My old iMac update

Hey guys,.

So I'm looking to upgrade my iMac 2008 (ish) old, and I was looking for more information on the process. From now, the main issues of my inability to update the operating system (running 10.5.8) and slow the computer in general. I have a feeling that a hard drive again is in order, but when I checked the disk with disk utility, analysis has revealed that everything is OK...

I have attached my features below, any and all advice is appreciated.

Thank you

Troy

The only BONE that you can skip from Leopard is Snow Leopard. All OS updates require access App Store.

Snow leopard is also required for very popular etrecheck diagnostic tool.

Some general tips on the update of Leopard:

It should be noted that it is an extreme rarity for the updates to cause upsets to your system, as they've all been beta-tested, but they can reveal pre existing, especially those that you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of all seeds, make sure they are fixed before continuing.

So before do you anything else:

If you can, perform a full backup first to a hard drive external. Ideally, you should always have a clone bootable from your system that allows you to return to the State of the previous update.

Disable mode "Eve" of the display and the hard drive.

Disconnect all devices except the keyboard and mouse.

1 repair permissions (in disk utility)

    2. check the State of your hard drive using disk utility. If defects are reported, again from your installation disc (by holding down the C key), go to disk utility and repair your startup disk. Restart again to return to your boot disk.

At least now you can be reasonably certain that your system does not contain obvious defects that could lead to an update/upgrade fails.

    3. download the correct version of the COMBO update from Apple download site.

The Combo in Leopard 10.5.8 update can be found here:

    http://support.Apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update

If you prefer to download updates via software update from the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac is being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU automatically installs updates major (and even minor). The value software update to download the update without installing it immediately. There is always the possibility that the handset download and install (which can be a long process) may be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking on the keyboard, and a missed installation will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can sit at a time that suits you. In case you need a reinstall, you make a backup copy of the update on a CD.

Details of the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606

More information on the use of Software Updater here:

    http://support.Apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

The Combo update ensures that all system files that have been changed since originally 10.5.0 are included, and those who could rate or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The updated Delta, although a city more small download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, that is for example, 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software update will usually download the Delta update only. The best Combo update must be downloaded from the Apple download site.

    Now, follow these steps:

    4. close all the applications and turn off the power the screen saver and energy-saving.

    5. unplug all devices except the keyboard and mouse.

    6. install the update/upgrade. Under no circumstances interrupt this procedure. Don't do anything else on your computer while it is installed. Be patient.

    7. when it asks to restart the computer to complete the installation, click on restart. This can take longer that usual, there are probably thousands of files to be crushed and placed in the correct location. Doing nothing while this happens.

    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again and you should be good to go!

If your Mac seems a bit 'different' or slow, do a second reboot. It can't hurt and is sometimes effective. In fact, a second restart may be recommended.

    9. open some of your most used applications and verify that everything is OK. In this regard please remember that not all manufacturers of third-party applications and plugins, modules, etc., haxies will have had time to do rewrites for their software to be compatible with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their Web sites for updates.

NB. do not try to install two different updates at the same time that everyone can have requirements and different exercises. Follow the recommendations above for each update in turn.

Finally, from Apple's own article on the subject of the software update can also serve as reading:

    http://docs.info.Apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695

If you update Safari (or simply):

Input from third-party handlers can do as much harm as well. They use a vulnerability for the right hand in your application code and modify the code that the application starts.  If you have installed an update of the OS and Safari crashes, the very [i] first [/ i] thing to do is clear on your InputManagers folders (both in your own library and in the top-level / library), disconnect and reconnect, and try again.

So, disable all third-party modules before the update of Safari, because they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add a return to one. If something goes wrong, remove again and check on the Web site of the manufacturer of the software for the new of an update to match your version of Safari.

Most of the errors reported here after an update is due to an inherent flaw repaired or not detected in the system, or a third-party add-on.

Additional advice on the installation of the software here:

    http://docs.info.Apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692

Again, input Manager reach directly in an application and modify its code. This puts the behavior of the application concerned outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. Who doesn't want to not not saying that questions absolutely ensue as a result of the entry Manager, but, as a user, you decide. If a manager of specific entry or a set of it functionality is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.

Once again, the Council is to remove all the input managers the following directories:

    • / Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers

especially before the system updates (they can always be added one by one back later).

  • What version of Mac OS x that I can for my old iMac

I have an old iMac with OSX 10.5.8 on it (iMac, 5, 1).  I bought Toast 11 Titanium because I thought that I could use it to burn blu ray my home video HD discs, but on opening, I found I need to buy a HD/BD extra plug for it.  However, he told me the plug needs OSX 10.7, 10.9 and 10.10, 10.11. When I look at the software updates, it shows that El Capitan (which I believe is 10.11.5). I do not think that my old iMac will allow me to update this.  Is this the case? Can I get older versions of Mac OS x that would work? It is very annoying because my camcorder has a firewire cable that only fits into my old iMac.

10.7.5 lion is the version of katest that can operate your iMac. Until last week, Apple has always sold Lion for $20, but they have completely abandoned now. If you want you'll need to find it elsewhere. Honestly, it's probably put time upgraded to a newer iMac. The new iMacs have the crush that turns easily into Firewire adapter.

What should I do to beef-up my old IMac (short of buying a new one)?

  • Old iMac is unusably slow

OK, I know that my old iMac is done towards the end of his life and I use my 2nd Mac now, but this iMac (version 7.1, dating back to mid-2007) is now almost unusably slow, in the respect that it takes a few minutes running until I can move the cursor. The browser takes about 20 minutes to start up and just try to click on the buttons in dialogue to confirm actions causes the beachball to appear. He runs the last Mac OSX (El Capitan), all this so far. The memory is maxed out at 4 GB and it is around 80 GB of available disk space. He was one good horse to battle, using Photoshop and other. Now, he struggles to open TextEdit.

I ran utility disk to check problems (there is not) as well as caches, etc, to try to optimize the performance of compensation. I think the best solution now is to do a clean install. What would be the best way to do this? I have 10.6 disk (my mac still has an optical drive), I could do a clean install on, and then update again to 10.11, backup of data and my Time Machnine backup applications. Or I'd be best to just do a restore from Time Machine and does not return to 10.6?

    What is the best procedure?

  • Old iMac do not print to HP LaserJet

It is a recurring problem I met for years, with no resolution.

I run an office with several Macintosh computers. The oldest of these machines in an iMac G4 (2003 vintage) running Mac OS 10.4.11. This old machine sees light as a part-time file server.

All our office computers are Intel Macs running Mac OS 10.6.8 or newer.

The office is networked using Apple Airport (WiFi). The main base station is a cycle of Airport Extreme. There is also a printer HP LaserJet 4100N connected to an Airport Express via Ethernet Terminal.

A very annoying problem popped up a few years ago. I think the problem started when I installed an HP printer driver software while trying to update the old iMac. I'm unclear as to what caused the problem. The configuration of the iMac printer recognizes the HP. When I go to print something, the printer LaserJet Print Manager application starts to be rolled up to the top of the printer... seeing data on printers LaserJet 4100N starts to blink... and then it stops and does nothing... said enforcement on the iMac LaserJet Print Manager, mysteriously, 'the process 'hppostprocessing' stopped unexpectedly on signal 5', as the barber-pole progress indicator turns constantly , and nothing happens.

I tried using MacOS 10.4.11's Print Setup Utility re - harden completely-the iMac of printer drivers. When I get the iMac to re - acquire LaserJet printers, it does the same thing. No change.

Before it goes bad several years ago, the iMac printed to the ch in both Mac OS X 10.4.11 and mode 'classic' (MacOS 9.2) without a problem.

No other computers are a problem for the LaserJet printer printing.

The old iMac can still print to others, no HP printers (Epson, Dymo) without any problem.

I turned my attention to this point because one of our other computers just died and we are waiting for replacement. In the meantime, the old iMac is used and still cannot print on LaserJet printer.

Clues are what is happening and how to fix it?

Well, here are a few ideas.  Looks like the girl printing system is clogged.

Let's start with a reset of the print system:

-Go to System Preferences > Print & Fax
-Hold down the Option key while clicking the sign '+', and then select Reset Printing System.

WARNING - This will remove ALL your printers!

-Select the sign more to add a printer. Select the default tab on the top of the window. Search for the printer, select it, and then beside the dropdown 'Use', select the model of the printer (not AirPrint). Wait for the 'Add' button becomes available. Until it clicks.

  • Need VGA adapter for my old iMac G4/1.0 17 inches in 2003?

    Hello

Today my old iMac monitor stops working. I was in several stores to try to get a VDG adapter to connect a monitor separated instead. But it is impossible to find one for this older model. Any ideas anyone?

    The specifications are:

Apple iMac G4/1.0 specifications of 17 inches (flat screen)

    Identifiers: iMac 17 "1 GHz - M8935LL/A - PowerMac6, 1 - M6498 - 1956

    requires Apple VGA Display Adapter

    Thank you very much!

    Johan Vikingo

The "Mini VGA / VGA adapter" takes many forms. Do not forget

If you get through one in a page of online sales, the seller knows

the differences between the "MiniDisplayPort to VGA' and others.

The part you are looking for would probably be described as: Mini VGA / VGA.

While I have a stock of old like new, bought since a few years there

thrift store for $2. It works with my iBook 1.33GHz G4 12-inch

There is no part number visible on what I say. At the time, I have

also bought three others, same price, which were sealed in bags.

(These fellows had reference numbers;) I gave them, at the time.)

Beware also of MiniDVI-VGA adapters, because these can also or

is not appropriate in the similar-shaped video out port; DVI was not a

standard in the old PPC Macs, some PowerBook later + iMac G5

a establish better conditions later than the old PPC G4 iMac or iBook G3.

The same element that adapts iBook G4 mid-2005 or before should also

mount the USB2.0 iMac G4 15/17/20 inches. The adapter I have my

iMac G4 1.25 GHz 17-inch (USB2.0) port VGA Mini computer.

A glance through eBay shows a mixture of different parts and customers

show them that some sellers have sold more than one type via their

site; Some users could not use the one they bought, others might.

The Apple site does not seem to show any valid age

more information regarding these vintage/obsolete adapters.

In order to avoid some versions of Mini VGA MiniDisplayPort and MiniDVI

adapters; Some versions are at the correct time, but for PowerBook

G4 models and a few figures are different part numbers. The plug

may be formed to fit the plug, but it lacks the appropriate connectors.

Sorry to not be of a great help; I look to see if I could find an of the

old Mini VGA / VGA adapters, here; & only found a w/o part number.

A search shows almost everything except good vintage pieces.

The site welovemacs.com had a few elements but was not unclear on what made

specific models exactly; and their price seemed a bit steep. Another Mac

centered on the sites may be able to locate the vintage adapters. Can be used

available, then that can also be worn or unreliable.

    So . . . .

Is there another way to export and then import Firefox passwords?

    Thank you

    Thank you!

I've used both and they both work.

First of all, I transferred the files logins.json and key3db of my old Firefox my Firfox again on the new MacBook Pro. Alto! It worked!

Then I registered Firefox Sync. It will be the end of my problems to keep up-to-date on both computers.

BTW. I discovered that both computers running Firefox v37.0.2. Apparently the problem is with the password exporter. It cannot be installed on Firefox v37.0.2, but if it is installed before you upgrade to Firefox v37.0.2 that he continues to work.
