SAN LUN must be disconnected to ESXi 4.1 U3 upgrade?

Salvation;

I was wondering if SAN LUN must be separated (registered) during the upgrade of U3 for an ESXi host.

I did the upgrade on a new host that is not yet in production, and has any HBA inside.

I just tried on a variety of prod in maintenance mode and it gets to a screen and it shows the LUNS sees it. (see the attached screenshot)

I know that the local drive is the target, but I want to just make sure that nothing happens on the remote SAN LUNS if I proceed.

Any info would be great, thanks.

If I am mistaken, interactively fix/upgrade using the CD is only supported with ESXi 5.0 and newer. In doing so, with the ESXi 4.1 CD, will wipe the installation disc! A method of support for ESXi 4.1 update is for example the vihostupdate command-line utility to apply the patches provided in http://www.vmware.com/patchmgr/download.portal.

First, look at the status of logic on the side of SAN unit number.

    The windows machine

    1. make sure that you can see WWPN in the HBA bios.

    2. starting at OS level check LUN status using above commands so Multipathing s/w is installed, Else look for hard drives in the Device Manager (it must be something lik DISK IBM)

  • MSCS with a RDM SAN LUN

I'm building a Microsoft Cluster with two VM on the physical host computers separate servers.  Based on what I have read so far using a RDM SAN LUN is supported when the cluster nodes are on separate host servers.  VMFS formatted SAN LUNS are not supported when the nodes are on separate host servers.

If I have I need of several shared volumes, the only commune RDM LUN can cause several volumes in windows or each shared volume is associated with a RDM LUN?

    ESXi 5.0

    Windows Server Standard 2008 R2 x 64-cluster nodes

    Welcome to the community,

usually, you would create a volume on a LUN (essentially identical with the physical installation of MSCS). Having multiple volumes on a single LUN would make not much sense anyway, because MSCS can not move LUN between nodes (i.e. only a single cluster node can be the owner/Defender).

  • SAN LUN mapping

    Hi all

Just a quick question, in are environment we use ESX 4.0 Update 2. We use a SAN that is connected through fibre channel. I want to know it's possible map SAN LUNS directly to a virtual machine?

You can do this with NPIV, where your virtual machines get there own virtual fiber HBA and WWN adapters and you then use your San to map LUNS to these WWN. Your esx host must be able to see the SAN for this to work and there are a few prerequisites more.

  • All protected LUNS must be identified separately within the Group of Protection of SRM. But this isn't the case!

    Hello

I installed the latest version of SRM in our environment. We have 2 IBM midsize v7000 storage on primary site and disaster. We use array based replication.

I have configured groups of consistency for all LUNs replicated through v7000 storage.  All LUNS are replicated successfully. I installed the last IBM midsize SRA on two SRM server. There is no problem...

    Everything is ok. But; When I try to create protection MIS group, I couldn't see LUN separately. If you look at the images below, you will understand what I mean;

I have four different coherent group on v7000.

    3.jpg

The SRA has been installed successfully.

    1.jpg

I see all the cohesive group of v7000 under the SRA through SRM.

    2.jpg

IT'S MY PROBLEM! All LUNS must be separately! But I see a group of data store! It must be like on the right side. I want to create different Protection Group all LUNS. But I couldn't choose lun separately.

    who knows what is wrong?

    4.jpg

    Thank you.

Check if any of your virtual machines have VMDK on all LUNS, because you'll be able to create a Protection Group separately for each single logic unit number if a virtual have virtual disks on more than one logical unit number.

  • How to add SAN LUN in ESX of CLI?

    Hello people,

I work for a team of engineers to implementation, where our tasks involve the construction of about 15 bunches per month.

As part of build tasks, we end up consuming more time add the SAN LUN in the ESX servers all running ESX 4.1 through the Victoria Cross.

I understand that the vmkfstools command could help us create a partition vmfs3 on the LUN, but when I do it asks me to set the partition to 0xfb and I believe that we should use the parted for that utility.

I can't define it with a single command. My goal is to put these commands in a script to speed up the work.

I'm also not sure if the LUN list that I see in the Terminal Server to ESX Server session is the same as what I see in the VCenter. How can I do?

Comparing the two screenshots, I see an additional LUN of the Terminal Server session

Would appreciate any help in this matter.

    Hello

Take a look on the link below

    http://www.virtu-al.NET/2009/08/28/PowerCLI-mass-provision-datastores/

And if you work in a team of engineers, I recommend to familiarize themselves with PowerCLI, tool very powerful

BTW, I remember if you would vmkfstool used for the creation of VMFS, data warehouses will be not aligned LUN pieces that could lead to a deterioration of storage I/O performance

I also have the CD VMware converter acronis.

How can I get it work? as I'm not able to migrate the attached SAN LUN due to space issues.

    Any help appreciated...

How can I get it work? as I'm not able to migrate the attached SAN LUN due to space issues.

You don't need to convert the SAN disks, ignore those.  NPIV can be used to attach these LUNS later once it is converted.

Use VM Converter, convert JUST the boot disk for the file server.

  • change the block size to SAN LUNS?

is it possible that I can change the size of the block on a SAN LUN (whether SATA, iSCSI or fiber) with the help of a vCenter?  If not, what is the way to do it?  Or, our administrator SAN should do?

It is easier in vcenter - once the vmfs data store has been deleted data from the data store vmfs to remove and re-create it with the correct size of the block.

  • SAN LUNS vs. VMFS Block Size block size

    Hi all

I searched a bit and you read some documents on VMFS block sizes and alignment. However, I'm still a little confused. I think I get the concept of aligning vmfs partitions and how the block size affects max vmdk/size of the file on a partition. When creating new virtual disks and LUNS on my SAN, however, I can choose the sizes of different block there, as well.

Choose size of block even when you create a SAN LUNS as VMFS partition that will reside on this subject? There is also 'the band height' and I wonder how it might affect things. The default value is 64 k, which I was using.

    Thank you very much

Take a look at: disk partition alignment

Block is not to same size, cause VMFS use big block (not available at the level of storage).

  • P2V with the guest who has devoted the fiber SAN LUN connection

We have a Windows 2003 server that has a SAN LUNS dedicated to her.  It is not shared.  It is only used by this server.   We need to virtualize it but wonder how the dedicated SAN LUNS will be included in the new virtual machine?  Some people in our Department who took the course VMware informs me that there is no way in VI3 for this.  Is this true?

Looks like he's talking about NPIV that allows each virtual machine to have its own Port.  Discover 86 of the Guide of Fibre Channel SAN Configuration for details.  It would also certainly work.

  • ESX host managed by VirtualCenter servers all see the same SAN LUNS / data warehouses

I have two separate deployments of VirtualCenter (in the same physical location) VCA and VCB with each deployment management 5 x ESX hosts (10 in total).

All 10 hosts are allowed to look at the same SAN LUNS / data warehouses?

Or I have to isolate five VCA hosts and five guests to their own SAN LUNS VCB / data warehouses?

I want to turn off a virtual machine in the direct environment and then pull it out of the inventory.

Then I want to go the VI4 Beta and browse the data store and add this virtual machine to inventory.

These two environments may see the same LUNS / data warehouses.

I did and it works however I want to make sure that it is an approved practice.

You can do that normally without any problems. Even if the virtual machine is in a different datacenter inventory and there Powred-Off. You can map the logic unit number on the VI4 and add to the inventory of the VI4 another host.

Recently, I did this practice to migrate from host with virtual machines in a different subnet to the host who knows the same setting SAN LUN in the other subnet.

  • Y at - it no downtime of ESxi hosts with vsphere upgrade 5.0 to 5.1?

During the upgrade process after asked the OSP and the inventory service, there is a point where vsphere agent must be installed on Esxi hosts. There is an automatic and a manual option. Will be the hosts be restarted if I select the automatic option?

    Thank you

The upgrade of the agent vSphere is transparent.

You can lose the remote management of vCenter for a short period, but the virtual machines on that host will work without interruption.
