Size of data store

I have a dell poweredge 2900 with a 12 to raid 5. OK, I installed esxi. However it is to see the CT 12 but when I try to use it it says only 768 AMS are available. I think that the maximum size is 2 TB for esx and esxi. I was hoping to get esxi build a data store on the raid to the limit of 2 TB. Ideally, I wanted more than one partition on the raid 2 TB. is there any hope here. What is my options to use this server. Im a pretty new on this product and would appreciate some guidance on how to run esxi with this 12 to raid array.

Datastore ESX/ESXi VMFS LUNS must not be greater than 2 to 512 b size... You'll want to use the configuration tools RAID (bios level generally) to carve up the storage falls within these parameters.

    Does anyone know why the option of block size to store data in the client default vSphere to 1 MB in size?  I see in the tutorials and blogs, there are options in the updated section in shape for up to 8 MB?

    Don't forget, when you upgrade from an earlier version of VMFS, the block size is preserved. Newly put VMFS-5 data warehouses have a unified 1 MB block size.

    What would be the easist way to add the total datastore size and remaining datastore size to the following.
    I do emphasise, esasiest, since I'm as green as can be to powercli, powershell for that matter. I'm trying to learn in babysteps

    At the moment I get day like this, I get to the above.

    The $_ represents the object that has been passed through pipeline (the ' |') of the previous cmdlet.

    For example

    Get - VM | %{$_. Name}

    The cmdlet Get - VM will get all the VMs on the servers of vSphere to which you are connected.

    The pipeline ('|) ') said these VM objects one by one to the following code.

    In what is a Foreach-Object (alias is '%') who will send the name of the virtual machine (available in the variable $_) to the default output.

    On a Select-Object cmdlet, you can select properties of the object that was passed through the pipeline, or you can use what is called a "calculated property. Such a calculated property consists of a pair of hash, name (N) and Expression.

    Obviously, name is the name you want to give to this calculated property.

    Expression is the block of code that must be executed.

    For example

    Get-Datastore. Select Name,@{N="CapacityGB; E={$_. CapacityMB/1 KB}}

    All database objects are passed to the Select-Object cmdlet.

    The Select cmdlet displays the name of the data store, and it will display a property called CapcityGB, which displays the ability to store data in GB.

    Notice how the property CapacityMB that is present in the data store object is converted to GB by the code in the Expression block.

    The part of the Expression has not always need to do something with a property of the object that was passed.

    For example

    Get - VM | Select Name, @{N = 'Current time'; E = {Get-Date}}

    In this case the Select-Object cmdlet displays the Name property of the virtual computer object that has been sent.

    And it will display the current time as the propertyname "current time".

    This is an example of a calculated property that has nothing to with the object passed through the pipeline.

    Instant Los is crearan in el directory of the machine, in this case donde tengas el vmx.

  • Size of data store on smaller clusters

    I have a bunch of data stores in the range from 500 to 750 GB on a 3 host cluster. The SAN is a group of equallogic, which designates a raid by box group. With the latest firmware installed it is support VAAI.

    Is there a reason for me at all do not use warehouses of data of size max? I don't see an issue with about 50 VM and VAAI scsi reservations.

    You will have a depth of queue device and multiple LUNS means also several queues indeed. Even if it's the same raidgroup you will avoid always fills a single queue and hurt all your virtual machines.

  • Size of data store for just an OS LUN?

    This seems to be a silly question for me, but the alarm is shake me up.

    If I want to create a data store that is just a LUN for an OS only, what size does?

    For example, in the construction of a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine, I created a LUN on the SAN for just the OS and set it to 50GB.  Then, in vCenter, I add the storage to the ESXi hosts as a data store (lets call it OSLUN).  Then I create a virtual computer and use OSLUN as the hard drive, 40 GB provisioning (think that is all I need).  Now, because I chose 8 GB of RAM, the total of the VMDK ends up being 48Go.  vCenter launches an alert to 'Use of data to drive store' saying 49,75 GB it remains only 1.24 GB.

    It makes any sense to me, except the alarm that makes me think I'm somehow running out of space to store data... should I just ignore this alarm?  I do not see how I'd go on the space allocated for the LUN of the OS.  :\

    Unless you were to store these things on different sets of pins he won't have too much difference. Keep your environment as simple as long as you can. Adding to the complexity when it solves a specific problem not only because you can.

  • Increase in size of data store ESXi after increasing the size of the LUN

    Scenario is as follows.

    Remote site with Dell r710 ESXi 4.1 servers 2, 1 Dell MD3200i SAN with 12 600 GB drives.

    Initially when I implemented the San, I created 2 LUNS with 1 TB in each LUN.

    Now, we ran into a situation where we have 1 server which is now need more than 1 TB of sapce on it.

    I've reconfigured the table and now have a unit number logic that I spent in 2 TB to 1 TB and I now need to increase the store of data on the ESX Server.

    If I increase the size he reformatted the LUN whole or just the free space that I create?

    I don't want to remove any exisitng s VM on the SAN.

  • Swapping hard drives for change/increase the size of the data store

    Hello:

    I have an ESXi host 4.1 with 2x146GB RAID1 array (datastore1), 4x300GB RAID5 array (datastore2).  I need more space so I intend to replace 2x146GB by 2x2TB.  I'll first move virtual machines from datastore1 to datastore2, then stop the machine, Exchange records and build the new table.

    • What I need to remove ESXi cfg datastore1. before you physically remove the drives, or will start ESXi gracefully and allow me to remove the data store?
    • I'll be able to add the new data store (2x2TB) to ESXi, ago, i.e. ESXi should see table once initialized on the machine?
    • Existing data warehouses have 1 MB block size max vmdk is 256GB.  I want the new data store to have the block size of 8MB so I can have more VMDK.  I think I can fix the block size of data store when it was created, are, i.e. the ESXi installation can have warehouses of data with different block sizes, are?

    1.) why not just delete the GUI data store before you remove the discs?

    2.) If your controller has the disks properly there should be no problem with their detection.

    3.) Yes, each data store may have a different block size. The block size can be selected when creating the data store on disk/LUN.

    Create a new data store VMFS5 with a block size of 1 MB. Migrate all virtual machines store data to the new data store, and then delete the VMFS3 data store.

  • ESXI &amp; HP VSA data store size

    Is - well configured?

    I have 2 hosts HP DL360P VMware 5.5 with 2 500 GB hard drives with hardware raid 1. iSCSI data store configured with 690 GB of disk space in vSphere. 2 HP VSA is appearing 350GB of storage available. The HP CMC shows 690 GB of available disk space. When I install the volume, RAID10, and available disk space as thick, it shows a maximum of 347GB - because of RAID10 storage space.

    My concern is the gap in the amount of available storage space depending on whether display you the data in vSphere (690 GB datastore) store and the CMC showing only 347 GB of usable storage space. So in vSphere it will probably lead someone to believe that there are more storage available there are currently available on the volume.

    Is something wrong with that or should it?

    Mystery solved, someone has decreased the size of the volume in the CMC, which explains the difference in size.

  • Data store sizes do not correspond to the sizes used all the vm

    Hey guys, I'm new in Vmware and I have a background of storage and I wonder if its correct what I see when I compare the total size of all the stores of data vs the 'space used' totals of all VMs running on these data stores.

    I see a total of 139 to on data warehouses with 33 to free space and when I add the vm used all space I have a totall TB 138. It's the size of all data stores!

    This seems not very accurate for me, I expect the total space used much lower. All the vm uses eager reset thick space.

    I hope someone can explain or confirm that they see similar things?

    For used space I exported the list of all the vm XL, cut in two the column space to separate the numbers from the gb / tb, changed all amounts of GB space and have XL add up the sum of all spaces.

    a command simple cli: Get - VM | Get-hard drive - Disktype "RawPhysical", "RawVirtual" | Select name, DiskType, ScsicannonicalName, DeviceName, Parent, CapacityGB

    has given numbers for all of the ROW and that's the difference between data warehouses, I have seen and all the used vm space :-)

    The maximum size of the LUN/disk in this case is 2 TB less 512 bytes (see KB VMware: ESX/ESXi 3.x/4.x hosts don't support 2 TB LUN for more details). The maximum size of virtual disk with a block size of 4 MB, please take a look at the article I mentioned in my previous post.

    I started the implementation of a server ESXi 5.5 Update 1 this week. I didn't know Dell shipped the server with two virtual disks instead of one. I realized this _apres_ that I had already created the data store and setup a few virtual machines to the breast. I called Dell who sent specific instructions to increase the removal of the second (empty) virtual disk and add it to the main. In the end, I increased the single VD from 2 TB to 3 TB and I want to give the remaining space in my store of data.

    I tried to follow the article here that explains how to do this via the CLI.

    Well, he did not altogether. Fortunately, I was able to recover my datastore my setting start and end sectors to their original numbers. But I'm still left with this almost 1 TB of space that I can not attribute to the data store. After that I reread storage adapters in the client, the new Dell disk size resulted under measurement devices.     A couple of things to note:

    a. the device for Datastore1 ID is: naa.6c81f660ef0d23001ad809071096d28a

    b. the number of Partition on the disk is: 4 ' [...]: 4 "»

    c. the prefix, "naa," means "Network address authority" the number immediately after is a single logical unit number.

    4. Enter the amount of disk space available on the data store.

    Update:

    Since it was such a new machine, not in active production, we have safeguarded the VMs management off the ESXi host. Then flattened the virtual disk, recreated, and then created a store of data with the right size. (TPG this time, naturally.) We put the management of virtual machines on the data store. For Windows virtual machines, we have restored the using AppAssure. Everything is ok now.

    Need to add a new item to the list of punch: check what Dell has done the configuration of the virtual disks. :-)

  • Graphing calculator virtual machine by the data store size?

    Hello

    I am interested in creating a dashboard to illustrate the growth of space on a data store but by VM as apposed to the entire data store.

    I try to help track down when the space used on a datastore jump illustrating changes in the size of the virtual machine, e.g. VM is responsible.

    Ideally what I was looking for a graph with all the VM from the store of data that are selected, but I went through a variety of different dashboards and nothing seems to provide the data I'm after.

    Is there an easy way to display this type of data?

    The example I gave was dynamic. You would be populating the graph of a widget of virtual machines. This widget of VMs would be filled by selecting a data store.

    You would have 2 resource widgets and widget 1 graph. The free provider, data warehouses, will be simple a list of filters RK DSs. The following resource will receive the DS resource widget interaction and display the 'parent' and also filter by VM RK. When you select the virtual machines, select multiple interaction and it will fill on the chart widget. Then just manipulate it from there.

    If you want to get fancy, you don't have to bother with a resource interaction file and throw a metric selector between the VM resource widget and the graphic metric, then you will spend multi select multiple selection interaction and so to the graphic metric... this way you are not stuck to display only a few types of attribute in the GIR.
