Migration of a virtual machine with two RDM physical to a newly created VMFS Datastore 5.0

Dear all,

I'm redrawing the storage storing all the VM, I have a machine virtual with two physical RDM to 2 TB each, with only 800 consumed Go, the question is can I svMotion to the new 2.5 to data store? the virtual machine (40 GB VMDK, RDM TB 2 * 2)

Thank you.

Djak44

Hello

Is there a particular reason that you must keep the RDM devices? Personally, I would keep away using the RDM disks because they can cause massive headaches.

If you go with again in RDM as described already sure to go virtual in order to have the added capacity for RDM

The New-VM cmdlet takes a single value of the parameter - data store and all of the virtual disks will be located on this data store.

If I understand your request, you create a virtual machine with 2 virtual disks, each on a different data store.

You can use the cmdlet New - hard drive for it.

    $datastore1 = get-datastore | where-object {$_.Name -eq "lun1"}
    $datastore2 = get-datastore | where-object {$_.Name -eq "lun2"}

  • Problem of migration of a virtual machine with multiple vCPUs

When I try to migrate some of our virtual machines with vMotion, I get the following error.

«Impossible to migrate from host a to host b: virtual machine has 4 virtual CPUs, but the host only supports 1.» The number of virtual processors can be limited by the selected guest OS for the virtual machine or the granting of licenses for the host".

The two ESX Server are identical HP DL380 with two quad core Intel Xeon. They are both connected to the same server vCenter (2.5). They both use the same license server. And, the VM OS is set to Windows Server 2003 Enterprise (32-bit), which is responsible for 4 vCPUs (it does now after all).

I tried moved under voltage power VM off and got the same error, so I changed the vCPU to 1 and it migrated correctly. Then, I changed it to 4 vCPUs with no problems on the new host. Only problem is, I can't stop some of the virtual machines to migrate to the new host because of the availability requirements.

Have you tried to change the settings of your license and apply them, just in case where?  I had the weird services fails when there is a kind of latency hit the license of the ESX host server.

  • Migration of a virtual machine or a new physical box vCenter?

Recently, I renewed my license for ESX 3.x for vSphere license keys.  I am now looking to upgrade my hosts of ESX 3.5 u5 to vSphere.  The vCenter esx 3.5 database is hosted on a physical SQL 2000 Server.  I bought the license for MS SQL 2005, but I don't want to do a upgrade inplace on the area physical virtual Center for many reasons that are not part of this community.  So now that I'm at a crossroads, set up a new virtual machine on the esx 3.5 existing hosts for installing vCenter and SQL 2005 to restore the existing database of vc to?  Or should I look to buy a new physical server to dedicate to vCenter and the database to MS SQL 2005 to vCenter?

In my environment, I have 3 ESX host running on the blades with a total of 10 VM operation.  In the future, I'm looking to virtualize a couple of SQL boxes once I get running vSphere.  If you were me what would you do with vCenter?

like saying it will "eat your own dog food".

For us, we have 9 instances of vCenter and all run as a virtual machine, with the exception of 3. When that get-enviornment upgrade vSphere4, vCenter Server VM.

This facility is fully supported and works a lot.  In addition, you will receive HA/DRS.  I would say affecting your restart your VM vCenter high priority.

I built exactly the same environment without problems, the only key is to have the RDM LUN in the same RecoverPoint consistency group.  Pointer RDM files should also be on a LUN in the center of gravity even, if all goes well stocked with your virtual machine configuration files.  I can't really tell from your comment if you are in the same centre of gravity or not.  See you soon

    Hello

When I try to migrate a virtual computer to another data store (using storage vmotion - change datastore option on migration Assistant) I still see this warning on the migration wizard: this virtual machine must be powered off to perform this function.

I'm completely lost, because I check the requirements to make a storage vmotion:

    1. license compliance: OK, we are authorized this feature

2 source and destination storage of data available on the host: OK

    3. no snapshots: OK

So, I do not understand why this message...

What can I do? (of course I can't turn off the virtual machine).

    Thanks in advance.

  • One migrated from my virtual machine to another host VSphere and it does not start

I have a virtual machine that I've initially converted to Hyper-V to host VSphere. After I did it would start very well, but I got up two errors when starting.

"An IDE controller is found but the VM does not support the option" and

"A plate supporting the option not found."

When I looked at the hard drive in the settings it looks like it is not supported. Is it because I badly converted to Hyper-V to VSphere using VMWare Converter?

But now, I configure VCenter Server and tested a migration of these machines to another host and using the VSphere Client. It does not start now. I get an error message that says.

"Device 'drive hard 1' uses a controller that is not supported." This is a general limitation of the compatibility of the virtual machine with the selected host ESXi version. »

Remember that it is the same VSphere host it is running on initially. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

  • Cloning a virtual machine with 2 hard drives!

    Hi all!

I ran into a very annoying problem. I'm trying to Migrate/convert virtual machines to a host in the CR. Each virtual machine has 2 hard drives which are located on 2 different data stores. When I try to migrate or to clone virtual machines from the host on my Cluster I get an 'error of operation period.

After scratching my head for a while, I discovered why. The virtual machine have 2 hard drives on 2 different data stores. Both flat.vmdk files are called eponymous because they are on different data warehouses (TTDC001.vmdk). I created a VM test on the cluster with 2 hard drives and flat.vmdk flies are named TTDC001.vmdk and TTDC001_1.vmdk.

So my conclusion as to why I get "Opération Timeout Error" is that VC trying Migrate/Clone to the virtual machine but is mistake because his attempts to migrate/Clone 2 hard files with the same name!

Can someone give me some pointers as to how I can get around this? I am currently copy the file hard 2nd to my deskop from the data store and rename it then copy him on the new cluster data store to see if it works as you cannot rename the file hard in the data store. It just seems long way round to migrate virtual machines with 2 hard drives, and I don't even know if it works!

    Please help!  :|

    Andy Hughes

    Andy of the evening,

I do it well. Thank you for asking.

So if I'm reading correctly it seems that you are trying to clone a virtual machine from a stand-alone host to a host that is part of a VMware Cluster. When you do this you get a network midway through the copy error. Is this correct?

Can you confirm how fast is connected to the Service Console between the two servers? For this kind of work I would recommend making them run at 1000/full, assuming you're not already. Could you also post the entire message that you get when the clone fails.

    Kind regards

  • Virtual machines with VMFS and LUN VMFS-no?

Is it possible to attend the ESX3.5 VMFS and Non-VMFS LUNs virtual machines simultaneously?  We are totally an environment totally VMFS/Fiber Channel VI with Windows o/s.   Although we have all our virtual machines that reside on a VMFS LUNS storage has asked if it is possible to have Non-VMFS LUNS presentable at our VM and VMFS?

I think I remembered that Non-VMFS storage can be made available as storage but do not know if the two can be presented at the same time

It can be done with a RDM and no special software required.

This error message generally if the hard files have been copied hosted as VMware Workstation product, which uses a format of sparse file that is not supported on an ESXi host. Instead of the hard copy, you can use VMware Converter, or - if you prefer - you can convert the hard using vmware-vdiskmanager (before transfer) or vmkfstools (after downloading). I deal to use vmkfstools you will need to load the mutliextent module (see for example "Clone or migration operations involving virtual discs non-VMFS on ESXi fail with an error" vSphere 5.1 Release Notes)

  • URGENT! After installing 6 Fusion and creation of new virtual machine with Windows 7, I get a message "VMware Fusion cannot enter the unit". WHAT SHOULD DO?

After purchase, installation and activation Fusion 6 with the license key, I had a library of VMS showing 2 Boot Camp partitions. It's strange that I only have 1.
I tried to activate them but received a message that it is out of date in 2 cases. (see annex 1)

I started a new virtual machine with a Windows 7 installation disc directly on my HD. I have provided a way to do this and followed the instructions of Fusion to the screen.

Apparently, everything went well and after several restarts, the installation appears to be over (see annex 2) I tried to open and run the installed Windows 7. I had however a window with the following message:

    "Pending the unit.

"VMware Fusion cannot enter the unit. Please wait until the unit starts automatically, or interact with the virtual machine below. ' (see annex 3)

Here Windows 7 seems to start but after a while with the home screen and of the Øresund finishing this window closed and open a new window called library Virtual Machine on the left showing the partitions of Bootcamp and the Virtual Machine Windows 7 x 64 and in the middle gray a representation of what is supposed to be the Windows 7 desktop. (see Exhibit 4). When I opened the settings button a window with different setting options pops up. This mark means to me that Windows is installed but the final opening isn't the case

When you quit Vmware Fusion indeed Windows seems to be close (see part 5)

What is going on? What has gone wrong? What should I do? I don't know how to solve the problem.

I should f.i. remove the virtual machine from Windows 7 and is free automatically made partition on my HD as the reboot with the Windows installation disc? or y at - it another way to enter the UNIT?

    Help, please!

    Thanks in advance

Your virtual machine is running. It is in the unit - which each windows gets its own window of Mac - and you have no application Windows running, there is no visible windows. You can start a Windows application in the start of Fusion menu in the menu bar at the top right, or turn on the Windows task bar on the view menu and start applications from there. Or use the view menu to switch to the Single mode or full-screen, which puts all of your Windows desktop in a window separate from Mac.

You do not have two partitions to Boot Camp on your Mac, you have two virtual machines named "Boot Camp partition".

The message about it being unable to enter the unit arrives while the merger is pending for the tools begin to run, because the tool is necessary for the unit.

  • Plan for the creation of new virtual machine with 3 TB data drive

We have an old server, we need to virtualize, and one thing that we need is a lot more storage. We have approximately 3.25 TB of available for this machine (250 GB for the OS and 3 to for the data drives), but I'm going in circles trying to find the best approach for this server. It is not possible to separate the data between several players because of the way the files are indexed. I have created a virtual machine with 2 TB of disk space (for the readers of OS and data) and added 1.25 TB of disk space I want to add on the data reader, but it does not seem possible to add 1.25 TB without destroying the data on the first disk of 2 TB. What is the best approach? Create a single disc for my virtual machine that is 250 GB and then add in two separate disks of 1.5 TB for storage and combine them within Windows?

    Thanks for your suggestions.

    Hello

Unfortunately, the maximum size of virtual disk to a virtual computer is 2 TB - 512 bytes. In you case it should create two or three separate virtual disks and combine them (disks RAID 0 or concatenate). Another way (IMHO besser way) is to create several virtual drives and mount using NTFS mount points.

    An example:

C:\Data is a folder on one of the virtual disks. Create a second virtual disks and create the C:\Data\Data2 folder. Rather than assign a drive letter for the newly created disk, you can mount it in the Database2 folder. This gives you the ability to move the largest files on separate virtual drives without lose you the structure of folders.

    Kind regards

  • Start and stop Virtual Machines with the system

    Hello

In a server cluster @vcenter HA/DRS 5.1, I enabled start and stop virtual machines with the system option but after I checked two days later, he is off again somehow. What makes this option off? I had a power failure in the datacenter. vCenter server has not been upward. I started all of the ESXi servers manually then went all VMs account is declining. I want that they start automatically when server ESXi upward.

    Thanks in advance,

Thank you. This option is more valid than if the hosts are part of an HA Cluster license. I suspect that you configured through the traditional vSphere Client and that it is a bug with this client. If you try with the new vSphere Web Client, you will find a notice that it is disabled and there is no button "Edit".
