  ThinkVantage Power Manager has not been supported since Win7. It is reported in the community members apparently makes it work, but it is not sanctioned. There are also discussions on loading of the thresholds through registry changes. Please be careful if you choose to pursue it.

  Unless you want to venture out on the way to Bumblebee, your best bet may be simply set the display on discrete graphics device in BIOS-> Config-> display configuration. Ubuntu 11.10 should install and run reasonably OK using a 32-bit kernel (see a recent thread on the W520 and 64-bit kernels). If you don't mind installing the NVIDIA drivers, you can try the. You will probably get a little better performance out of them, but you need to address to re - install these drivers, whenever the kernel is updated.
