• orapwd file out of sync now because I changed the sys password!

  For some reason, I couldn't get my Toad session connect with the credentials of sys, so I thought that I have blocked the account.
  I used a sqlplus session to change the sys password...
  As soon as I hit enter on the command commit, I knew that I messed up. I remember reading that the sys password must be identical.
  I found my notes on what I had the sys attributed to the last day before, and which would correspond to what it was supposed to be on the primary.
  I changed it back, but still the day before has lost the connection of pulse and throws failures in the primary alert log.
  
  Is anyway this sync everything up without having to take down the two databases and recreate the password file?
  
  My research have all returned nothing but how to create the file, it's self.

  If you change the sys password then the pwd file should be updated with the new password. If you are concerned about the replacement of the file password standby with primary... Make a backup copy of the file on hold and then put spikes in place. It should work without problems.

  Not a question, I can me asking, but I'm looking for a complete as a possible answer to this question:

  Where maintenance of eBS, upgrade,... is clogging, the SYS password?

  Reason for asking is: database administrator - who is not a Director of the eBS - asks if it is possible that the SYS password is maintained by DBA only, not by Apps DBA.

  For clarity; It is database SYS user, no SYSTEM.

  An Apps DBA, I want access to the SYS account for various reasons:

  -Grant/revoke privileges on schema objects (esp for the customer drawings)

  -Maintain the database (change data files, storage spaces,... etc)

  Start/stop of the database

  .. etc.

  If you have two different groups on your team (Apps DBA and Core DBA) who maintain the database/application so he can take care of the above. However, if your Apps DBA are the only ones who take care of all the components of EBS, then having access to SYS is required.

  I have an application that allows a central application administrator - this ID in an ID of Oracle application matches with no object, but of many rights. Because they need to reset passwords for regular user the role 'ALTER USER' Gets granted to this user. Do some testing, I found that this user has rights to modify the SYS password now! (and any other user SYSDBA). Documentation confirming this:
  
  Security administrators are usually the only users who have this privilege of system because it allows a change of any user security domaine.*
  
  Now, my solution is to remove the ALTER USER privilege and let the password back to the ADMINISTRATOR (i.e. me), but I was wondering if anyone knows a solution that will allow a user to modify other database user passwords, but exclude the SYS password still?
  
  FYI, it works 11.1.0.7 on 64-bit Windows. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  Two possible solutions.

  One that suits, as described by Justin, is to create a stored procedure / package owned by SYS that ALTER USER built-in features and grant execute on the procedure for the role. Code of procedure may, in particular, monitor, audit and allow/reject changes.

  A simpler, but not nearly as robust, solution is a DDL event trigger that throws an exception if someone tries to edit the information of the selected users.

  Seems to be caused by a corrupt installation of Visual C++ (several versions can be installed-by-side).
