In these cases, the product key will not be registered during the installation process.   From your description, I suspect that you have selected Open Documents as tabs in the Interface preferences section.

  Your first image doesn't go away, but is in tabs at the top of the images.

  If you prefer to see the images separately, uncheck the box of Documents open as tabs, as shown below
