My Yahoo homepage hijacking

I searched all night, passing through the old posts, and I can't seem to find how to stop Yahoo as my default browser. I changed the settings in the subject: config, I hit the perf.js. I removed the other search engines from the pool of search engine in the browser's settings section. I am at a loss, and it's driving me crazy. I'm on version 40, on Windows 10.

Let's separate some different potential problems:

  • You want to change your default address bar search engine, search bar, built-in home bar bar page tab and click on search. This is defined in the Options:

"3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Options > search, top

Firefox will allow you to change this setting and it works when you're looking for?
  • You want to change your home page, the page that appears if you click the home button or start a new window using Ctrl + n. This is defined in the Options:

"3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Options > general

    Firefox ignores your choice here?
  • Another page loads at startup, other than your designated home page. This can be caused by a bad add-on or a hijacked desktop shortcut. (To check the shortcut, do a right click, then properties. On the shortcut tab, check the target, it should have all the addresses at the end, just "C:\Program Files (x 86) \Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe")

To investigate a bad add-on, I suggest:

(1) open the Control Panel, uninstall a program. After the loading of the list, click on the column heading "installed on" to group infections, I mean additions by date. This can help the undisclosed items bundle smoker who snuck out with some software, you have agreed to install. Beware of everything that you don't recognize / remember, since malware often uses sounding names important or innocent to discourage you remove. Out as much garbage as possible here.

(2) open Firefox page modules using either:

  • CTRL + SHIFT + a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Add-ons
  • in the Windows "Run" dialog box, type or paste
    firefox.exe "about:addons"

In the left column, click on Plugins. Set essential and unrecognized plugins 'never enable '.

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, in case of doubt, disable (or delete, if possible) not recognized and unwanted extensions. Do not forget that all extensions are optional, none come with Firefox, and you can learn more about them by checking their reviews on the site of the Add - ons.

Often, a link will appear above at least an extension disabled to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links in the last step.

Any improvement?

(3) you can search the rest of problems with scanning/cleaning tools listed in our technical support article: Troubleshooting Firefox problems caused by malware. These scanners on request are free and take a long time to run. If they end quickly, especially if they require the payment you have a serious infection. I suggest the specialty forums listed in the article in this case.

Success?

(4), check your connection here:

"3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Options > advanced

Click the mini network, then on the button "settings". The default value of 'Use system proxy settings' should piggyback on your LAN-Windows/IE setting, or 'No proxy', you can try to see if that helps.

  • Yahoo homepage is loading is more correctly

Since the update of Firefox, the yahoo homepage will load is more correctly. It became a single column of icons, with some curiously to the format/overlap of the interleaved text. Only occurs with Firefox and only occurs on the yahoo homepage. all subpages (groups, e-mail, etc.) work fine.

    Hello

Please try Ctrl + F5 refresh of the page. This allows to bring the content of the page again. If the problem persists please check if this happens in a new profile. If it's good, you can later copy the necessary personal data of the old profile. Firefox stores your personal data and settings to another separate location of the files/folder. A new profile would default Firefox settings (Tools (Alt + T) > Options, and topic: config ) and usually also would be vacuum of Extensions and themes (appearance) in tools > Add-ons) and their parameters. In addition, a new profile would have no previous website stored data/settings etc, (Tools > clear recent history).

  • Homepage hijacked by google

My home page has been hijacked by google. I can put what I want, but when I close and reopen the browser, it is brought back to google. How can I fix?

    Hi jpitkin,

You should take a look at the Knowledge Base How to set the home pagearticle. Your home page might have been changed by a particular site. Sites like MSN, Yahoo, etc. have been ask to become your homepage.

There are the steps in this article to reset your preferences on the default home page. I would try everything first to clear all strangeness. If it works, you can try to set your homepage again to your personal preferences.

If this does not work, you should look the article How to fix preferences that will not save.

    Hope this helps!

  • Why Firefox keep changing my perefence for Google as an eingine search for tabs and the Yahoo homepage?

I am a user of Firefox 40.0.03. I put Google as a homepage of my start page and tabs. Lately, Firefox has started taking the freedom to change my preferences from Google to Yahoo preferences. In the last two days, I changed the setting from Yahoo to Google at least 10 times. But whenever I have shut down my system, Yahoo goes Google. I checked my system for any mischievous adware and Add-ons, but there are not.
I don't want to use Yahoo. Is it a policy of Firefox to push Yahoo down our throats?

Change the home page when you check only in "Options > general > Startup" or is it a problem with the page that opens when you launch Firefox?
For the latter, you can check the field target in the Firefox desktop shortcut.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/tools > Modules > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is the cause of the problem.

    • Put yourself in the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/tools > Modules > appearance
    • Do NOT click on the reset button on the startup window Mode safe

If you do not keep the changes after a reboot or have problems with preferences, see:

Alternatively, you can write a check for an infection rootkit TDSSKiller.

  • New Yahoo homepage is horrible!

Having an email account with them for years, I plan to remove althgether. Today, I noticed that yahoo has changed its homepage, leaving too much is the user to redesign with too much of their own personal information. In some places, the words on the page overlap between them. It's too much trouble to search through their groups to find one to post a question. Since I use Firefox to access Yahoo, I thought that the moderators or users would know a solution if there is one since I'm inclined to quit using Yahoo, if it cannot provide a presentable home page, which was my default in Firefox.
