Same problem, hating computer2,

I have restored my Dell Dimension 3000 for 2005 Winxp sp2, and I went in circles with microsoft.  Bottom line people, Windows XP with Service Pack 2 is no longer supported.  AND most of the WinXP CD come with SP2.  I think that microsoft is TRYING to make it difficult to continue to use Windows XP, they want to update, but I'd rather Win XP Pro!

See this recent & related thread-online http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/the-website-encountered-a-problem-and-cannot/0c919ed3-489f-4b29-b6d1-e7968eb47083

Or you can follow the instructions in this post of mine in another forum (to-the-letter & in order! ) to restore your computer to a State safe & functional: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=44636

Note: The computer must NOT be connected to the internet or local area network (i.e. other computers) in its current state. All your personal data (e.g., banking online & passwords credit card) must be considered at risk, if not already compromised.
