iPhone 5 s + Apple Care

I have an iPhone 5 s, which is currently covered by Apple Care. I dropped the phone to the point where it is irreparable (catastrophic damage, came wide screen)

What are my options to get a replacement?

I was told to buy Apple care (extended warranty) I'd just when do have to pay the cost of replacement of a new unit (regardless of how the phone was broken). Is this true?

I set up an appointment for a "repair" at the Genius Bar, but I'm afraid that they will not be able to do something when I'm there and return to me without any options.
