Remote Update ESXI 4.1 to ESXi 5.5: no physical access

Hello

I did some research and I realize that the best way to upgrade the host small deployment ESXi 4.1 is the interactive CD mode. Unfortunately, the server is in another country. Is it possible to do it remotely? In addition, I have no way to move the host servers, to keep safe unless I have a template of the FVO. Is it enough for the host software upgrade process? It is of course a production machine.

If the downtime is an option, which of course is necessary, you can just pass the host without affecting the machines. The machines will be present on a data store, and they will not be on the disk that hosts Esxi OS (unless you have all of this on a single disc, which is very bad thing to do).

Its almost like a windows machine, when you re-install/update the OS changes/formatting occurs only on the operating system drive and you always keep the files on other players.

I have a test environment before going to Production Server two ESXi410 installed (1 ESXi and ESXi-2)
Option1: ESXi-1, I've got vCenter and Update Manager. According to the documentation, I tried to use update manager add-in for vcenter. That went well to update host ESXi-2 with ESXi410 - 201011001.zip.
No I haven't been in trouble for the installation of the update on the ESXi-1 which has the Update Manager. As I close the virtual machine and put the ESXi-1 in Maintenance mode.
Option2: allowing the Support of Local and Remote Tech support (SSH) technology. In this way, I copied the file to update ESXi-1 data source using PuTTY. But esxupdate command does not find the file in the path (/ vmfs/volumes/datastore1/filename.zip). Then I copied to/var/tmp/cache and use the command esxupdate - bundle = filename.zip update. It also worked well.
But the thing I've read in your documentation to use Install-VMHostPatch did not help me.
Option 3: of vSphere PowerCLI. > Install-VMHostPatch - VMHost /var/tmp/cache/ESXi410-201011001.zip IP - HostPath-server IP - confirm
gave me an error 5 No. OSError file or directory.
Yet once, I tried to change the path to the data store:
PowerCLI > Install-VMHostPatch - VMHost IP HostPath - /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ESXi410-201011001.zip
Please find attached the error in the image file.
I want to use the PowerCLI update of the host and the VM. VMware has no documentation on this.

Hello

Install-VMHostPatch will work for you only if you want to update the ESX host, it will not help for virtual machines. It is the snap another powershell called VUM PowerCLI that you can download from here http://vmware.com/go/powercliupdate. If you want to use that snap-in you should have installed VUM server.

Now on your current number. The answer that Luc wrote should work for you. In this example, there is a step that downloads patch files manually. The reason for this is the small size partitions on ESXi and usually there is no enough space to download large patch in the temporary folder of ESXi.

In fact, you can benefit from this approach - if all your ESXi boxes are connected to the shared storage, you can download the patches on this storage once and then upgrade one by one.

I installed an esxi on a USB 5.0. everything works, I have two testgasts. now, I wanted to test win8 but it's seems I have to update esxi before. But how to update the USB? I have not found any doku :-(

I'm not aware of a difference of correction/update ESXi on a USB device on a HARD drive. You can eiterh using a CD Update (for example, 1 day) or the vCLI as explained in the http://communities.vmware.com/people/vmroyale/blog/2011/09/15/updating-esxi-5--single-use-esxcli-how-to

Update esxi 3.5

I need to perform an update through the Update Manager Vcenter to one of my hosts running esxi 3.5 update 4, embedded version of dell. Once I click on sanitation, how long do you it will take to update? It will take several reestarts as well? I guess he's going to update all available for version 3.5, such as update 5, but it will not update esxi 4 will be?

Remote Update Manager does not all the apps?

Howdy all,
Using Win7x64. Administrative user. Currently the entire suite of CC2015 (all... installed Photoshop, Illustrator, first, etc.). When I invoke the Manager remote update from here:
"C:\Program Files (x 86) \Common.
It seems that it is working. Exists even with code 0. Log is below.
You will notice that the journal seems correct. And it updates some things very well. For example, it will update Dreamweaver and Adobe After Effects. Still... For some reason it is not Photoshop of detection or download Animate, among others.
What Miss me? Why isn't the remote update update all my Adobe apps?
We are a school with licensed site for about 500 machines. A solution that works is to run the uninstaller for CC2015, then install "2015.5 CC", but this seems useless while we have the Remote Updater application. Am I missing something simple? Thanks for your ideas,

Missing applications are binary complete and does not include through RUM.

If the Remote Update Manager Adobe is called when a user uses an application that needs an update, what happens? Break something?

As requested by the question. What is going on? I am looking for a way to control updates from adobe.

SCCM and remote Update Manager

I hope someone could point me in the right direction. I sent a package of AdobeCC to a few test using SCCM clients. I'm new to SCCM and I searched for how to call the Manager to update remotely for all of my clients using SCCM. I'm not using AUSST, I will go directly to Adobe. I found examples for Linux and Mac, but nothing for SCCM.
This guide said it's possible but I can't just to find a good example. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I opened a support request on this matter. Apparently, it is a known issue and is being developed. Their current solution was just to stop the process manually. Kind of a bad solution but little matter I just created a scheduled task to run once a week and then stop the process after 4 hours.

Recommended ways to update ESXi 5,5 to 6,0 U2

We have recently improved our vCenter to version 5.5 to 6.0 U2 U2.
We must now continue and improve all our ESXi hosts (also), and I have a question about this process:
Update Manager is recommended to upgrade the host? I'm asking this because, in my experience with OS updates (also Windows, etc.), it has always recommended to format and install a 'clean' operating system and does not perform an upgrade.
So, the upgrade to ESXi with Update Manager is equal to install a fresh ESXi?
If I spend with UNIFIED messaging, there are known issues and things that can go wrong in the future?
I already tried to put up-to-date with UM in our laboratory and a customer and everything seems to work perfectly, but I was always afraid that something could go wrong to happen in the future because it is not a new installation...

by using the VUM or any other option support (like esxcli) to do an upgrade on ESXi square is an option completely cared for and safe.

The way that ESXi is built it not to accumulate junk like other traditional operating systems. The code of the OS is in packages that are loaded into a virtual disk at boot time, and only data configuration (and newspapers if redirected) is persistent as soon as it recharges. It can even run without a State to boot via PXE and get configuration via vCenter host profiles (called "Autodeploy").

An upgrade will just update or replace the packages in the system while maintaining configuration data.

Unable to connect to update ESXi host to vCenter

So I have a client who does the following:
Added several hosts, vCenter, went to install the updates using the Update Manager. Host selected and selected re-mediation. Server through the remediation proposals and restarted. After server comes back online after the first reboot, it is impossible to connect to vCenter.
Updated version: 5.5U3b ESXi
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume that your customer has forgotten to update the vCenter server before it has updated the hosts.

You must have at least version 5.5 U3b on the vCenter to manage the hosts of these version.

Update ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 - should I use ISO custom?

We use the DELL and HP servers running vSphere.
When we are improving to 5.1 to 5.5 ESXi ESXi, can we download the ISO from VMware image and use the Update Manager to upgrade OR it is advisable to download the ISO image customized DELL and HP to upgrade?
ISO if custom is preferred, wonder if hardware vendors have different ISO for a different model of servers? (Some of our servers have been 5 years).

Well that depends on the used material (type/server model). If the host has a customized running version, I would use an ISO measure for the upgrade. Custom versions usually include CIM providers for health for example data. If some storage controllers are to use also which are not officially supported by VMWare, you must use the ISO custom to have included the pilot.

For HP servers, please refer to the VMWare HP recipe for compatibility checks on the server model.

DELL provides it has customized the ISOs on their support pages and if you look at the download page and check "Supported systems" you get a list of compatible with this version of VMWare server models, e.g. VMWare 5.5 Update 2 DELL: Details of the VMware ESXi 5.5 driver update 2 | Reference Dell U.S.

Update ESXi 5.5 to update02 - with the help of PuTTY cannot browse datastore?

I intend updating to 5.5_update02 this next Tuesday (10/14) and have the following steps that I will run via Putty however one thing bothers me. When I try to browse the "vmfs/volumes/datastore1' he said '-sh: cd: can't cd to datastore1. Don't know if it's ok or not. I figure if I'm going to request an update location, I should be able to navigate it's good? Maybe I need to be in maintenance mode?
The update path is "vmfs/volumes/datastore1/updates", but if I can't get into the data store how can I request an update this place?
