Lock a VMDK

Hello

I need to share a virtual machine with a customer to some fine POC, that virtual machine contains fully functional application. How can I limit client distribution or I can lock the VMDK so that it can be used where I want. If I can do. Protected by word VMDK?

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards

Kaashif

Hello

It is true, that you can do anythink because this server instead of the Client and the client with full access I mean they have physical access. If you did something, they can change easily. you do only with demand level if you want to make changes...

Thank you

  • Lock protect vmdk was lost by mistake

    Hi all

I have a server with processor amd fx 8350, 16 GB of ram and 1 TB hard drive. I installed esxi 5 edition eval on it and created 3 vms on it. Everything works fine, but all of a sudden I can't access vsphere client. When I see it, a pop up comes up saying lock protecting the vmdk disappeared and I have only the option to click ok. When I click ok, vm powers off the coast. After branching, it may start or may not start. Again, he gives weird errors if it does not start. Please have look at the error and suggest me how to get rid of him.

When I checked on internet about this vmware kb article says something about the storage. But I internal hard drive of 1 TB of storage.

    Hello

None of these options worked. So as a work around, I added an iscsi storage to my esxi and moved all the locking of files to this storage and deleted these files in this storage. Now, next time when I try to add the same storage again, esxi said, format and Add... so, my storage is formatted and these files have been deleted. I know it's a very long process, but I m left with the only option...

Also, I removed the sata cable and reinserted back. Therefore, I don't have this error. Everything is good so far...

  • Locked model VMDK

    Hello

I tried to clone a machine virtual model today, I've done several times before, but today it does not work (it says could not open the vmdk file). I converted to a virtual machine and tried to turn it on, and he came to say that it was locked.

Does anyone know how to cancel the lock?

    Thank you

    Iain

It is a problem that I've seen before. Sometimes, when you deploy a model virtual computer, the virtual machine gets well linked to models rather than its own virtual drive virtual drive. All apperas to turn right until you:

    (1) remove the deployed virtual computer and find your model drive was missing;

    (2) you are trying to deploy another model and find the virtual disk is locked somehow (as your question)

For example, if a template is locked, always look for any (recently expanded) VM that uses this disk instead of its own.

    Hello world!

We want to put all our production and testsystems on ESX servers. We also have a redundancy, so that if a server fails, it could host all systems for the time beeing.

We contacted Dell fo a nice solution and came it with 2 x 1950 and 1 MD3000. I know that we can not all HAL and vMotion with the MD3000, but for our purposes it would be bad enough if we could start these systems manually on the other server.

As far as I understand is that both servers share the same storage and are locking the vmdk when used, am I right?

I posted our HW we'll buy and I would be really grateful if someone could take a look and give their opinion on this system:

Well learn you something new every day.

You can share a logic unit number between two servers from an array of SAS switching, IE the MD3000 you look. Of course, you are limited to two servers.

You'd be surprised iSCSI how fast is. Just because it's ethernet does not mean that it is slow. At my last job, we had a NetApp FAS3020 with FC and SATA disks connected to eight cores double 32 GB ram ESX host ~ 160 running virtual machines, and they have recently bought four servers dual quad core more with 64 GB to support ~ 120VMs.

Certainly depends on what are your virtual machines, in your case, you can do much more disk IO and feel the need to drive faster, but a number of virtual machines in the environment above have been weather data processing and real-time flight.

That said, if you do want to grow then two ESX hosts, will spend SAS keep things simple. I'll have to see on one of these loans...

    Good luck.

  • Cannot open disk «...» Boot Camp partition.vmdk","could not lock file ".

I upgraded to VMWare 2.0.1 of the trial version, but now when I try to run it with my Boot Camp Partition, I get:

    "Could not open the disk" / Users/deep / / Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm/Boot Camp partition.vmdk Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0/Boot' or one of the snapshot files depends on. "."

I would not be surprised if something was corrupt, because I migrated the entire Mac to a Mac whose hard drive was not.  I know that the Boot Camp partition works because when I start from it, all right. My guess is that the virtual Boot Camp makes machine refers to the broken old Partion Boot Camp on my old Mac.  How do I start again?  Just nuke the directory "/ Users/deep/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines / Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0" set?

    Thoughts?

In short, you can crush the Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm in this directory.  It will be recreated the next time you run merge.

  • Too many files VMDK

    Hi all

I have a server with a strange problem that I need help with.  This is a security camera server that keeps locked up due to a hard drive problem.  We have a data reader assigned as drive F, and from time to time, it goes to a point that the server crashes.  When troubleshooting, I found that the drive F is not available.  The quick fix is for me to just delete this player and add another.  Problem now is that there is a flat file and 4 or trust of the delta files on a drive that is no longer there. I put the new disk in another data store. There is also a file VMDK has a curious name... camera - ctk.vmdk.  There is no hard drive with this name.   They are eliminated without any problem or is there a specific way to go about getting rid of them?

If the flat file and delta is no longer needed, you can certainly delete. However, if you are not 100% sure, it might be a good idea to move the files to a temporary/new directory to see if everything continues to work as expected and then - remove them at a later date. The -ctk.vmdk file is the file that is used for the modified block (CBT), follow-up. One of these files exist for each virtual disk where CBT is activated. You can remove this file if the associated virtual disk no longer exists.

  • How to get rid of a Zombie vmdk file

    Hi all

We have a VMDK file approximately 172 VM who is sitting on our SAN, consuming expensive storage, but that is not actually used by any VM.

Everything has idea how rid the Zombie vmdk file? Thanks in advance.

    Thank you

    vmk2014

If you want to be sure, just do as I told you on my previous post... move the zombie file to another folder before deleting (if the file is in use will be impossible to move the file, because the file is locked)... and you can just wait a few days after the zombie file and before you permanently delete.

  • Sharing a vmdk

    Hello

I'm relatively new to vmware, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction with regard to the sharing of a virtual disk between 2 Windows 2008R2 x servers. Apologies if information I give is not as clear and precise as it should be - I will definitely respond with more information if necessary.

We host the recording of calls on these Windows Server software and newspapers and data currently resident on the VMDK to servers. We would like to create a shared virtual disk that are available for read and write operations by two servers for resiliency purposes. Obviously, it would be simple to use a NAS, but power are looking for an alternative. The servers are on separate hosts in a cluster with shared SAN storage and we run vcenter and ESXi versions 5.5. It is also interesting to note that we do not use web client for configuration.

I came across different links describing the process for sharing of drives for write operations, but not both read and write.

I hope that this is possible and if someone could offer some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you and best regards,

    Matt

A single vmfs vmdk cannot be locked by two virtual machines powered at the same time. If you need to change your settings a little here. First remove the vmfs volume in which you created on LUN, make sure you don't have any other on this VMDK, storage vmotion for other data warehouses.

    1. Remove the vmdk u created (shared).
    2. Then delete the volume on the LUN device vmfs. Do not touch the part of zoning.
    3. Make sure that this shared logical unit number doesn't have a file system on it.
    4. Now, go to the first VM and add a hard drive. Here, use add disk as RDM option. Point to the shared LUN device you have to this effect.
    5. Now close the VM1 where you added the vmdk
    6. Repeat the procedure for VM2.
    7. Now turn off the VM2, am VM1 to market.
    8. Create the ntfs file system on the drive in the operating system.
    9. Now turn on VM2. Rescan the disc in the disc inside the OS Manager.

I would like to know if it works.

    Thank you

    Thor.

  • VM does not start-"could not lock file".

I would appreciate some advice on getting this problem - it seems that my computer was turned off suddenly during the night.  Attempts to start my VMware Workstation VM now lead "can't open the Flash xxxx.vmdk or one of the disks disk that it depends on.  Reason: cannot lock the file. »

FWIW, I do not use any snapshots.

Is there a workaround for the "impossible to lock the file?  Is it possible to get this virtual machine starts?

  • VMware ESXi 5.0 - "move to" data store a vmdk file has left at the original location

    Hi all

I had to free up space on a SAN data store.  For this I used the function "move to...". "browser data store in VsphereClient.

Did not notice directly but after I moved my E: drive vmdk file, he took no source data store.

How can I make sure that vmdk (the source data store) may be deleted without impact on the vm?

    1. If 'vmkfstools d' report without lock, so I guess I could assume it is safe? Is there another way to check?

2 vmkfstools seems not having the '-d' option in vSphere CLI? (East - this only accessible from ssh console on an ESXi? quid vCenter then?)

In the data store, the files were:

    -Vm\win2k8_data.vmdk [SAN03] (data disk D :)

-[SAN03] vm\win2k8_data - ctk.vmdk (-ctk looks that it has been created by Veeam)

    -[SAN03] vm\win2k8_transactlog.vmdk (E: transaction log 128 GB drive)

-[SAN03] vm\win2k8_transact - ctk.vmdk (-ctk always assuming that it was created by Veeam ~ 8 MB)

    Steps to follow:

-J' turned off the virtual machine using these car

    S ' installs 2 files on the E: drive

-Removed the vm disk (<-my mistake? maybe this step left a lock file? in power vm off?)

-Added the disk from the data store where I copied it

    Thanks for the help!

    behd

    Hi Behd,

The best way to check if the vmdk on the source is not being used would be to add this vmdk to an existing virtual computer and turn on... ? If not used or is locked by one that turns on with success.

If it has an instance running it wouldn't let you put under tension and raise an error of file locking. ?

  • Receive a "error open disc can not due to the failure to lock the file

I had a disc with a boot failure.  I thought I had my saved VM but I got only an earlier version.

I put the disk in a USB enclosure and my new system cannot read the disc.

I copied the VM, I need my new drive.

When I try to open it, I get the error:

Cannot open disk '... vmdk' or

one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

    Reason: Cannot lock the file.

I don't have the original system, so I can't try to open it on this system.

Is it possible that I can get this virtual machine to open?

    Thank you

At least closed tab closed virtual machine or VMware Workstation then delete all folders/files .lck to the target of the virtual machine and then try to run it again.

In addition, your storage space supports VAAI? VAAI allows the host ESXi offload certain tasks to the storage array. It also removes some of the locking process, since acceleration hardware and locking of ATS (the two things must be supported and made the storage array) can be discharged in your table.

A few strands is not Persian a bad thing, but do not place too many virtual machines on a data store, as this can lead to more excessive locking.

@Avinash: would be better to look at the disk device (u) in esxtop. Then activate the H field: RESVSTATS = reserve Stats. CON/s shows the SCSI conflicts, when a host tries to make the i/o to a LUN that is currently locked. RESV/s shows when something happens on the VMFS volumes use SCSI reservations. In the example of metadata updates.

  • Cannot open the disk could not be locked the file

Error when you try to share a drive between two virtual machines.  I have two web servers VM and a disk shared data, each web server has 20 GB for operating system disks, and they share a 500 GB drive for data.  I use clustered OCFS2 file system later.

See the 500 GB drive, but when we turn on the two VM the second throws the following error:

"An error was received from the ESX host turning on VM Myweb1.

Cannot open disk ' / vmfs/volumes/MyWeb1/MWeb1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

    Cannot lock the file.

I've read about this error before but can't find where and understand that it's either because I don't set them up right to start with, or that there is some extra config I can do in the s flat *.vmx file?

Here's what we did when creating virtual machines and a shared disk, is there something missing

Create 2 new virtual machines for Web servers with disks of 40GB of basis for the operating system and then add a new hard drive to one of the virtual machines in vSphere BUT must be correctly configured for sharing between multiple virtual machines.

For example, to change the settings > Add > hard drive > create a new virtual disk > choose size and choose 'Thick eager disposition to zero' > under 'Virtual Device Node' choose a "SCSI (1:0)" then finish.

Once the drive has been zero there would stay out in 'Change settings' > click new controller SCSI 1 and choose virtual disks 'Physical' can be shared between virtual machines on any server.

Change the settings of the 2nd virtual machine and choose Add hard drive, choose existing, navigate to which you have created the VM 1 drive, make sure you assign it the same SCSI (1:0).

Thanks a lot a lot a lot for any help in advance

Did you also step on 2 VM below

After the disc has been zero go back outside to 'Change settings' > click new controller SCSI 1 and choose virtual disks 'Physical' can be shared between virtual machines on any server.

  • ATS and previous lock

    Hi all

I know, VMware now supports the VMFS-5 file-level locking and VMFS-3 only supports vmdk locking level or level of data store? I'm not really sure why. Could someone confirm my understanding?

    Thank you very much!

vpsphere 4.1 actually leave vmware introduced ATS... It is every time a file is changed to VMFS. It locks the VMFS full metadata... This is true until vsphere4. With 4.1 now if the picture is able VAAI... Portions of the metadata of the file that is changed corrsponding crashes. but in 4.1 it is partial, and not entirely ATS.

now to vsphere5 but it's entirely ATS if the array is able VAAI... is that the table is not booking VAAI then SCSI will be used.

So the correct term to use is metadata locking the locking... filelevel... not level file locking is already here... only an ESX can take owneship of this VMDK... locking metadata and filelocking is different.
