SAN multisite and VMware Fault Tolerance
Hello
My apologies if this is in the wrong section.
I have a requirement for the two main rooms, with SAN and ESX hosts in each room.
In total I have, for the sake of arguments, 200 VMS, with a split 50-50, so 100 in each room Basic.
I want to use VMware of fault tolerance for machines remain operational in the event of a major failure or the other room Basic.
I think I can use Multisite SAN to do.
Please see attached diagram fo what I want to do, I know that the diagram is not correct but I drew it fast just to try to explain the scenario.
What I want to know (or have help on) is:
Is it possible to use fault tolerance in this way have no downtime in the result of a failure of basic room? (basic rooms are not very remote and use the same networks)
How does multi-site SAN work, are there articles I can read to help me understand this?
Multisite perhaps SAN iSCSI or fibrechannel?
SAN should resemble a single San for all ESXes. It doesn't matter how you do it.
> If I my synchronous SAN mirror, might simply use FT for the vcenter as well?
It is possible for the small environment. In general, vCenter requires 2 vCPU, while FT works for uniprocessor VMs only. But do not overestimate FT, it is not a universal solution and the universal answer.
> Also with FT, can you specify the server host in the cluster to act as the secondary?
Directly - no. The only way - to create link VM to any resource that is available for 2 ESXes only.

SAN with VMware Fault Tolerance storage redundancy
We built a new data center, with the idea in mind to use VMware Fault Tolerance to create a virtual environment without service interruption between two data centers. The goal is to have the VMs to continue to operate even with the loss of access to an entire datacenter, including SAN storage units.
I'm looking for a way for a vSphere 4 virtual infrastructure to be able to write to storage replicated in two different datacenters (with low latency of connections between data centers). We can do with the networks and host servers, but I found nothing in the documentation of tolerance to failures to mention something else 'shared storage' we have experienced a failure of the individual units of SAN storage (including total loss of hundreds of virtual machines) and hope that we can eliminate the unit of storage as a single point of failure.
Someone did he do it, or how it could be done?

Storage VMware fault tolerance.
Hello.
I was looking at the solution of vmware fault tolerance and have I have a question:
You can store the primary and secondary VMs on databases of dirffent? If you can, provide this storage redundancy as well?

Tanks in advance.

Deployment of Exchange Server 2013 on VMware Fault Tolerance
Hi people,
Instead of using the DAG have on the Exchange Server 2013, which is warnings for the stand-alone Exchange 2013 Server deployment and then implementation of the Vmware FT or at least HA to the availability at the hypervisor level?
With HA no problem - with FT under vSphere 5.1, you are limited to a single vCPU VM-

San virtual magnetic disk fault tolerance
If I have several magnetic disks in the disk group a single host. Is VSAN will detect this failure and if so, how?
Part 30 & #8211 VSAN. Difference between absence & amp; Degradation of components | CormacHogan.com
See Cormac's great post on absence degraded components vs. If a disk is detected as absent, vSAN will wait for 60 minutes (default value, this can be changed) to clean up. If a drive is detected as degraded, reclamation will be immediate.
He is magnetic only, a disability SSD will make the entire disk offline group. Thank you, Zach.

Little doubt about VMware Fault Tolerance
I would like to know, in case if the Virtual Machine goes down or get corrupted, the setting of Virtual Machine replica on the secondary host is going live?
Else FT is applicable only when the broken material / host, please provide details?
Both machines use the same storage and the second machine is basically running the same instructions as the first. If the first has been tampered on disk or a memory error, it appears in the second. FT is realtime protection against hardware failures.

for vmware esxi fault tolerance specifications 5
Can someone tell me where I can find documents to show me the fault tolerance support in version 5? Are we still liminted to 1vcpu? How many virtual machines can be set to feet?

Not much changed. I keep it updated constantly:

My BR request, I have to turn off FT in order to take a snapshot of the virtual machine. I found API TurnOffFaultToleranceForVM_Task to disable FT for a virtual machine. But I see no API to turn back on again. Why is there not an API to turn FT.? Is it possible that I can do this?
Thank you
Parag
For the management of fault tolerance, you will use the following methods:
CreateSecondaryVM_Task() (for a virtual machine to configure FT)
EnableSecondaryVM_Task() (turn ON FT for a virtual machine)
DisableSecondaryVM_Task() (disable FT for a virtual machine)
TurnOffFaultToleranceForVM_Task() (turn OFF FT for a virtual machine)
You can take a look at this script that I wrote to manage the IP: ftCLI.pl - VMware Fault Tolerant Managment

"Support clustering features such as fault tolerance" option greyed out (unavailable)
Hello
For a customer, we try to simulate a SQL using MSCS failover.
I found a lot of information on the configuration, using only the virtual machines.
However, for some reason, we cannot select the option 'support clustering features such as fault tolerance', when trying to create the quorum disk in Vsphere. (See the image)
We have deployed 1 DC (W2K3 - x 86) and 2 servers SQL 2005 on a W2k3 x 64 environment.
We use Vsphere 4.0 and ESX 3.5
I am relatively new to this configuration and I couldn't find any document appropriate, pointing in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.
Armand
Looking again at your attachment, the processor is on the list supported for FT, but upgrade to / with ESX 4 is also a requirement.
Its interesting to look at the limits of the feet as well. The big one for us, it's that it currently works only on Virtual Machines with 1 vCPU and no more.
Good luck!

Cannot access the fault tolerance Mode
Dear all,
I have a problem, which allows VMware ft. I have 2 IBM eServer HS12 blade with IntelCore 2 Duo E6305 CPU @ 1.86 GHz
When I turn on the machine virtual of FT it gives the following error.
Recording/playback is supported for VMS 64-bit only on some processors. Abandonment of record/replay. Unable to access the mode for fault tolerance.
Are there settings that I need to do on the host VMware ESX or VM.
Kind regards
Rahiz
Rahiz,
According to the Knowledge Base the CPU is not supported for the fault tolerance
.
Take a look at the Article KB 1008027 - processors and operating systems that support VMware Fault Tolerance

Windows for the issue of fault tolerance
I counted on 4 virtual machines running in a fault-tolerant environment.
I'm reading that I should get 2, Windows server 2008 R2 Ent. licenses because they are counted as separate servers (even if they are just redundent).
Is this true?
Do you mean 4 virtual machines protected with VMware Fault tolerance (FT) or using HA to protect an ESXi host failure?
Windows Enterprise gets you 4 total licenses for virtual machines but it is authorized by the ESXi host. So if you have two hosts of ESXi, you would need two copies of Windows Enterprise to protect the 4. VMs data center total is something much better, if you plan to have more than 4 VMs.

Fault tolerant on VMware linked clone Desktop
Hello
someone may answer whether it is possible to enable fault tolerance on linked clone VM to a master, through composer.
Client wants to protect in this way, hundreds of virtual office, I thought about using a channel 10 gigabit for the communication of FT logging, that think u dou everything?
Thank you very much
First off it is only recommended to have 4 FT running for each host, so would need you 25 hosts make 100 mV.
Secondly, I am sure that this is taken care with view.
Thirdly, also sure FT requires full VMs, clones and unrelated, so your cost of SAN will rocket sky.
Fourth and this is my favorite, it is exteremly high Windows going down until your host blocks (ESX breaks down). FT no help even in this situation as if OS1 block him operating system on the other server will crash at the same time.
FT is designed for mission critical Server VM, not of VDI.
