Safari / OSX needs to be updated

My mother has problems to access accounts online on Safari. Such as banking, insurance, etc. She made a mistake on various Web sites, that it seeks to access telling him that his version of safari is too old and sites prevent him from doing anything on the site. She has an older version, I agree, 6.2.8,, but it is because she has an old computer. I hesitate to update its OS (she currently 10.8.5) because the last time I upgraded my mac (a late 2009 mac pro desktop) to Yosemite 10.6.8 that he caused all sorts of problems with my system because it was too big a bone for my machine to manage despite the fact that I have exceeded the requirements of the system. I don't want my mother, which is the furthest thing from someone tech-savy, having to deal with issues that come to pass to a BONE that is too much for his machine to manage. I think that I have learned of the mistake I made with my camera.

My mother has a 13 "MacBook Pro mid-2012, 2.5 GHz Intel core i5 with 4 GB of Ram.

My questions are:

1: is completely related to your version of the OS now Safari? Can I ONLY go there if I update the OS? If so, why Apple made this cause it puts me really off

2: I'm going to go to Yosemite (probably not available yet more) or El Capitan, which have tons of bad reviews (that of myself, though on an older machine, but with more Ram and a faster processor)?

3: is this better if I just submit to Firefox?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, Safari is related to the OS X version (and has always been except for rare updates)

Bad reviews are meaningless,

You could attend an alternative if you choose, I'd say Opera on Firefox.
