Update ESXi 4.1 Build 260247 to ESXi 4.1 Update 3

Hello

I want to update a stand-alone host to ESXi 4.1 Update 3. I don't have vCenter or VUM in the environment (yet). I downloaded the bundle "update - from - esxi4.1 - 4.1_update03.zip" and have the vSphere CLI installed on my workstation.

I use vihostupdate.pl to check the server and the applicability of the patch before I go and install and he seems to think there is nothing there to install.

From what I can tell, this is a cumulative update and I have not read anywhere that I need to install the update 1 or 2 update as a prerequisite, so why are they not those detected?

Here is the output from the various controls:

What is the upgrade path?  I was able to update our server ESX 4.0 but due at the time of the new version, I had just installed 4.1 build 260247 on our new box of ESX.  Then update, we're out.  I used the Update Manager to upgrade the 4.0 server to the latest version (4.1 update 1 / 348481 to build using the file "upgrade-from-esx4.0-to-4.1-update01-348481.zip" via the Update Manager.)  Worked like a charm.  Now, oddly enough it doesn't seem to be a clear path to upgrade to 4.1 260247 4.1 Update 1 / build 348481.  I would have assumed it would be an easy task using the Update Manager.  What Miss me.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

There is no need to manually download packages of fixes. After you install and configure the Update Manager, it will show you the fixes available in the repository. All you need to do is create a baseline with updated patches 1 and attach it to objects you want. Update Manager will automatically download patches. If not already fact, take a look at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsp_vum_41_admin_guide.pdf for more details

  • Update for ESXi 4.1 GA to ESXi 4.1 U2

Is it possible to update via VMWARE CLI - vihostupdate of ESXi 4.1 BUILD 260247 directly to U2? OR should I update ESXi4.1 GA to U1 and then install U2 after restart and update to U1

Download page for VMware has not specifically the wording to go to ESXi 4.1 No. Update for U2.

ESXi 4.1 Update 2 (ZIP upgrade of ESXi 4.0)

    Anyone?

Since the GA version, you can go directly to a patch of updated XX. You can find the hotfix package to the wrong download location. Since it is a patch rather than upgrade, it can be found at http://www.vmware.com/patchmgr/download.portal.

  • VMtools and ESXi 5.0 update - can I do ahead of time?

    Hello

I have a host running ESXi 4.1 (build 260247) I intend to upgrade to ESXi 5.0. This server hosts a few Windows 2003 and 2008 boxes that have need for committing patches to Windows and install VMtools is also obsolete. For the moment, I think the appropriate course of action would be: -.

    (1) apply Windows patches to virtual machines

    (2) stop the virtual machines

    (3) ESXi upgrade to v5.0

    (4) to set up the virtual machines and upgrade VMtools

    (5) restart the virtual machines.

This seems a bit complicated, so I want to see if it is possible to do it like this:-

    (1) apply Windows patches to virtual machines (no reset)

    (2) VMtools upgrade to the version provided with ESXi 5.0 (no reset)

    (3) stop VMs

    (4) ESXi upgrade to v5.0

    (5) set up the virtual machines

This would eliminate the need to perform an additional restart for virtual machines. Is this possible?  ESXi 4.1 will work with VMtools of ESXi 5.0? I suppose also that using the Update Manager to manage the implementation to date will not erase the local VMFS containing virtual machines?

    See you soon

    JD

    Hello

5 VMTools is fully compatible with ESXi 4 see here

However you are missing 1 step

    (1) apply Windows patches to virtual machines (no reset)

    (2) VMtools upgrade to the version provided with ESXi 5.0 (no reset)

    (3) stop VMs

    (4) ESXi upgrade to v5.0

    (5) set up the virtual machines

Before set you up the virtual machines, you must upgrade the virtual hardware to ver 8 (ver 7 on vSphere 4)

  • patching esxi hosts

We have esxi4.1 build 260247 on 3 hosts.

What is the way of easieast patch guests. I've heard of the ESXI Setup utility and use it to make backups of my hosts configs, but never used for updates.

I am looking for the way faster and easier to do.

    Advice would be appreciated.

Update Manager is on the vCenter Server installation DVD/ISO.

You have a shared storage? If not, you cannot update the host on which vCenter Server works with the Update Manager.

  • Mixed ESXi hosts in cluster?

    Hi all

Running a cluster of 4 guests with ESXi 4.1.0 build 260247.  Have two new guests, I would like to add to this cluster.  From what I can tell, running ESXi 4.1.0 build 348481 on these hosts should not be a problem.  It would last less than a day or two, as former guests will be promoted to the same version/construction of ESXi, if time permits.  All the world run into a similar situation with negative results?

Your insight would be greatly appreciated!

    Kind regards

  • ESXi 4.1 with 2.7 to RAID server only has a 750 GB data store

I have a server ESXi 4.1 Build 260247. It has a controller Adaptec 5805Z with 2.7 TB RAID6 material. The ESXi is installed and running on a USB key. The server runs a lot and don't have any problem with the performance, but what I failed to note (after the creation and configuration of the 7 servers for an Exchange 2010 lab) is that the datatstore1 is only 740,75 GB. I looked everywhere in vSphere and online on how to access the rest of this storage. Under configuration > hardware > storage it shows the 'Adaptec disk Local (mpx.vmhba2:C0:T0:L0)", type = parallel SCSI disk to Transport, 2.73 Capasity TB.

How can I access the additional storage on the disk? I certainly don't want to have to reinstall the LAB if I have to. Attempts to increase its size in the properties of the data store has failed. No error, that he just does nothing nothing found...

Creating logical volumes on the RAID is a feature or function of the RAID controller, respectively the RAID controller software. Most RAID controllers authorize splitting of the RAID (unless it's a RAID level 0 x) in several logical volumes. You will need to check this for your RAID controller.

You should probably migrate VMS off the coast of the current data of 750Go store and delete data store. Then, remove the current volume of 2.75 to logical and create a new logical volumes - maximum 2 TB - 512 bytes by using the controller BIOS or software RAID.

  • Cannot run script .pl in ESXi 4.1

    Hi all

I want to install Nagios in VMware ESXi. But I found the problem when running the script.

    /vmfs/volumes/4d418fae-5f542615-60d7-e41f13452b96/VMware-vSphere-CLI-distrib #./vmware-install.pl
    -Ash:. / vmware - install.pl: not found

So please suggesst me, how to install perl on it?

My ESXi version is 4.1 build 260247

    Thanking you in advance!

If you do an Internet search for 'orders with ESXi console' you will find many sample documentation.  The preferred method of scripting for ESXi is to use the vCLI (vSphere Command Line Interface) or PowerCLI PowerShell Add-on.  Access your host a console is more for troubleshooting purposes.

  • ESXi 4.1 connectivity issues

I run a Server Build 260247 ESXi 4.1.0. I loaded and IP, but I am unable to connect to the box using vSphere.

I looked at the next post

    http://communities.VMware.com/message/1650156

I get the same error as shown in this bug.

The only way I can get the system works is to have a continuous ping in the area of ESXi to the gateway.

Also, when I install VM on the ESXi host share the same NETWORK card, these virtual machines are able to access the network but just vSphere does not connect.

Just a quick scan of your previous posts makes you want to ask if it is possible that you have a duplicate somewhere MAC addresses on your network?

  • ESXi disconnects from the vCenter

    Hello VMware,

I have some problems with ESXi 4.1.0 (Build 260247) disconnect vCenter. I am currently evaluating Vmware View. I have no problem connecting to an ESX host to vcenter. When connecting vCenter ESXi host host will connect for about a minute and then disconnect. VCenter, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and ESXi host is all on the same network without any firewall between the two.

I have an I tried by using the knowledge base article titled "Diagnose an ESX Server that is offline or does not respond in VirtualCenter" without success. I can connect the ESXi host with ssh and ping various servers on the network using dns and ip addresses.

Is attached a copy of the message, pass and vxpa journal of the ESXi host.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Since the log files, it seems that you use vServers 4.0.

    Section for VMware VirtualCenter Agent, pid = 56646, version 4.0.0 build = build-208111 =, = exit option

The host ESX (i) 4.1 require vCenter Server 4.1, this is why you must upgrade to vCenter Server to make it work.

  • ESXi 4.1 installation hangs on Fujitsu RX200 S4 Fijitsu

    Hi all

I try to install ESXi4.1 (build 260247) on a Fujitsu RX200S4 with SAS-RAID based on LSIMegaRAID 5/6 (latest firmware).

    MD5 ISO is OK.

ESXi starts, load all the necessary modules and complete hangs after that the 'installation' screen will appear (press "enter" to start the installation)

I tried with two different (LSI MegaRAID 1/0 and LSIMegaRAID) RX200S4 5/6. The two servers are in the list of the supported HW.

Just a millisecond before appears this (gray) screen, I see a warning that SYSLog is not configured? Don't know if this could

cause this problem (see the video attachment I captured with my iPhone...)

I have two ESXi running on RX300 and RX330 without problem.

    Thanks for your help

Not sure if this can help.

There are a couple of posts related to problems with initializing keyboard for different systems.

You can try to run the installation with a USB keyboard, once it "freezes" in the mentioned dialog box connect the keyboard to a different USB port.

  • Update update 1 - in the meantime the vpxa update

    Hi all

Currently have 3 x ESXi 4.1 guest manageded by a vCenter 4.1 VM in a production environment.  We want to upgrade to update 1 to answer a few questions, so I'm building an env from test to test the upgrade.

Build 2 hosts ESXi4 4.1 (build 260247) and they managed with a vCenter 4.1 (build 258902) who took up my production facility.  I installed the server vCenter Update Manager and improved one of the hosts to update 1 (version 348481) and it worked fine.  Then I thought that I should upgrade vCenter before another host because I came across messages saying vCenter occasionally don't like newer versions of host.

The upgrade to vCenter update 1 went very well but when I went back to the customer, only my newly improved host connected.  The host of the previous version has been disconnected with error

cannot syncronzie host testesxi1.  A general error occurred: pending update vpxa

disconnected testesxi1 in vcenter-test.  Reason: upgrade Agent

Why what happened?  I need to update my hosts before my vCenter installation is upgraded?

    Thank you

    Andy

You may simply need to 'push' the new vpx agent to the ESXi host again.  Can disconnect from host to vCenter and then connect it back.  This should kick off the installation vpxa again.

It can happen because your host has been improved first and had an older vCenter agent.  As you mentioned vCenter and there modules must always be upgraded first.  You upgrade VUM too I guess?
