Is there still a classic of gen 1 work?

And if so what version of iTunes are you using for update?

TT2

It works with the latest version of iTunes, as long as there is a FireWire port on the computer.  I have one who "works" but it does not scroll; the physical scroll wheel turns, but the action is not registered by the iPod.  So, I can't scroll to select what I want on the iPod screen.  (I think I have since a "donor" iPod spare parts to get it repaired, but I didn't get around him.)

However, it will normally connect to iTunes, the latest version (12.3.2.35), on my Mac mini with the latest OS X (10.11.3).  I tried it for the first time.  Previously, I plugged (for testing) on my old PowerPC Mac running an earlier version of iTunes, because my Intel Mac mini has only one FireWire 800 port, and I didn't want to not mess with the currently connected external drives (Garland), more there is the need to convert the FireWire 800 to 400.

But since you asked the question, and I was really curious, I unplugged my two external FireWire drives and connected the iPod directly to the FireWire port of the Mac mini with a cable that goes from 800 (9-pin) connector to 400 (6-pin) connector.  My iTunes Media folder is one of these FireWire drives (disconnected), so I opted for my account 'User of Test', which has a library of iTunes for the most 'clean' by using the default settings.

The iPod appears in iTunes.  I was able to do a restore on it.  During restoration, when iTunes tells me to leave the connected iPod as it restarts, the iPod has not restarted.  It comes to show the "OK to disconnect" screen  I think that it is "by design," because this is the same screen that appears when you unplug the iPod after a normal sync.  Current ITunes must just a message changed at this time to restore (for this old iPod and probably 2nd generation too).  I just unplugged then replugged the iPod restarts and the restoration process.  I was amused to see the screen is wth started your new iPod appear for the older iPods.

This iTunes library 'User of Test' is related to my music to iCloud library, without song files stored locally.  I downloaded about 70 songs and auto-fill to load them onto the iPod.  I unplugged the iPod, and I was able to play the songs.  Scrolling does not work, but by pressing Play/Pause starts to play songs in order.
