No Audio - Inspiron 6400

Hello

I'm running an Inspiron 6400 (old, but * mainly * still works) and recently (for a few weeks) the sound has stopped working completely. I can't do audio speakers or headphones.

Using audio players, if I try to read a file, the program will become numb and I have to leave. If I try to play a video, that is to say: on Youtube, the video will play without audio or won't play at all.

Another thing to note: I dual boot Windows 7 and Linux. At the time where the sound has stopped working in Windows, I found it was also broken on Linux too, which initially led me to believe that it was a hardware problem, but after reinstallation of the operating system Linux sound on there started to work again. My only other thought is that the problem might be a level to the top of the BONE, but I don't want to take the risk of bricking my laptop computer with a BIOS flash at this point.

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

but after the reinstallation of the operating system Linux sound there started to work again.

Hello. Sorry for the delay in responding.

If it doesn't work under Linux then it is not a hardware failure. You can try to install a driver audio Sigmatel (Vista version).

Download the driver and extract the files (unzip or decompress and take note of the name of the folder created) but cancel the installation process. Go to the folder on the hard disk to which you have unpacked the driver files
c:\Dell\Drivers\Rxxxxxx

Find the setup.exe file and right-click on it. Select Properties. Find the Compatibility tab and select Vista.

Note that there are some audio software Creative Labs available on Inspiron 6400 support page. If you never tried and cannot install this software before you install a driver Sigmatel audio no longer works in Windows because of the failure of a service. There is a fix available if that is the case.

I don't want to take the risk of bricking my laptop with a flash of the BIOS at this stage.

I don't blame you, and also if the audio allows you to work with your version of BIOS it should still work unless you have changed your cpu. But if you wish, you can contact a Dell employee via hours and get him or tell him you upgrade the BIOS. If the Dell motherboard brick it will fix as long you have the evidence to be directed to Dell.

  • Very slow start and run for Dell Inspiron 6400 XP times

"I have a problem with an Inspiron 6400 brought to ' horribly slow start and run time.  XP Pro 32 bit SP3 patched up to date.  Cleaned up a lot of "undesirable", as the partially uninstalled programs, cleaned the files temporary etc. with CCleaner, cleaned and optimized the registry afer all the cleaning has been done, defragmented, tried to start without any of the boot files, disabled all unnecessary services and uninstalled virus checking software, (but ran several anti-virus controls) etc. - no help.   Safe Start Mode is faster, but... not at all normal - 1 1/2 minutes of screen to logon instead of close to 3 minutes.  A lot of memory (2 GB), which rises to 600 to 700 MB runnng all the stuff I've tried.  Hard drive is 1/3 used out of 120 GB with a 2 GB swap file.

One thing I'm still scratching my head over - beyond the horribly slow boot - is very slow access to files even though everything seems to work normally, but as molasses in January.  Looking at the performance of the Task Manager tab when I run a copy of a file (whether via a cmd window or with Windows Explorer), I see a near max processor would be and the other with a small business.  Even if the customer says he had been getting worse for some time, after checking and cleaning of all things 'normal', my next thought was perhaps a bad disk or disk controller driver, but chkdsk ran very well (although it took hours) even if I ' d I have already updated all drivers (and even the DVD firmware and BIOS) on the Dell web site.  Oh, and I ran Dell Diagnostics (from bootable CD) updates all with no errors found.  And access to the slow file even with symptoms had max-processor occur with a copy of the file on a USB key that seems to eliminiate the hard disk, the disk controller and the pilot.

The other interesting part of the display for a file copy task manager is that the processes tab simply shows System Idle 97 to 99%, with a percentage of casual for other processes as Explorer while I see 1 max out procesor on the performance tab.  That the same copy on your desktop shows 3-4% of the CPU usage and who is with active antivirus software.  I'm almost ready to fall toward a Windows reinstall, but would like to find the real reason behind this problem of puzzle...

It of almost as if he's using PIO instead of DMA disk access, but... don't know how/where to test this.

    Look at:
    and

Solved!   Thanks for the links, especially to each other.  An old but still a goodie!

For those who have enquring spirits (and anyone else who stumbles across this thread), the primary IDE controller has been set to PIO and locked it.  Who would have thought that Windows slowly reduced the transfer speed, whenever he saw 6 errors on an IDE device until it has been reduced to PIO and then he locked it?  But the procedures described in the link of winhlp.com showed how to solve the problem.

There are actually several problems that led to the final symptoms.  According to KB817472, the Atapi.sys has been improved in XP SP2 only degrade the speed of transfer on 6 consecutive errors instead of 6 cumulative errors.  And even though everything I have (Microsoft update) was seen and showed that this area was to SP3, I found that the driver for the controller layer IDE was the SP2 version.  Someone ran sfc previously perhaps?

Oh, and I know now that the Task Manager process tab does not time processor kernal, but the performance tab.  Good to know...

Thanks again to all who have responded.  Starting at the time of connection-question now is 40 seconds.   You'll love Untra DMA mode 5.   There is still a lingering question in my mind, since I've had the same symptoms of slow copy of a file on a flash drive.  Perhaps a link in some way to the way that Windows treats a flashdrive as a "drive"...

  • I have a DELL Inspiron 6400 running Windows Vista. The backlight turns off.

I have a DELL Inspiron 6400 running Windows Vista. The backlight turns off when the charger is plugged after about 10 to 15 minutes. If I shine a torch on the screen, I see about the display is always. If I select change user from the menu start or stop / restart the machine, the backlight turns on and will last for another 10 to 15 minutes. I tried in safe mode and the same thing happens. Can someone help me with this problem?

It could be the inverter Board or the backlight itself on the way to the outside. Whatever it is, it is definitely a hardware problem and it will take a good repairman to fix. You can contact Dell and see what they would charge to fix this, just to see if it would be more cost-effective to buy a new laptop or have it repaired. Because it is 5 years since it is manufacturing, you can be better to save your pennies for a new :-(

    Hi robertbrandt3,

    1. you are trying to do a full restore of the PC?

    2. What is the exact error message you get?

I'm trying to resurrect an old lego robot made in the name of a school.  The software runs only on a Windows 95 / 98 machine so I installed Windows 98 on an old laptop.  Everything is going well except that the video is limited to 16 colors.

    Any help much appreciated.

Make sure you install VMWare tools for Windows 98SE VM it will give you a proper display driver.

  • How can I save my win drive-dell inspiron 6400

I have an inspiron 6400 and want to to back up drive c: (win)

I install norton ghost 2003. but it shows this error: unalble to find free mbr slot in the dll of the virtual partition. This is usually because there is no slot free primary partition left on the startup disk.

How can I backup my drive with norton ghost 2003 or another program win.

This restore disk from dell with 3 GB of storage is for what.

    TNX.

    Hi Hamid390,

This problem occurs when the computer has exhausted all the four primary partitions in the table to partition of the boot drive. An extended partition takes a prime location, in order to have three primary partitions and an extended partition would also cause this problem.

Start the computer from a startup disk Ghost rather than a Ghost virtual Partition. You can use the Ghost boot Wizard to create a Standard Ghost Book disc for this purpose.

Repartition this disk. If you re-partition the drive, make sure that you create backups of your data before doing so.

For more information, you can also check for a link: http://bit.ly/Qvwpaw

I know if that restore drive are you referring?

Is - Dell Datasafe online? If so, Dell DataSafe Online to protect your music, photos and other important files by placing copies of backup to a secure storage site using your internet connection. For your security all data is encrypted and compressed before leaving your computer.

  • Inspiron 6400 and Wi - Fi

Hi, I have a laptop Inspiron 6400, which is able to connect to my router (Netgear CG814WG).  The network card on the laptop is an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG.  The signal strength is excellent but I'm unable to access the internet (IE cannot display the webpage).

This is a new router as I access the internet via a cable. Previously, I had a Linksys DSL-G604T router.  I had no problem with the laptop, connect to the internet.

For any help or suggestions most welcome.

  • Unable to connect to the network, Inspiron 6400, Win XP Pro

Hello. I have a laptop Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP Pro and cannot connect to the local network and thus to internet. The problem appeared after I took the laptop with me on a trip. I don't know if I hit it too or maybe changed a setting that I should not have. The only relevant thing I can remember is that I tried to connect to a wireless network, but totally failed. So now I'm back home and cannot connect to my network (not wireless), even if the icon on the computer says that it is connected to the network and works fine, then the function 'fix' there was no help. Other computers connected to the same router doesn't have the same problem. The laptop is not reachable from the other computer, and vice versa.

    Here is the ipconfig information:

    Windows IP configuration:
The host name...: (who cares, right)
    Suffix main DNS...:

    Physical address: 00-1D-09-BE-2A-B5

So, I would be really happy if someone could tell me what is the problem...
