removeMenuItem does not?

Is there something special that needs to be done to remove a menu item once it has been added to the menu?

I create the menu item, then add in makeMenu, they appear very well and works, but at one point in my program I want to can remove the menu item.

I thought that
removeMenuItem (_holdMenuItem);
would work (where _holdMenuItem is the article that I added using menu.add () in makeMenu)

However, the menu item always appears in the menu.

Many people ask this question and I can never really understand the requirement (forgive me for being dense).

The menu is created by the makeMenu() method whenever you press the menu key. If there is something you do does not wish to place in the menu when the menu is created, simply refrain from adding it to the menu.

Example:
