  Press the 'globe' and select English.  It is the keyboard that determines the spell checker (not the language or region).

• Why the spell checking language setting does not match prefs.js?

  I only have one profile in ~/.mozilla/firefox (default profile), and in prefs.js contains

  user_pref ("spellchecker.dictionary", "en_US");

  (which is correct). Despite this, about: config tells me that the language is en_AU, and this is what is used by the spell checker. I can't change to en_US in the context menu in a text field and the sticks of change until I close FF, but the next time I start FF we return to Australia despite the adjustment in prefs.js. Before or after you change the synchronization setting makes no difference. Running in safe mode makes no difference.

  But the language you apply the default character style is applied automatically to all new text and you can speed up your workflow.

  I can't InDesign to use American English Dictionary for spell check on a single document (it works on other documents).

  I tried to select the English Dictionary in oh so many places (preferences, character, user...   Spell check language actually attributed to the text, so it looks that your text is marked as the Canadian French.

  Paragraph styles, as said Jean Marc, are the first place to look to be sure that the correct language is used, but you can also use find/replace to assign a new language.
