Management vCPUs in vSphere

I would like to know the best way to determine what should be my ratio of virtual processors to logical cores.  What are your recommendations or experiences?  I don't want to end up with multiple virtual processors that can be programmed between my logical processors available on the physical server.  I don't want to have resources underutilized, not more.   I would like to get a few hard and fast numbers (4/1, etc.) and some input and discussion and background of questions to consider when planning for capacity in this area.  The CPU usage % and the memory usage are underutilzied in this case, but logical core ratio VCPU virtual machine approaches capacity.

Example - I 200 virtual computers on every host ESX (i), each containing the number of vCPUs adapted at the request of demand on them (I don't use more than 1 vCPU when the applications are written to use it and to show that they need).  Lets say that for all of these virtual machines, I have a total of 300 total vCPUs for the 200vms.  How many logical cores should be present on this host ESX (i) for the 300 vCPUs to be programmed without undue delay of loan?

Thanks for your comments

I have the same problem with the memory.  According to me, one thing to think is for treatment that is not always the average load either, but on the summits.  Although you are able to get 10 vCPUs per kernel based on a calculation of average, if these servers using these hammer vCPUs their vCPUs and you have more allocated, it might be some drag.  It's just something to think about, but as it was stated his subjective to your servers and their needs in resources.  One thing that I seem to collect virtualization is everyones numbers and Statistics vary, what happens, you just end up creating your own.  Not really useful, but no configuration is the same.  Hope some of this aid.

  • Operations Manager integration with vSphere Web Client

    Hello

One of the new features that I keep seeing credited for vCenter Operations Manager v5.6 is 'integration with vSphere Web Client'.

I went through the process of getting vCOps operational v5.6 (and everything works fine), but I don't see any integration with the Web Client.  Am I missing something obvious?  Where is the integration?  I have to do something to activate it?

    See you soon,.

  • Host management through a VSphere to another

    Hi all

I recently installed a second server for VSphere (5.0) to replace our old one (3.5).

It is best to migrate the virtual machines outside the host, remove it from the old server VCenter and then attach it to the new server?

Can I leave the virtual machines on the host and always move the new VCenter Server?

I plan to install ESXi 5 on the hosts, once I get them managed by VSphere 5.0.

    Your help is very appreciated.

I am going through the same pleasure!

First - make sure you have your license immediately square.  Not sure where you are coming, but I had to install FlexLM on my vCenter5 server and save the vi3 license files and make sure you vC5 saw and read them properly.

We're also changing the management network, so I created a 2nd console.

If the hosts are in a cluster, you must disable HA/DRS, evacuate the host in Maintenance Mode, pull the cluster host, get out of Maintenance Mode, you can push back the nonclustered host, repeat, until the cluster is empty.

Once all non-clustered hosts, you can remove the host of vCenter3 and add the host to vCenter 5, while the guests are still running.

Then reverse the steps to build your HA cluster in vCenter5.

Then you can alternate upgrade (new installation) hosts to vSphere 5.

    Enjoy the ride!  ;-)

  • On the DPM (Distributed Power Management) in VMware vSphere

    Dear Sir.

    As the description below URL.

    http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/drs_datasheet.PDF

Could you explain how DPM works on the server?

I want to say how does VMware ESX control the power consumption of the server?

    Kind regards

    Charles

    Charles,

DPM does not resemble the power consumption of an ESX Server, but it leans on the CPU load and memory. "VMware Distributed Power Management (DPM) continually optimizes energy consumption in the data center. When virtual machines in a DRS cluster need less resources, such that during the nights and weekends, DPM consolidated on fewer servers and the rest goes off to reduce energy consumption, the workloads. When VM resource needs increase (for example when users log in applications in the morning), DPM brings guests powered down online to ensure service levels are met. "For more information, see VMware vSphere VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) .

  • Anyone who has experienced problems with HOL-PRT-1308 - Dell EqualLogic - manage and protect vSphere

I tried this laboratory several times but it is always empty, there is no VMs on it while in the statement, it is said that there is a center of data, host and VMs already created. Whenever I go it is always not created data center. Also in the statement, it asks you to click Home and I guess to see an icon with the name "Dell Virtual Storage Manager" I don't have that one as well. The laboratory all function with this icon and if you don't have it you can't not do laboratory. I tried to average different places different network just prove who has nothing to do with my network firewall or GPO, not this speed because nor does the House or work. Any help if someone had the same problem.

    Hello

I apologize for the difficulties you experience in this laboratory. You are right that this behavior would not be bound to your location network, GPO, or latency because it is all contained in the lab environment.

I connected to the laboratory, launched the web client and logged on as CORP\Administrator. You connect by checking the "Use Windows session authentication" box on the login screen, or you manually type the credentials?

The manual says to use the box, that's how I connected. You want to make sure it says "[email protected]" in the upper right, once you have connected. Once connected, when I click on the home button, I see the following with the Dell Virtual Storage Managerscreen. It seems that you do not see this icon.

    Similarly, I don't see a crowded inventory:

It is possible that you had a bad lab deployment, but if you have seen this behavior several times, this probably isn't the problem. If you can try to use the checkbox to connect and possibly further clarification, I can try to troubleshoot further.

  • Operations Manager Foundation on vSphere Standard Cluster?

    Hello

my client purchased the acceleration Standard Kit. The period of testing and migration, we used the 60 day trial license and activated the Drs During that time, we installed the Foundation included in operations manager.

Now, I want license systems. Before that, I got disabling DRS and to do that I have to remove the VAPP Operations Manager.

I'll be able to add the VAPP later without DRS? If this is not the case, how am I supposed to run Operations Manager in an environment of 'Standard '?

    Thanks for your help.

    Christian

You can not not run vCenter Operation Manager in a cluster without DRS because it's a paralytic.  You're choices are active DRS cluster or run on a host not in the cluster, but can still be managed through vCenter.

You can find Update Manager 5.0 in vCenter Server 5.0 installation package. Update Manager 4.1 can't handle the newer hosts.

  • Integration of UCS with vSphere - invalid URI error

    Hello

I fight to integrate the Manager UCS with vSphere vCenter.

The extension of vCenter is exported from the UCSM without error, but when you try to install the plugin via vCenter plug-in Manager I get this error:

"Invalid URI: the URI is empty.

I found this on the web, but this brings me any more to solve the problem:

    http://terenceluk.blogspot.com/2010/11/error-message-when-clicking-on-download.html

    Any tips?

    Kind regards
    Radek

    Hi Radek,

So as long as the file is saved in the folder plugins in vCenter, and they appear in the list of plugins, then that's all you need to do. You don't need to click on the 'Download and install' button as this will not work, because you have met. This is because it is a document XML allows to activate and validate your vCenter server and communication between UCS/Nexus 1000v. There is no practical application which is executed and must be installed.

    Hope that helps to clarify

    Thank you

  • Need a bit of help on vSphere bypass network

    Hi all

I'm new, please bear with me if this question is stupid.

I want to know if there is a way to share "invited a network in a BONE connection" with all of the server VM.

I am running a vmware 5.5 hyper-visiere (type 1) on a laboratory server, which is equipped with a single Ethernet NIC card. And I have another D-LINK external wireless network card at hand which requires drivers (provided on a cd) windows must be installed to use the device.

I created an OS (win 7 pro 64-bit) guest in the environment and installed D-LINK drivers inside the guest operating system can use the NIC without external wire to the network, then I disconnected the Ethernet cable connected to the server.

Now the situation is I have more connection ├a use vSphere to manage the VM server, but I could still access the guest OS mstsc (remote desktop windows) since the guest OS is using the NETWORK card wireless attached on the server.

Yes, it will be a problem for me to keep the Ethernet cable to the server 24/7, so I hope to find a way to use the NETWORK card wireless (currently used in a guest operating system) to manage the connection vSphere and support I hope that all network traffic for the server and all its guest OS.

PS: I assume that the wireless NETWORK card will not work unless the windows driver is installed, and I think that the VMware hypervisor cannot start windows applications in? I also tried to add the NETWORK card wireless in vSphere as another device, but it did not work, I remember well.

I hope that I have described sufficiently explanatory problem, I am happy to provide more details on the system.

BTW, sorry for the bad English.

    Thanks in advance.

    Blut

    Hello

I'm afraid that it is not possible to do what you tried to.

As a solution to a lab environment, you can install Windows as your primary operating system on the system and install the vSphere Hypervisor inside a VMware Player or workstation as a Virtual Machine.

In this way, your ESXi-VM could use wireless LAN from the windows of the host.

This is called "nested virtualization" and is quite common in the lab environment at home where you have a large number of servers or server, which is not supported by VMware.

  • Can't see vsa on the client Manager vcenter web

    Hello

VSA, I installed on my system vcenter 5.5, but I do not see the Manager tab of vsa on any of my client screens web vcenter.

I tried to follow the instructions to enable it, but they do not match what I see:

on the 5.5 documentation page (ESXi and vCenter Server 5.5 Documentation > vSphere storage > vSphere Storage Appliance > troubleshooting a Cluster VSA) it says in step 2:

"From the homepage of the vSphere Web Client, click Administration and click management plug-ins under Solutions."

The only thing that appears on my admin page to the title of 'solutions' is:

    client plug-ins

    vCenter orchestrator plugin

    SSO admin interface plugin

    vchsplugininstaller

machine virtual vsphere update manager client web plugin

    journal browser

    vCenter Server Extensions

    Management vServices

    vSphere esx agent handler

There seems to be no way to turn it on.  Can someone help me?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hello

It turns out that it is "standard solutions" tab: the wizard to configure the thing.  Not in the docs so: support VMware reported it via youtube videos.

  • questions of vSphere Client Web - (noob)

Hello! I'm not sure if this question goes here or not, if not could someone move it to the right forum? Thank you

IM pretty new to VMWare, but have a number of hosts running ESXi 4 and 5.0, each is a separate host managed by the vSphere client. We recently received a new server and installed ESXi5.5 to findout we vSphere Web Client to manage the virtual machines. My question is can I use a web client of vSphere to monitor multiple physical hosts?

Our facility is 4 physical hosts all versions the ESXi running, all independent - nothing fancy. We also have a San with two physical hosts in a cluster off site in another data center (a different IP address connected via WAN). This host is configured with the Id like to, at least temporarily, where I want to manage the new vSphere web ESXi5.5 Server client. Is this possible? I get errors when adding it.

    Thank you!

You can manage everything from a single Web Client vSphere since all hosts are added to vCenter and hosts are compatible with your server vCenter... you must ensure all the required ports are open through your WAN link. To configure a new Web Client vSphere you still need a compatible version of vCenter.

  • VSA and VSADs not mounted Manager time-out

I have some problem in my VSA environment. The first problem is that I can't access the Manager of VSA vSphere client. When I click on the tab is present me with a message "loading" red the a 'loading takes longer than expected, if the cluster is on a network reconfiguration mode disconnect and reconnect' and then eventually times out saying "the VSA Cluster is unavailable connection timed out: connect.

This brings me to my second question, which is the VSADs (two-node cluster) upward as inactive (not mounted) in vCenter. I can't ping the IP mount. However, I can ping the vCenter and two VSA management IP, as well as the IP Address of cluster service. However the management of the cluster (172.16.32.20) and NFS IP are not available.

I lost power to my lab and things have not stopped correctly. Since I put under tension, it was unavailable. I've included the VSA Manager log.

It seems to me the IP SAS is not. However, I do not know why?

Any ideas would be great there are machines that I really want to revisit those NFS mounts.

    Hi Owen,.

From the description you posted, it seems that either your cluster in maintenance mode or that there is something wrong with the backend network prevents the adjoining VSA VMs between them.

You can check if the VSA VMS are in maintenance mode by using WSCli and getSvaServerInfo running. To do:

Open a console session (command prompt) on the server where the VSA Manager is installed.

Navigate to the directory that contains the file WSCLI.jar (C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\VSA Manager\tools\).

    Run: java-jar WSCLI.jar getSvaServerInfo

Check the two VMS VSA. If they are both in maintenance mode, you can get them to come out of maintenance mode by running:

    java-jar WSCLI.jar exitMaintenanceMode

Check the VMs got out of maintenance mode by running getSvaServerInfo again. With the two VM VSA out of maintenance mode, the address IP of Cluster should appear. Check if the cluster itself is in maintenance mode by running:

    java-jar WSCLI.jar getStorageCluster

If the cluster is in maintenance mode, you can either take the cluster out of maintenance mode by running:

    java-jar WSCLI.jar exitStorageClusterMaintenanceMode

Or, at this point, the VSA Manager must be able to connect to the Cluster and you can take the cluster out of maintenance via the user interface mode. Once this is done, your NFS shares must be online.

In case the system VMs VSA are not in maintenance mode, there is probably a problem preventing the VSA VMs to communicate. Indeed, even if the VSA VMS are in maintenance mode, if there is a network problem, you won't be able to remove them from the maintenance mode. So, if the steps above fail, first step should probably be to check networking (necessity of VMs to communicate on networks of front and background).

  • vSphere 4.1 installation on a desktop/laptop computer?

    Hello

In a lab environment, I want to install vsphere 4.1. Can help you with a particular model of laptop and desktop, I can install vsphere 4.1 on?

A laptop/desktop computer with i5 processor will work? Thank you...

You can operate with an i5 processor.  Take a look at vm - Help.com or ultimatewhitebox.com for some systems that others have used.

Once you install ESX (i) on the laptop or desktop, you will need an another Windows PC to run the management client (the vSphere client). ESX and ESXi have a limited management console, then you will not be able to create and install the guests without the client vSphere, running on another PC.
