  • How can I find several duplicate files and remove the using Windows Explorer

Somehow I see several duplicate on my computer files.  I can tell when they arrived as all the duplicate files ' _10-Mar-15_1. ' " However, I don't know how they arrived.  I think that Google Drive was the culprit, but I can't be sure.

How we (me) use Windows Explorer to find all files with "_10-Mar-15_1." and delete them all?

    I am using Windows 7 64 bit

    Thank you!!!

Windows Explorer can do no such thing. To remove recursively a certain file is easy - see below. To identify duplicates and remove some of them is much more difficult, because:

    • Are two files duplicates because
      -They have the same name?
      -They are the same size?
-They have the same file date?
      -They have the same content?
      -Everything above?
    • When they are, which ones should be deleted?
      -The oldest?
      -The most recent?
      -The batch?

Here's how to remove a certain file to recursively. Assume that they are in the folder "C:\Users\BHunter\Documents".

    1. Click the start planet.
    2. Type cmd. exe and press ENTER.
    3. Enter the following command and press ENTER:
      dir/s/b/p 'C:\Users\BHunter\Documents\_10-Mar-15_1 '.
This will show you all the files whose name above.
    4. del /s /q "C:\Users\BHunter\Documents\_10-Mar-15_1."
This will permanently delete all files with the name above. You cannot restore them.

  • Local TV news sez DO NOT USE Windows Explorer for XP and Windows 7!

Information TV local sez not to use Windows Explorer in Windows XP and Windows 7. Microsoft will provide you with a "Toolbox" as a temporary solution. There is problem that a 'hacker' can support my computer through Microsoft Windows Explorer. Is a CLEAR and PRESENT an IMMEDIATE DANGER?  Can I uninstall Windows Explorer? What should I install to take the place of the Windows Explorer?  How can I find the 'Toolbox' of Microsoft?  I use Microsoft Update at least twice a week to keep abreast of updates. I have McAfee Security installed.  Thanks for your comments, Kenneth Markson - * address email is removed from the privacy *

Don't believe everything you read in the newspapers or see on TV.

Then, you must distinguish 'Windows Explorer' (file management tool) and "Internet Explorer" (web browser).  You cannot uninstall Windows Explorer.  It is an integral part of Windows.

You can't really delete Internet Explorer either, although in recent versions of Windows, you can remove a lot of it.

You probably think of this story of a discovery recently 'zero-day exploit' in Internet Explorer: http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2012/09/18/internet_explorer_zero_day_vulnerability_ie8_ie9_hack_means_you_should_switch_browsers_.html
You can read about so-called bypass Microsoft here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisory/2757760 but they are so heavy that they are virtually worthless for the average user.

If you are worried, I suggest the following:
    1. do not visit web sites that you don't know everything.
    2. make sure that your antivirus application is up-to-date.
    3. make sure that you have Microsoft Update set to automatically get updates (not just twice a week, although that normally, it's probably OK): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525
4 and probably first of all, rather than Finally, download and install another browser, like Firefox or Google Chrome.  If you use one of these browsers instead of Internet Explorer, there is no need to actually remove Internet Explorer (and you still need to use it to get Microsoft Updates).

    Get Firefox here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/
    Download Chrome here: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/
    Get opera here: http://my.opera.com/community/opera/get

  • I searched C:\Windows\System32\regedit32.exe using Windows Explorer and it not found

    Windows 7 SP1 32-bit on Dell Optiplex 745

    http://PC.NET/helpcenter/answers/access_and_edit_the_windows_registry

After reading the above Web page, I searched C:\Windows\System32\regedit32.exe

using Windows Explorer and could not find.   I have "show readers, the hidden files and folders" selected under view

in then Folder Options if she were here, he should appear.

Here is a picture of the analysis of clarification;    Can someone check to see if it is installed in their computer files?  Thanks, D.Shepherd

If you look in the correct folder, and use the correct file name, you would be able to find regedt32.exe:

There was formerly a difference between regedit.exe and regedt32.exe but since Windows XP, when you start regedt32.exe, it ends up running regedit.exe:

    https://support.Microsoft.com/en-us/KB/141377

So use either one you want, but whatever you choose, you're going to get regedit.exe.

Remember that there is no cancellation or exit without saving when you use the registry editor, so it is prudent to have a strategy that if you make a mistake and your system becomes unusable (not start) when you have done, you will have a way to cancel the changes.

You can use this popular tool costs to back up your registry:

    http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/ERUNT/

And you can do a Manual Restore Point before starting:

If you want to use the States for this button several times, I recommend to save the style or to create styles in the object Style Manager where you can also modify built-in three States: Normal, rollover and down.

I had installed the update of MS Windows Defender KB915597.  After doing a restore to the point of restoration, taken at the time of the update, I am now able to open Windows Explorer.

  • How to adjust the default column is displayed in the Windows Explorer screens

I would like to change the concrete by default of my columns when you use Windows Explorer screen. It bothers me that I can't find a way to change the columns that appear by default whenever I open a new window.

I want to display more or less than the default value. Everytime I open a window a new session with the Explorer, it displays update, Type, size and tags by default.
I know how to add or remove a column, but it is a pain when you have to do every time especially if I have more than 10 windows open at a time.
There is some great information available especially with the content of media like music, videos or photos. There are many categories to choose from which must be wound up manually like BitRate, author, size, Date acquired, update, etc...

Is it possible to change this so that by default, I can choose the columns to display by default. Do not have to adjust them each time I open a new window.

It is a 64-bit version of Vista Ulitimate, but if there is a response, I think it applies to all Vista OS...

    Hello Chuckbytes,

Thank you for posting.  I have a solution to your problem.  This fix is to modify the registry.  If you do not want to edit the registry, and then don't do these steps.  Also always do a backup of your registry before making any changes.
These steps are courtesy of Médard Ghazi of Tweakguides.
Please let me know if this helps you.

Change the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk

    Changing folder views

For example, you can set your directory \Users\[username]\Downloads to display in the Details view, but if you copy a picture, song or video in the directory, the next time that view you the content they can be display large icons mode. Even if go you back and change the view type, it can reset itself once more the next time you go a different file type in this directory.

    Solution

    Open the registry editor-
    Navigate to the following keys:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]

Right-click on the bags key in the left pane and select Remove, and then do the same for BagMRU. This will remove most of the existing customizations for things like window sizes, positions and views. While still in the same place in the registry editor, you must manually recreate one of these keys, with a new parameter. Right-click on the following key in the left pane:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]

Create a new key called bags to replace the one you just removed. Right-click on the bags, select new > key and the name of this new AllFolderskey. Right click on AllFolders, select new > key and name the new key Shell. The final result should look like this:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell]

Now left-click on the last key Shell and in the right pane click right-click in an empty area and select new > string value. Name this new string FolderType and once created, double-click on it and in the value data box, you can set the default view, that all files will be initially (unless otherwise stated) by entering one of the following values:

    NotSpecified
    Contacts
    Documents
    Music
    Photos

For example, if you enter Documents in the FolderType value data box (which I recommend), then all the files for which you do not manually set a default view to the standard Documents records display as you set it.

Now, in Windows Explorer, go to your \Users\[username]\ directory and for each of the folder main types down there (Documents, photos, music, videos), make sure that you set the view as you want, including things like choose the columns to show, and what each of them is, the size of any icons/thumbnails, how they are sorted, etc. When you make the changes for each folder click organize at the top of the Windows Explorer, select "Folder and Search Options", go to the display tab and click on the button "apply to folders. This will set this view to all folders of this type even, and this method also means that should you copy files to another type in a folder, it will not change this folder view settings - in the future that the settings should stay exactly as you let them.

Update: There is a step more that can help ensure that these parameters remain fixed. Navigate to the following key:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]

Left click on the Shell key and in the right pane, if you can see BagMRU Size then it is not necessary to take this step. If she's not there though, right click and select new > DWORD 32-bit value and name BagMRU Size. Now, set this value to 10000 in decimal mode (or 2710 in hexadecimal mode).
