Reduced block size but no big change on the disk storage

Hi all

This is my first post on this forum and I hope that I won't have any rule of Recommendation to report a question completely distinguish...

I need your advice on the disk storage of a BSO cube, here are the details:

Make tests on a cube of OSI, I reduced the size of the block of 76 032' to 11'232 bytes. Then, I was interested to check if the disk storage has been reduced... So, I took the same set of data and loaded into the old structure as well as in the new structure. For both structures, I have applied exactly the same calc script + has not changed any other settings (such as "cache" for example).

When I checked the results, I was really surprised because with the same set of data, it must 13go to the old structure and still 10 GB for the new even if the size of the block is really small... I've heard that "compression" could play a role here, but except for the compression, you have an idea of the reason why the disk storage is not smaller whith the new block size?

Thanks in advance for your different tips and best regards,
Laurent
P.S: the density is not very good because I tried to do tests on a smaller data set than the real...

^ ^ ^ You just stated that all of the data is not representative and is actually smaller than reality. So that means you load (approximately) the same set of data in large blocks and small blocks. Guess what happens when it is compressed...

To answer your question, the real test would be, for a number of limited but representative of blocks (good luck with that one), blocks of size reduced and complete tests. That will give you real world block size.

BTW, I'm guessing / hoping that you did all members of dense upper level dynamics. There is almost never (well, sometimes, but really very rarely) a reason to store the dense upper limbs at level. A large part of the time forms dense member of lower level can also be set to dynamic.

Kind regards

  • Changing the block size of 8 MB on local hard disk in esx 3.5 u4

    Hai

I want to adjust the size of the blocks of the local disk block size is 1 MB, I want it 8 MB so as to p2v a 600 GB machine in to the esx host has 800 GB hard drive. I know the following command

To change the size of the block of the vmfs file system, you must use vmkfstools to reformat the partition. The command is:

    vmkfstools - vmfs3 - blocksize 8 M vmhba0:0:0:5 createfs

but this command returns an error to handle attention I think that this command does that for logical unit number not local hard drive of the esx hosts tell me how to change the size of the block of your local hard disk in esx not lun

    VAMSi

Under ESX / Setup / storage, you need to remove the data with the wrong block size store (don't forget that you have a backup of your virtual machine).

So simple, you can choose to add a new data store (link on top-right), you will see free space (the old leaves) and you can choose the size of the block.

  • Font size Master page header changes on the slave with the exception of home pages when publishing?

I added a text box with large text as a header on my master page. Naturally, this header transfers to the pages of the slave and appears in grand in design mode and preview.

However, when I write the Typekit site, the police of the header appears correctly on the homepage, but becomes very low on the following pages. Yet once, it happens that once I have publish on Typekit, not in the preview of the site in Muse.

    Any help?

I found this In-Browser editing disabled in file-properties of the Site-Advanced fixed the problem. Header will now appear the same size on all pages.

If you want to install Windows 98 and you don't have it, you can buy a copy. You can only buy used copies these days, but if you can find one, it must be very cheap.

  • How to shrink thin comments on VMFS5? or change the block size?

Hi all, I'll try to find a way to reduce invited bloating thin-set in service in an environment VMFS5 all.

We went from 4.1 to 5.1 and then also vmotioned storage all our newly created vm VMFS5 volumes before you delete the old VMFS3 volumes.  During this operation, everyone has forgotten that one of our volumes has been intentionally assigned to a block size of differnet than all the others for the purpose of narrowing of the guests who had swelled upward for some reason any.  Now, we have no way to create something other than a volume of 1 MB block size which prevents us from doing the cleaning routine.  Is there an alternative way to shrink a guest who does not put offline?

For those who do not know the procedure that I describe, here's how it works:

You have a 100 GB comments that has only 10 GB of actual data in it, but because of something after bad temporary files, cleaning up old data, etc., that 100 GB had been used at a point of real files but is now only 10 GB in use. You want to recover which is now 90 concerts waste of space because your thin provisioned VMDK is sitting there at 100 GB in size.  With VMFS3, you could create a volume with a block size that was different from that of the volume on which the guest is currently living.   In our environment were all our 1 MB LUN but one that we kept to 2 MB just for that purpose.   When we were getting a little low on space and found guests such as the one in question, we would run a simple command to write zeros to the entire free space:

    Cat/dev/zero > bigfile; RM f bigfile

Then all you have to do is storage vMotion the guest at the volume of 2 MB and return to its normal domestic and suddenly the VMDK's 100 GB up to 10 GB, all with no impact on the guest.  Without support for the creation of a file system with a different block size in VMFS5, now I'm not aware of a way to reclaim this space in a way that does not require an interruption of the guest.

You can select the VMFS version when you create a new data store. With selected VMFS3, you will be able to specify the desired size of the block.

  • Change the block size of 1 MB (4 MB or 8 MB)

    Hi all

I'm in a delemia.  I have an ESXi installed 4.1 vSphere but I used the block of 1 MB by default when the size isstalling ESXi.  I have turned Virtual Machines for some time on this topic and may not all simply re - install the ESXi again.  I am currently in need greater than 256 GB drives in my virtual machines.

What I read for possible patches to change the 1 MB to 4 MB or 8 MB data store to support more than 256 GB drives is to add to the new temporary HDD on the server and create a new store of data on it with the block size of 4 or 8 MB and then migrate the virtual machines to the new larger block size datastore.  Then re - initialize the original 1 MB data store such as a 4 or 8 MB and migrate to the original data store.

    Two questions about this:

    (1) is my eventual detailed correction?  In other words, I add another, say, 8 MB block size datastore, although I have implemented the ESXi server as a 1 MB? Or will it just automatically initiaize the new temporary data store like 1 MB anything?

    (2) If this correction is possible, the passage of the VMS in a data store from 1 MB to 8 MB data store will have reprecussions?  In other words, move a Virtual Machine with the 1 MB block size to a data store with 8 MB is a problem with this virtual machine?

    Any suggestion would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

    -Dan

    Welcome to the community,

You can format each data store (which is just a partition with a type of VMFS partition) with a different block size and move the VM back if you wish. However, if your hardware supports ESXi 5.x, this can be an easier way to solve the dilemma, because after the upgrade to ESXi 5.x, you can also upgrade the VMFS3 data store to VMFS5 which supports the file (virtual disk) sizes of up to ~ 2 TB with a unified 1 MB block size.

  • data from the buffer before graph it and block size

I hope you can help me with this situation because I was collapsed in this situation for two days and I think I see the light in the short time and time is a scarce resource.

I want to use a NI DaqCard-HAVE-16XE-50 (20KS/sec accordig to the specifications). For data acquired by DasyLab, I use OPC DA system but when I try to get a graphic from the signal I get ugly results.

I guess the problem is that the PC is not powerful to generate a graph in real time, is if there is a block to save the data, then graph the data without using "write data" block to avoid to write data on the disk?

Another cause of the problem, it might be an incorrect value for adjusting the size of block, but in my piont of view with the 10 kHz and 4096 block size is more than necessary to acquire a signal of 26 [Hz] (showing the photo). If I reduce the size of the block to 1 signal showing in the graph is a constant in the first acquisition value. Why might this situation?

Thanks in advance for your answers,

You don't want to use OPC DA for a device installed with the material. OPC DA is designed for industrial devices low speed, not for cards installed 20 kHz!

Rerun setup of DASYLab and select the OR-DAQ driver, deselect the NOR-DAQmx driver.

You must use the analog input OR-DAQ module for talking directly to the camera. You will get the full speed of the device, and the buffering is managed properly.

I have this card somewhere in a box, and when I used it, it worked perfectly with the NOR-DAQ driver.

  • OS and Oracle block size block size

[Condition] If the size of the block of BONE [512 b - 64K] is greater than the size of block Oracle [2K - 16K]

Assume: BONES Block Size: 32K and Oracle block size: 8K

Quebec: One-to-many relationship will always be true? or block Oracle will use 8K to 32 K, and the rest will be unused? or it will return the error at the time of the creation of the data file?

This will challenge the relationship "one to many".

Leader: Oracle logical and physical storage diagram.svg - Wikimedia Commons

Refer to the basis of the diagram.

    " --------------------< "="" show's="" one="" to="" many="" relation.="" one="" x="" can="" contain="" many="">

    ">-------------------<" show's="" many="" to="" many"="" i.e="" many="" x="" can="" contain="" many="">

You don't seem to be read or understand what everyone says.

There is NO such "one to many" relationship. Like I said above

There is no 'validation of one to many '.

    1. the operating system uses a given block size

    2. you choose an Oracle block size

All these "one to many" is just the result of the choices you made in #2 above. There isn't any 'validation' that occur.

This likely diagram shows this relationship based on the recommendation of Oracle to select a block size that is a multiple of the block size of OS. If you do that this diagram will NOT reflect the case of NORMAL use.

You can't believe everything you see on the internet. Articles/diagrams and others are often from unknown or reliable sources.

    2.

    'Validation' is not any process.

I just wanted to write the Validation of the theory, the relationship.

Re-read what I just said again above.

There is NO validation. There is NO theory of validation.

All there is is the reality of the block size, you choose and the reality of the OS block size you use. Any relationship between these two values is just a reflection of these two values.

If you choose two different values, they have a completely different relationship to each other.

Oracle works with blocks of the Oracle. The operating system works with the BONE blocks. Oracle does not care really what size a block of BONE is in connection with an Oracle block.

  • storage on the block sizes and vmfs5 issue

We just bought a new table with a feature called FlashDisk SSD read caching.

the implementation of suppliers of this technology is the following: it basically puts cached applications frequently read blocks that are 16 KB or smaller in dedicated controller SSD, up to 1.6 TB per controller.

We worry about what we paid extra money for SSD read cache and I was wondering if it will ever come into play because VMFS5 file system uses the block size of 1 MB.

WE have Oracle DB currently set to use 8 k block size.  Now if VMFS collects the Oracle 8 KB please and puts them in blocks of 1 MB, then Im I right to believe that the read SSD cache pool will never be used?  y at - it a way to allow the Oracle 8 KB blocks to get to take advantage of the SSD cache using file vmfs5 reading system?  or is the necessary RDM here?

    Thank you!

Now if VMFS collects the Oracle 8 KB please and puts them in blocks of 1 MB, then Im I right to believe that the read SSD cache pool will never be used?

No, your assumption is incorrect. The size of the block VMFS is only for the sake of allocation/address of the files on the will. The size of the block VMFS has no influence IO issued by the virtual machines.

This means that a request for/o 8 k of a VM will arrive as an application of e/s of the same 8 KB on the backend storage.

The VMFS block size is completely independent and transparent to both, the back-end storage device and the behavior of the computers own IO virtual.
