPU, making it the largest RAM and CPU.  What you say about it?

Yes, this is exactly the case.

I read at: http://blogs.vmware.com/storage/2008/07/vmwares-proprie.html on the VMFS.

"Clustering - the device second and vital of VMFS is supported for sharing or grouping. VMFS is responsible for the coordination of several independent ESX safely servers, read and write in the same block device. «It's VMFS that manages the basis for safe transfer of the ownership of the data from one server to the other during the VI high level such as vmotion, DRS, storage vmotion, HA, etc.» * Comment to the Webinar: * "RDM is required for clustering when you twoVMs on two different ESXi servers."

The last statement is for Clusters of shared within the VM disk. Don't not to store the virtual machines. You cannot use local VMFS. Even though I always like to have one for reasons of redundancy. What happens if the storage matrix dies for some reason any? I have enough local disk to run virtual machines from there if necessary.

I would like to clearly understand the meaing of these statements.  For example we say in a situation of balance of load that you have several servers to access the same data VM on the same logical unit number?  If so, how that is arbitrage?  DBMS would certainly be a special case.

The VMFS is up-to-date, you will need to store your virtual machines on a Cluster to the current file system, which might be NFS, or VMFS on iSCSI.

What NFS/iSCSI servers you plan to use?

Best regards

  • Cannot delete the storage policy to vCloud Director 5.5

I'm trying to delete the storage policy to vCloud Director 5.5. I did in several vCloud Director organization VDC but stuck with one on the same instance of vCloud Director. I migrated all the VMs, the media and the VAPP model to another storage strategy. I checked in vCenter as there is no VMs who belong to this policy. Always in the vCloud Director, I see 30MB "asked" to this strategy of storage for this VDC.

Any ideas what I need to check? How can I find what always uses this storage strategy?

The problem has been resolved. Failed ISO image was only visilble in Administration and media & other only. After it has been removed, we were able to delete the storage policy.

  • Bad showing 'Not Applicable' storage policy

I recently inherited 3 groups of vSAN and I was checking the configuration. I noticed that all objects have the strategy reported as "not Applicable".

I know that this indicates that objects do not exist in a vSAN data store, but this is not the case here.

All the 3 cluster are in the same vCenter and have the same storage policy.

    Any ideas?

Suppliers of VASA work correctly? Try a new analysis of them. I think it's a symptom, you see if the VASA providers are not workign correctly.

  • Virtual machines deployed on VSAN without selected with THICK disk storage policy

    Hello

We had an admin build 50 VMs on our data VSAN store but did not choose the VSAN storage policy while he got the default which allows you to have the THICKNESS of the disks provisioned

I have chnaged any of the virtual machines to use the VSAN storage policy (which uses a thin) but the virtual machine is still using all the space

Is there a way to make virtual machines recover white space, now they have a VSAN storage strategy?

Yes - I have to agree with Duncan. I don't think that there is a way to return/reduce the size.

An idea is, if you have additional storage, Storage vMotion VM to NFS or VMFS, converting to thin and then back to VSANS with a policy that doesn't have a "thickness".

Try it with a VM - see if it works.

A bit of a drag, I know, but I can't think of any other casual way.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, beginning 2011, just upgraded to 8 Ram and have the storage capacity of 500 GB.  I need more storage for photos.  How much more can my grip of Mac, and it makes sense to add a computer that old?

I'm trying to decided if I should try to add more storage to my lap top existing, or buy a new one with more memory.  I am a Photogaphy and need a lot of storage.  I have a MacBook Pro, in early 2011, just upgraded to 8 GB of Ram so I could upgrade to OSX E Capitan and add new software. I have 500 GB storage now and need a lot more. Would love 2 TB or more.

What is the maximum I can add to my laptop? And does make sense to do?

On the largest practical size warehouse readers coming always internally are about 1, 000 GB.

To go more than you would have to decide if the portability was an important issue, because additional disks should probably be external. The Mac can support dozens of external hard drives. If you do not carry them, 'office' readers are faster and can be found in larger sizes. Their PIN 12-volt Motors require a lot more power that can be provided using Bus power, while they use their own power supplies.

  • Default MARVIN and Thin Provisioning storage policy

    Hello

When you use the default storage of MARVIN to vSAN on our new Evo strategy, it seems that all VMs are thick provisioned, not thin.

My question is, why has it chosen default thick provisioning provisioning method for the storage of MARVIN policy? My understanding of vSAN vanilla is that a provisioning is the default value. I plan to create a new storage for provisioning strategy, but first of all, I would like to understand if thick is preferred on the Evo and, if so, why?

    Thanks in advance.

It's quite strange - because by default in Evo must be a provisioning is not thick...

The Evo has to ship to the QEP with the same default values as VSAN. As the team of VSANS, we would recommend thin provisioning...

Can you confirm that the policy is set to thick. Maybe a screenshot of the policy upgrade...?

This could be a factory error, or maybe a change not verified by a rogue administrator?

Can I ask who is the partner of QEP. It may be useful if you send (using posts here) what is Device Evo... (you'll find this under 'health' in the user interface of Evo, next to the health of system - ID is probably something like MAR12345604...

    Kind regards

  • Needs of storage and database on the operations of vCenter 5.0.2

    Hello

After crossing the requirements to get the latest version of vCenter Operations Manager 5.0.2 I noticed that the system can be deployed on Windows and that it is has supported for MS SQL databases. This brings me several questions:

    1. is it a preferred means of deployment vCOPs, OS vs virtual appliance?

    2. If I decide to go for a Windows installation can I installed everything on a virtual computer, so I don't have to use two: Analytics and UI?

    3. pressed for MS SQL, but there is still a requirement for a FSDB, so an external database support brings just more storage needs?

    4. is the external database needed if you use the version of VAPP vCOPs?

Now on the sizing of the FSDB requirement for 1 million parameters is 1.5 to, what is the minimum of FSDB on an environment less size of 250 VMS?, the FSDB can span multiple vmdk files to facilitate commissioning of storage?

I appreaciate all the comments of these issues.

    Thank you

    Juan.

    Juan,

I highly recommend the vApp and not the version of Windows Installer.  First of all, the standalone install of vC Ops does not analyze the ability which is included in the paralytic.  Second, your environment (250 mV) is well served with the deployment of VAPP vC Ops in the small configuration (which supports up to 1500 virtual machines).

There is no reason for you to deploy the standalone version, will give you features and the UI designed specifically for vSphere.  You would give the value you paid for the Enterprise edition.

  • Hereditary ESXi Server - needs more storage. Where to start?

    I inherited a Dell PowerEdge R710, 2 x Intel Xeon 2.13GHz16 GB memory 2 x 1 TB SATA (7200 RPM) drives in RAID 1.

The server is full with existing images, so I ordered 4 x 1 TB drives that just arrived. The server will be 3 TB RAID1 after I installed new readers

    Now my question is:

How can I save existing server?

How to reconfigure with new storage?

How to migrate images again ESXi server.

    Thanks in advance, T

How can I save existing server?

If you do not already have a backup I place, it's time to think

How to reconfigure with new storage?

In your case, I just plug the new players and create 2 other sets RAID1 with 2 hard drives. You'd have to divide the size anyway because of the limit of records ~ 2 TB of ESX (i). Once you have created the new RAID1 sets, introduce them as 1 TB logical volumes to the OS (ESXi) and create VMFS data warehouses. That way you will end up with 3 stores of data on which you can place virtual machines, which IMO is a better approach than the construction of 1 large data store.

How to migrate images again ESXi server.

If you create additional data warehouses there no need for migration. If you want to distribute the existing VM.

  • Satellite P300D-h-13 - need Mass Storage Controller driver for Vista 64 bit

    Hello!
My cake for laptop with 32-bit Vista preinstalled. But since it has 4 GB of RAM and 64-bit pprocessor I bought Vista 64.
I installed and configured everything except Mass Storage Controller. I don't know if it's for the SATA controller or something else?

    Hello

I guess the mass storage controller is the same as Intel Matrix Storage Manager and it contains the SATA drivers.

You can find it on the Intel page!

Simply search on the Intel page and you should find the necessary driver!

    Good bye

  • vSAN 6.0 - Virtual by default on SAN storage policy does apply a VM show not

My VM on my datastore vSAN all show "not applicable".

The weird part is that caching SSDS still works. How will I know? Because my performance SQLIO tests indicate hundreds MB/s and my braces are only a single SAS6 Drives. No spindle drive a possible way to do this.

Now the default virtual SAN storage strategy shows also non-compliant, but I can't seem to find the cause.

    Where should I look?

    I'm confused... lol

Begin by restarting the profile flown by the demon of storage in vcenter.

When using the appliance, connect with ssh and run "/etc/init.d/vmware-sps restart".
