  remove the old version is not necessary the cs6 work properly.  you have another problem.

  But if you want to remove cs5.5 for use elsewhere or for other reasons, open one of the programs cs5.5 and click Help > deactivate.

  then uninstall it by using uninstall adobe.

  You will need the serial number that you have when you bought it to activate the software.

  You can install and activate the perpetual software (purchased) two computers of the same type (mac or pc), as long as you use it on one at a time. (product of lightroom multi platform is the exception because it can be installed on the pc and mac platforms)

  It is advisable to disable the software on a computer on which it will be is most used, especially before giving away or selling the computer or reformat the hard disk. Please see this link: How to disable the software.  This frees an activation if you have the option to install the software on another computer at any time.

  You simply enter the serial number of your trial version: help--> Activate. If that does not work, reinstall simply by using the DVD of your package.
