Help with a script. Need to host name, not the FULL domain name
I'm trying to gather a workflow that will create a user in Active directory and then install SQL server using this account for the service.
the format of the username I want is SQL_servername
I use ' hostname = vm.guest.guestId; ' to remove the host name of the virtual machine, but it returns the domain (i.e. servername.domain.name) FULL name
I tried various methods (rtrim, trim, righttrim, etc.) to remove the domain name to leave me with only the name server, but not appear to work.
Is there a way of Orchestrator to delete the domain name, or is there another function, I should use to get the short server name.
Thank you
server = hostname.substring(0, hostname.indexOf("."));

the cutting of the domain component of the host name for the use of script
Hello
I'm trying to rename my < host name > local-local data warehouses.
Pretty easy in theory as much as it is the only store of data on my host right now.
I do this
$vmhosts = get-vmhost-location < data center of choice >
for each $vmhost in {$vmhosts}
Get-vmhost $vmhost | get the data store | store game data-name '$vmhost - local.
}
Only they named
myhost.mydomain.com - local instead of
myhost-local
I am fairly new to scripting and I do not know how to cut the $vmhost down to remove the. mydomain.com beyond the end.
I noticed in powershell they mention that you can use .string to shorten the chains just doesn't seem to work.
Any help would be great.
Thank you
You can use the Split method to do this.
Something like that
$shortName = $vmhost. Name.Split('.') [0]
That what is to separate the host name in all places where there is a point.
The result is returned as an array of strings, and we want the first string

Login script to viserver with reading-host name, user name and password assecurestring
Hello
I'm connecting to a server vCenter or ESX host at the beginning of another script script, so that it is generic, I want to invite the user for the name of the server, the user name and the password and pass it to connect-viserver. I would really like to password entry to be looked at by and that you can see how to do it, but if it is stored as a secure string, it does not pass in the connect-viserver command correctly. If I remove the assecurestring - it connects very well.
$vc = read-host "enter the name of vCenter or ESX host name."
$us = read-host "enter user name".
$pw = read-host "Enter password" - assecurestring
to connect-viserver $vc - user $us - pass $pw
...
I tried to add the line:
$pw = $pw | out-string
But it is not convert it.
How to read a string safe in the command?
Thank you
Dan
Or use the script that I entered info ' Read-Host ' Encrypt

Help create messages Syslog uses the router host name
We currently have an IP SLA related to the EEM scripts that work great to send syslog messages to alert purposes. However, I would like for each router that sends a syslog to send its host name using wildcards instead of the specified host name. The cmdlet Get - Log do not create the destination folder if it does not exist, so you will need to test for this condition.
AFAIK, you don't need to connect to each ESXi individually when you are connected to the vCenter.
Since the discharge of generated log file name is rather cryptic, I rename the file normally and add a timestamp.
You could do something like that
$clusterName = "mycluster.
$FilePath = 'S:\Get-Logs\Logs\$($clusterName) ".

$varHost = get-Cluster-name $cluserName | Get-VMHost

How can I get the full domain name host name
I don't know that it should be easy enough, however I have not had much chance to figure it out myself.
Basically, I have a simple script that gets all hosts in a cluster, and rename the first store of data, of ServerName_Boot, however when I have this, I just can't find a way truncated fqdn hostname just. In this case my hostname IS exactly 14 characters if it helps.
Thanks in advance!
You try to run the split on the host object, not the name itself.
Just update it $Shortname = $VMHostname.Name.Split('.') [0]

I don't know if this is the right place to post this question, I develop software to support VMWare PCoIP and need to know how to get the host name of the physical machine (which manages the virtual machine and View Client) within a virtual machine before the user logs in Windows of the virtual machine.
I understand there are two ways to read the host name, via the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Volatile Environment registry and environment variables, but they are available once the user is connected. I need info before the user connects.
Is there a VMware API that can be called or asked the host name?
Thank you.
Not on the broker, but there are the startup scripts to log on to the computer virtual itself: http://pubs.vmware.com/view-52/topic/com.vmware.view.integration.doc/view_integration_startsession_script.9.2.html
Note that these executed when a virtual desktop computer allocated connection, not to the point that the client connects - it is possible for the customer to not complete the connection (crash, cancel, network failure) and so any what solution you design must handle this.

Creating a menu in Powershell after collecting ESX host names
Hello
I give up .
I found this script which offers a menu in Powershell (no popups). I enjoy my guests, then perform the functions.
At the end of the script after I chose the pair I want to, I'm trying to find/set a variable so that I can then use the host name for my next order.
I can't understand how to do this, because I don't understand what is happening to my choice (which I think is in the $choice variable), but $choice ends up empty when I check it manually later.
Can someone help me please? Below, you'll see my guests meeting and the call to the function.

PowerCLI - customizations on Redhat5, host name not correctly define
Hello
I'm new on using PowerCLI so I can be is silent, so say if I make a stupid mistake.
I want to create a number of machines based on a model; the only thing that will be different is the host name and IP address.
I have a CSV file:
VM, Datastore, VMhost, IP
NWB-vb85sp1rh5x64c1t1, vmfs-vb-s08, NWB - devesx01.microfocus.com, 10.120.70.167And I'm processing with the following script.
Import-Csv "
nwb-vb85sp1rh5x64.csv" | %{
Get-OSCustomizationSpec
VBautomation_VLAN70 | Get-OSCustomizationNicMapping | Set-OSCustomizationNicMapping -IpMode UseStaticIp -IpAddress $_.
IP -SubnetMask 255.255.255.0
–DefaultGateway 10.120.70.254
New-VM -VMhost $_.VMhost -name $_.VM -Template
nwb-vb85sp1rh5x64Level3 -Datastore $_.Datastore -OSCustomizationSpec
“VBautomation_VLAN70”
}
Once the machine has started, the host name is not NWB-vb85sp1rh5c1t1 but SDO-vb85sp1rh5c1t1-0 (the model, if started would have a host of SDO-vb85sp1rh5templ name, so something that happens). Is this a known issue? Someone at - he no idea how I can get the name of the ideal machine? I have a load of scripts which do various things, based on a host name and change all them that it would be a pain.
Thank you very much.
I suspect that the NamingScheme in your OSCustomizationSpec could be wrong.
You can change this with the Set-OSCustomizationSpec cmdlet.

PowerCLI script for join ESXi hosts to Active Directory
Is there a script that I can run to join the ESXi hosts Active Directory? I have over 100 guests that I need to join AD and want to add it script instead of using the GUI VC.
Thank you!
Matt
You can browse all of your servers, but you would need to make fully automated, is get the credentials somewhere.
You have different passwords on all ESXi servers?
In this case, you could do something like that
$cred = get-Credential # prompt for user and password
Get-VMHost |
Set
-VMHostADDomain
-ADJoin
:
$true
-Domain
$domain
-Credential $cred
If you do not have the same account/password for all servers ESXi, you want probably asked for each host.
You could possibly temporarily store in a file and read this file.
$accounts = @ {}
Import-Csv "C:\accounts.csv" | %{
$accounts [$_.hostname] = $_.password
}
Get-VMHost |
Set
-VMHostADDomain
-ADJoin
:
$true
-Domain
$domain
-User root -Password $accounts[$_.Name]
The CSV file contains 2 columns, called host name and the other called password.
We read the CSV file and store the passwords in a hash table, where the host name is the key.
We use the hash table to fetch the password of the Set-VMHostADDomain cmdlet tree.
