Update VCenter 4.1u3 with builtin SQL 2005 Express v5.1?
Hi people,
Can someone please tell me if the upgrade path is supported without problem as possible for my script below:
Existing: VCenter 4.1u3 installed as Windows Server 2008 64 bit standard VM with the database running in SQL SERVER 2005 Express (embedded).
to be upgraded online to:
Proposed: VCenter 5.1u1b installed as Windows Server 2008 64 bit standard VM with the database running in SQL SERVER 2005 Express (shipped).
VCenter 5.1u1 comes with SQL Server 2008 Express or reuse it just the existing integrated DB?
Because when I specify using products VMware interoperability Matrices it displays all the comments in the table.
Hello
You can upgrade vCenter server 4.1Update03 to 5.1Update01a, and it keep MSSQL2005 express Embedded DB and data in it. VCenter server upgrade with no problems found. I think that the product of VMware interoperability matrix titles only to distance/Custom not Database not the fact embedded database part of the vCenter server installation.
If this isn't a supported database, upgrade to vCenter server would have failed to be upgraded with the inconsistent database or considering implementing in custody.
During the upgrade to vCenter server 5.1Update01a, it asks you to install Single Sign and the inventory service.

vCenter 4.1 on SQL 2005 express upgrade to vc5
Hello
Am looking for first upgrade our environment for vsphere 5... first step is to vcenter. I've read a lot of threads on this topic... but each looks different... Some say to database backup and uninstall it all... others suggest upgrading the database to 2008 r2 first, etc.
VSphere 5 has been out for several months, this is a generally accepted approach for upgrading to vcenter 4.1 to 5 located on 2005 express?
My configuration:
-vcenter installed on 64-bit Windows 2008 R2-The 32 bit SQL 2005 express database
-You are looking at using SQL 2008 R2 express as database
-Looking at on place upgraded on the same server 64-bit currently in
All advice appreciated.
ilyo - I just made this update even 2 weeks ago. See the process I followed here:

vCenter and SQL 2005 Express on the same physical machine
I'm new on the VMware environment and am a little concerned about my VMware infrastructure and design. I have 3 boxes physical accommodation 15 virtual servers. I have a 4th server that hosts the database SQL and vcenter. I am wondering what are my chances of having vCenter and SQL 2005 express installed on the same box? That suggest VMware as best practices concerning this configuration? If this configuration is ok, what are my options to protect myself in case the box with vCenter and the SQL database dies? Thank you
VMware sets a limitation to 5 guests and 50 wen invited you use SQL Express. I run it with 6 guests and 48 guests (incl. models) on the same machine as the server vcenter. That's not what I want to keep and we will change to a standard SQL 2005 on a separate server from SQL (which we had with SQL 2000 and before VI3).
But I didn't have one problem with this configuration, again.
With both on the same server may lead to a conflict: SQL 2005 requires IIS but vCenter uses ports. So I installed it but disabled.
I think also that separating the two tracks faster that have it all on the same box.

Best practices for vCenter 5.1 with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
I am looking for a best practices or really any documentation on configuring vCenter 5.1 with a SQL Server 2008 R2 database. I see that SQL Server 2008 R2 is supported, but that's all. Any help is appreciated.
Unless you have a huge (and I mean huge) environment, the vCenter database in general is not that big of a deal or go-getter and was apparently not deemed worthy for some secret magic tips because of this.
Standard SQL "best practices" and observe the standard installation documentation when deployment vCenter and you should be good to go.
Some documents on the vCenter more in-depth database are here:

Hello
What is the critical error-
SQL Server does not exist or accessdenied. {NativeErr 08001, = 17}
coming from SQL * Server. The bridge that makes the connection, but then hit a problem SQL * Server itself.
When other customers have had this error, the solution was to modify the SQL * Server configuration port based instead of named instances.
Could check you with your SQL * Server DBAs?
If you have access to My Oracle Support look at that note.
DG4MSQL gives an error - SQL Server does not exist or the access denied - with NativeErr 17 and 67 (Doc ID 1482030.1)

Connection of ColdFusion with MS SQL 2005
Please help with this question, if you have any suggestions. I am trying to establish a connection to my IIS with ColdFusion server to another local server with a database of MS SQL 9.0. I can connect to this database using Enterprise from another computer, but when I use the same user name and password in ColdFusion I get the following error:
Connection verification failed for data source: FORMS
java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia] [SQLServer JDBC Driver] [SQL Server] Login failed for user 'domain\coldfusion '. The user is not associated with a SQL Server login that is approved.
The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia] [SQLServer JDBC Driver] [SQL Server] Login failed for user 'domain\coldfusion '. The user is not associated with a SQL Server login that is approved.
I have reinstalled ColdFusion without error and have also installed the JDBC MS MS SQL 2005 driver but still the same error.
Thanks for your suggestions you may have.
CraigIf there is no one else with this problem, I have something you can try. It worked for me and I can't connect to SQL 2005 using ODBC Socket. The IIS computer has been using the system identification information and not the power of ColdFusion, I had created.
On the ColdFusion application server goto the properties of the Server ODBC and the CF officer. Under LogOn change the connection information for the username and password you have set up for ColdFusion for both and then restart these services. When you configure your ODBC Socket do not include the username or password information.
I hope that CF8 will include Windows authentication. Even with this workaround, we will have to mixed authentication on SQL which is not ideal.

Is VirtualCenter 2.5 SQL 2005 Express Database limitted to 5 guests
I heard that when VirtualCenter 2.5 use SQL SERVER 2005 Express, it is limited to only 5 guests and 50 virtual machines.
Is this fair?
Wee using SQL SERVER 2005 Express and have 4 hosts (esx servers) and nearly 50 virtual machines.
Now we need to install 2 guests most, witch would require us to install a new SQL Server, if it is limited to 5 hostsL
Hello
Yes, you heard right. The database delivered with VC, i.e. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express database allows you to configure a limited number of hosts and virtual (5 guests and 50 virtual machines).
Please go through page 14 of this doc: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_installation_guide.pdf
I suggest you to upgrade SQL Server 2005 Express to SQL Server 2005.
Thank you.

VMware vCenter service stops with size of DB SQL errors
Hello
We run VMware vCenter 4.1 with 3 ESX hosts and VMs. 50 vCenter runs on Windows 2008 R2, SQL 2005 Express SP2.
Yesterday, our virtual backup failed, saying: it could not connect to the vCenter agent. When I have looged question, it appeared that he had stopped the vCenter Server service. Upward on the continuation of the investigation, it appears that the SQL Express database had reached 4 GB in size, which is limited, and this caused the vCenter fall service.
I checked some of the forum posts and have accomplished the following:
- Define a retention policy of database for tasks and events, it is initially unchecked, but I checked and set it to 90 days in the beginning and now 30 days.
- Found a script on the VMware forum called VCDB_table_cleanup_MSSQL_V4.X.sql that can clean the database. I put it to delete the old data (change of SET @DELETE_DATA = 1) 90 days and he kidnapped 130 000 + lines.
- Performed a narrowing of the database & file shrink on the data file - I was only 9 MB back?
- Performed a narrowing of the database & file shrink on the log file - it right back a little more, about 100 MB.
- Changed the size of the log file of 460 MB to 1024 MB, in database properties > settings files.
However, even after all of the above, when I reboot the server, or stop and start the service vCenter, the following errors are recorded in the application log:
-------------------------------------------

the message resource is present, but the message is not in the string/message table
-------------------------------------------Can anyone provide another solution to this problem? We must be able to perform a successful backup!
For any help or suggestions appreciated!
Ben
Due to the size of the database, the query may take time. I suggest that you let run and just be patient.
Another option is to upgrade to a version of SQL Server 2005/2008 'complete' (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/7960893), or - where this is an option for you - to migrate towards the currently experimentally supported (starting with vCenter Server 4.1 Update 1) version SQL Express 2008 which supports up to 10 GB per database. (see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf) Although there are 32 and 64 bit in compatibility matrix, it seems that there are currently problems with 64-bit (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1036085)

The upgrade of Microsoft SQL SERVER 2005 Express
I think I know the answer to that, but I need to confirm. I have an environment vSphere 4.1 and am planning on the upgrade to vSphere 5. When I installed vsphere 4.1, I used the Microsoft SQL SERVER 2005 Express database because I didn't have a license and my environment is low. The question I have is that if I upgrade to vSphere 5 that comes with Microsoft SQl 2008 express edition installation will improve my SQL 2005 Express?
Thanks for your help.
SB
I don't believe it - I believe that you use on the vcenter data migration tool to move data from sql 2005 to sql exp 2008 exp - there steps http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-50-upgrade-guide.pdf

Migration of Vcenter DB from SQL SERVER 2005 to SQL 2008 Express
Hello
I'll migrate the physical vcenter server to a virtual machine, then I'll install a new VM with OS 2008R2 and SQL2008. But I need the migration plan
vCenter DB from SQL 2005 to SQL2008. VMware also recommendsNote: 1) VMware recommends now IP address and host name the same information to facilitate the migration.
(2) software migration to different vCenter Server, Manager of update or VMware Orchestrator. For example, Site Recovery Manager is not migrated.
(3) move the VMware Orchestrator database. You must do it manually.
We can give to vcenter server new name and IP and if yes what will be then problem occur after the post migration.
Thank you
vmguy
It takes to keep the same name and IP address? If we will give different vcenter and IP server name then how will transfer of post stage
If you can keep the same name of host and IP, this would make it so much easier. That said, if you need to change the host name and IP address of vCenter you can run into issues where all your guests appear as disconnected. Usually, you can right click and choose 'connect', asked credentials for your hosts of ESXi, but after that they should remain connected.
In addition, just in case I posted above another KB.

The upgrade to vSphere + SQL Express to SQL 2005 + new vCenter Server
Hello world
It's the scénarion that I have today:
A node just two HA/DRS cluster with vCenter 2.5 update 4 and two esx 3.5 update 4.
The environment has increased enough to move from SQL Express to SQL 2005 standard. In the process, I want to upgrade the environment to vSphere and the vCenter move another box.
I'm quite familiar with the process of vSphere upgrade but I donít know how to move the vCenter to another machine AND I do not know how to go from Express to the standard version of SQL in the process. (I have a SQL machine ready for use)
I do not know how to handle all the changes here, I thought it would be nice to all move to the new machine and DB so that I could continue with the upgrade to vSphere, if this has meaning or not, I'm waiting for your ideas.
I hope someone will give me some guidance on moving from SQL Express to SQL and how to move vCenter to another server (of course with a different server name and IP address)
Thanks in advance for your support.
I just did something very similar a few Sundays ago and it was really easy. Refer to the section of the Upgrade Guide that talks about upgrading to vCenter on another Machine... (starts at p. 49). We went from SQL 2003 32 bits on 32-bit Windows 2003 to SQL 2005 64-bit on Windows 2008 R2 64-bit. Both are running as VMs - vCenter 2.5 is still there only as a license server - until I get all my hosts upgraded.

3. do you have a free trial Norton or a test of free McAfee [CHOOSE ONE ANSWER] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (No matter if you have never used or activated).
4. open Add/Remove Programs and make sure that Show updates at the top is checked (and leave it checked); then select the name in the box sort by on the right. Now do scroll down & tell me if ALL the other updates following up-to-date are listed?
