Storage vmotion, between data warehouses when the block size is different

Hi all

I would like to know, is it possible to do a vmotion of storage between two data warehouses, when they have different block sizes. The case is as a former vmfs data store 3 which has been upgraded direct to vmfs5 there, but since it has been updated it maintains its own block size. While the newly created vmfs datastore 5 a block size of 1 MB.

Thus, storage Vmotion will work in this case? It will fail OR will be with degraded performance?

Finally, storage vmotion is possible even if you do not have a cluster DRS for storage?

Thank you

Yes you can!

  • Movimentacao between data warehouses

    Pessoal, tirem minhas questions, please:

Preciso mover some VMs between data warehouses, para Espaço realocacao, mas o client não possui o Storage VMotion. Then devo mover na mao mesmo:

    1. Desligar o servidor
    2. Remover o servidor inventario
    3. Mover a pasta server between os data warehouses (explore data store / move directory)
    4. Readicionar o servidor ao inventario
    5. Ligar o servidor

The EU Dai usaria o Storage VMotion e depois colocaria a licença of volta.

  • Migration of VMs between data warehouses

I added a new data store to a vSphere 5.5 infrastructure and created a few scheduled tasks to migrate under tension on the virtual machines between data warehouses.

The migration is successful, but on the source data store, I still see a lot of files for some migrated VMs, including the .vswp and vmware files - xx.log.

This means that the scheduled task has failed?

What have I to do to completely move virtual machines?

Should I turn off and turn on the virtual machine?

    Concerning

    Marius

Maybe this file are simply zombie files, generated cause an improper shutdown of the VM (take a look at the date of creation/modification of files). You can try to rename these files, if you are able to do so, these files aren't really in use. After you rename and make sure that the virtual machine works as expected, you can manually delete the files.

  • SVMotion migration between the block sizes

Suppose I have a virtual machine with a 300 GB hard drive on a data store with a block size of 2MB. Then, suppose I want to svmotion migrate this VM to the data store with a block size of 1 MB. What will happen? It will produce just a mistake, or he'll screw up the VM?

    I'm under vCenter4 and ESX 3.5 hosts.

Just because I wanted to see what the error said I did a migration cold of a 300 GB vmdk to a blocksize data store 1 MB.   Strange, quite all the validation came during that successful and then after clicking next (when it starts the copy of the file) it gave me the error concerning the size of the block.   The error went something like this test/test.vmdk file is larger than the maximum size supported by the data store 'data store name ".

  • Cannot see reverse data warehouses in the model

    Hi all

I am trying to reverse both PeopleSoft custom defined in an Oracle database tables and bring them to ODI.
However, even if the reversal of the process itself (standard and custom) doesn't give any errors, I can't see the data stores in the model.

I connect to the Oracle database using a user id that is not sysadm. This user had only read access to the two tables and sys.dba_objects (initially, while doing a reversal on measure, it was an error which I understand that sys.dba_objects need to access) above.
I am able to query and read data from tables using sql developer using this new user.

I believe also that the topology has been set up properly and I could do a ping of the database by using the user successfully when you set the physical schema.

Advice as to why I can't see data warehouses in the model even after the overwhelming success?
    Help any will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Vivek

    Yes,

The latter request must show any xxxx of the user table, and he did not.

Take a look if the objects you need to reverse are not synonymous. If that's true, if they are public or private and the true owner of the table referenced by the synonym...

  • storage on the block sizes and vmfs5 issue

We just bought a new table with a feature called FlashDisk SSD read caching.

the implementation of suppliers of this technology is the following: it basically puts cached applications frequently read blocks that are 16 KB or smaller in dedicated controller SSD, up to 1.6 TB per controller.

We worry about what we paid extra money for SSD read cache and I was wondering if it will ever come into play because VMFS5 file system uses the block size of 1 MB.

WE have Oracle DB currently set to use 8 k block size.  Now if VMFS collects the Oracle 8 KB please and puts them in blocks of 1 MB, then Im I right to believe that the read SSD cache pool will never be used?  y at - it a way to allow the Oracle 8 KB blocks to get to take advantage of the SSD cache using file vmfs5 reading system?  or is the necessary RDM here?

    Thank you!

Now if VMFS collects the Oracle 8 KB please and puts them in blocks of 1 MB, then Im I right to believe that the read SSD cache pool will never be used?

No, your assumption is incorrect. The size of the block VMFS is only for the sake of allocation/address of the files on the will. The size of the block VMFS has no influence IO issued by the virtual machines.

This means that a request for/o 8 k of a VM will arrive as an application of e/s of the same 8 KB on the backend storage.

The VMFS block size is completely independent and transparent to both, the back-end storage device and the behavior of the computers own IO virtual.

  • Change the block size of 1 MB (4 MB or 8 MB)

    Hi all

I'm in a delemia.  I have an ESXi installed 4.1 vSphere but I used the block of 1 MB by default when the size isstalling ESXi.  I have turned Virtual Machines for some time on this topic and may not all simply re - install the ESXi again.  I am currently in need greater than 256 GB drives in my virtual machines.

What I read for possible patches to change the 1 MB to 4 MB or 8 MB data store to support more than 256 GB drives is to add to the new temporary HDD on the server and create a new store of data on it with the block size of 4 or 8 MB and then migrate the virtual machines to the new larger block size datastore.  Then re - initialize the original 1 MB data store such as a 4 or 8 MB and migrate to the original data store.

    Two questions about this:

    (1) is my eventual detailed correction?  In other words, I add another, say, 8 MB block size datastore, although I have implemented the ESXi server as a 1 MB? Or will it just automatically initiaize the new temporary data store like 1 MB anything?

    (2) If this correction is possible, the passage of the VMS in a data store from 1 MB to 8 MB data store will have reprecussions?  In other words, move a Virtual Machine with the 1 MB block size to a data store with 8 MB is a problem with this virtual machine?

    Any suggestion would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the community,

You can format each data store (which is just a partition with a type of VMFS partition) with a different block size and move the VM back if you wish. However, if your hardware supports ESXi 5.x, this can be an easier way to solve the dilemma, because after the upgrade to ESXi 5.x, you can also upgrade the VMFS3 data store to VMFS5 which supports the file (virtual disk) sizes of up to ~ 2 TB with a unified 1 MB block size.

  • confusion about the block size

    Hello
I doubt very simple but fundamental, I really want to know what exactly is the block size, now my confusion is to say we have 100 members in account dimension (all are store) which is dense, and we have dimension period with 18 members, who is also dense.now on 100 members account only 50 of them have values stored in them so that the size of the block will be 50 * 18 * 8 , or will it be 18 * 100 * 8

    Thanks in advance

The size of the block is constant, regardless of the data.

The density of this block varies with the data.

The storage needs of the blocks on the changes to disk with the density of the block.

    Kind regards

  • Change the block size? vSphere ESXi 4.1.0.

    Hello world

I wanted to create a third virtual machine, but the existing computer hard drive was large (GB 266), because I had created a VMFS with 1 M block :-(

I searched a lot of log and manuals, but I couldn t find an answer, how to change the block size of the data to 2 M store.

    I m using vSphere ESXi 4.1.0.

Then I tried to export the VM´s to set up the new host of VM with another block. But I m not able to find a filebrowser in the vSphere Client.

How to export or save a virtual machine or a snapshot.

In the FAQ, it is described to "Open the filebrowser", but where it is hidden?

Thank you very much for your help.

    Dear all,

What is dependent on the block size of oracle on the size of block o/s?

    Concerning

Oracle data block is the smallest logical unit to store oracle data and that's usually multiple o/s block size.
