Upgrading to ESX 3.5 Server update 5 & VC 2.5 update 6

Hello

This should be an easy one for someone. I'm a beginner of VMWare, who needs some advice regarding upgrades.

Our facility is:

host of x 2 - ESX 3.5 Update 4

VirtualCenter 2.5 update 4 current running on the server physical (DB connect to local SQL exp license Mgr.)

approximately 20 separate stored on SAN virtual computers

The fiber connection between servers and SAN

Looking to upgrade to the versions mentioned in the question. Here's what I think I do, can someone please confirm that I have my steps in order? Please correct me if wrong...

Intend to do a place to upgrade, server downtime is not a problem, planned upgrade at the end of week.

-Updated VirtualCenter

-Shutdown VMs boot from CD to update5 (created from ISO download) and I guess here I can update guests individually

-Then to update data warehouses SAN - how can I do this?

-Then update virtual machines

-Then update the VMware tools on the virtual machines

-Updated models

-Other stuff like Bishop Update upgrade an other plugins etc.

Also, what are the importance of backups for an update like this, that is not a major version update (i.e. 2.x to 3.x)?

Help is very appreciated!

Hello

I would like to do this way:

  1. Update Virtual Center Update 6 (make a full DB backup before update) - use MSSQL 2005 studio - works well

  2. updated - vmware update manager

  3. vMotion the VMS of off ESX1 to ESX2

  4. ESX1 upgrade (up to you, you can use the update - faster, you can use the command line, or start from ISO and perform the upgrade

  5. vMotion the VMS of off ESX2 to ESX1

  6. upgrade ESX2

  7. upgrade VMware Tools on VM - restart required after migration

  8. do not upgrade the virtual hardware, it will always be in version 4

  9. do not put VMFS data warehouses up-to-date

About backup, the backup only what you need to do is to Virtual Center Database, it would be improved during the update of the VC server.

    Please and thank you.

Hey Bachir - Welcome to the community.

One of the links above will help - I just generally recommend VMware guide as it is quite complete.

If you upgrade but, I would say that you are planning to go directly to ESXi, as VMware will stop soon developing ESX - so you can take the great leap forward at a glance and spare you pain in the future.

    Good luck.

  • ESX 4 command line upgrade to ESX 4.1

I'm upgrading to ESX 4.0 server.  It has only local storage and there are Virtual Machines on the local data store.  If I use the pre-upgrade beam and upgrad by using the command line upgrade removes the virtual machines on it re formatting of VMFS volume?

Unless you encounter unexpected problems the VMFS datastore should be preserved (otherwise it wouldn't be an upgrade). However, it is recommended to have a current backup before the upgrade in case of disaster.

Please make sure that you take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1022140 and the Upgrade Guide (you can find the link in the KB article) before you run the upgrade. Also, make sure that you meet the prerequisites, for example host supported and firmware, enough disk space hardware on / Boot and / root...

  • How do I upgrade to ESX 4.0 Update 2 to 4.0 3

Can someone provide me with a way to upgrade from ESX 4.0 update 2 to 4.0 update 3? I found that I can't do this by Vsphere update manager. I have the ESX - 4.0.0 - update03 - 398348.iso file you downloaded, do I need to burn this disc and put in there and start up to it? Who will provide a graphical user interface to upgrade? What are my options? I appreciate any help you can provide.

    Thank you

    Jeff Koelker

You cannot use the ISO file to upgrade an ESX 4.0 host existing. This is only supported for ESX 3.5 Update 5 guests. Please, take a look at for example http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esx40_u3_rel_notes.html (supported Upgrade paths to upgrade ESX 4.0 Update 3 host) to find out what options are available.

  • Windows Server Update service does not work after the installation of KB2720211

I have a Server 2008 SP1 32-bit Standard, which had the role of Server Update for the Windows software installed connected to a WSUS upstream server and everything worked, with 17 clients connected to him and get everything their approved patches.  It was a new server starting with WSUS added at this time 1 months ago.  He had to be upgraded to SP2 S2008 which I did and WSUS have continued to function.  After being on SP2, there was another 152 patches to be applied and after that WSUS does not work anymore.  It appears 1 patch that has been applied has been KB2720211 that seems to cause problems for a number of people.

The problem is that the update service does not start.  An error message comes back that the service has not responded in a timely fashion and I can't find the log files anywhere on what it is.  Here is what has been done so far all that in the same issue:

1 deleted WSUS and restarted and installed it again.

2 Remove WSUS and Windows Internal Database, restarted and installed it again (using the download of KB972466).

2.1 install SQL Management Studio and logged to an internal database SUSDB and checked it is not set to single user (I believe it is set for multiuser name but I'm going from memory)

    3. install the KB2720211.

    4. installation KB2734608

5 remove WSUS and Windows Internal Database, restarted and installed it again (using the download of KB972466).

I am looking for any information on how to solve what is the question, because there is nothing in the log files I can find and no event in the windows event viewer.  I am ready to start with the server however if there is something I can look at to possibly solve the problem, please let me know.

  • Upgrading to ESX 3.5 host to ESXi 4.1 where the VCenter is installed on the guest system

    Hello

I try to find measures to upgrade to ESX 3.5 host to ESXi 4.1 where the vCenter Server 4.1 is installed on the system of comments on this host.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

Should I move the virtual machines from the first RAID at one of the others? Whipe then come out the scores and perform ESXi 4.1 installation?

Yes, it's a way to do this.

Unfortunately, the ESXi 4.1 installation wipe the disk to complete installation (or logical volume) as you have experienced. Assuming that "logical partitions VMFS" you mentioned are logical volumes actually created in the RAID configuration (presented as individual of the operating system disks), you can migrate the virtual machine that is currently stored on data store of the installation disk to a data store on one of the other logical disks and then install ESXi.

  • 3.5 U1/U2 upgrade to ESX 4.1 from DVD?

    Hello

I read the document on the upgrade to 4.1 but I couldn't find the info is it possible to upgrade as I could before, with the start of the DVD as saying upgrade existing installation. Performance of HP with ILO hardware I can do stuff all over night but I'm not sure is - this supported. I'm always under multiple hosts with bug time bomb, and they were more then 800 days I guess.

    Damir

    Hi Damir,

You cannot start with the installation DVD and a server update more. You must use the Update Manager or Vihostupdate.

For the isolated host, there is an experimental way to do the upgrade, using the DVD or the ISO copy, which is presented in this KB.

    It will be useful.

  • the upgrade to ESX 4.1

    Hello

Do you need upgrade to vCenter 4.1 before the upgrade to ESX 4.1 guests?

I get an error message in Update Manager when I try to download the upgrade zip file.

The error I get is - impossible to import the upgrade. : Error file download.

Any idea what could be the cause?

    Thanks in advance

You must certainly vCenter upgrade before you upgrade any host ESX (i) 4.1 is only supported on vCenter 4.1. Upgrade packages are also different from those used with 4.0, which could be the reason for the error in the MUV.

  • ESXi 4.0 can be upgraded to 4.1 via the Update Manager?

    Hello

ESXi 4.0 can be upgraded to 4.1 via the Update Manager, or what I have to do it manually via vihostupdate.pl? Is it also possible to upgrade via CD offline? That is, will be the Setup routine recognizes the installed version and keep the configuration?

At least the Upgrade Guide describes Update Manager as a solution to perform the upgrade - 4.1 does not appear here yet however!

/ edit: Ah, I completely forgot that I must use the base line upgrade instead of Patch baseline. I can specify the ZIP file for the upgrade!

    Thank you

right, the Update Manager-> create-> home-setting baseline to day-> file-> download the .iso image file or image .zip of ESX (i) 4.1.

  • A virtual machine created in ESX 4 can be converted to run an ESX 3.5 Server?

The subject says it all.  Our main office has created a virtual machine on their ESX 4 server running.  They want us to use the same but we are running ESX 3.5.  We have no time to upgrade our server to 4 again.  We get an error when we try to start by saying this is not not compatible because it was created with a version with more features.

If a virtual machine created in ESX 4 can be converted to run an ESX 3.5 server using converter?

    most important:

    change

    virtualHW.version = '7' to '4 '.

    in the vmx file

    then change

    ddb.virtualHWVersion = '7' to '4 '.

    in the vmdk file

the other changes are optional - for example, you need to remove the lines that start with pciBridge and all the lines making reference to... .pciSlotNumber

also take care of not to use more then 6 PCIdevices in 4 virtual material - i.e. the sum interface cards scsi controllers + network + video cannot be greater then 6

If you have a time that is very simple and much much much faster then converter - post an example if you want

  • Someone has upgraded to ESX 3.5 U3?

We have improved and began to see that the migration of some problems with a virtual machine from one host to another.  What I see, is the virtual machine would lose complete communication and no net on the virtual computer could be disconnected.  Also, I see the VM keep a black screen when restarting and consultation through the console.  The biggest problem I see VM is just reset without reason.  This is not good.  That we are currently running on our test environment which is a good thing.  I'll open a ticket with VMware.  I'll post the results.

    Hi Will,

It is a known problem with U3.

    Title:

A Virtual Machine may restart unexpectedly when you use VMware HA with control of the Virtual Machine on ESX 3.5 Update 3

    Symptoms:

Virtual machines may restart unexpectedly after a VMotion migration to a host ESX 3.5 Update 3 OR an operation of power on an ESX 3.5 Update 3 host, VMware HA function with control of VM is active.

    Problem statement:

A virtual machine can restart when the following conditions are met:

    • Virtual machine is running on ESX 3.5 Update 3 host, either as the result of VMotion or a power on operation, and

    • Host has VMware HA, activated with the active 'Control of the Virtual Machine' option.

Control of Virtual Machine depends on pulse VMware tools to determine the State of the Virtual Machines. With ESX Server 3.5 Update 3, after a VMotion or operation of power, the home running on the ESX Server agent may delay sending the State of pulsation of the Virtual Machine to the host. VMware HA detects this as a failure of the Virtual Machine and try to restart the Virtual Machine.

    Resolution:

Note: Before you begin please see KB 1003490 for important information about the service mgmt-vmware restart.

    To work around this problem:

*Option 1: disable VM control *.

    1. Select the VMware HA cluster, then select change settings in the context menu (note that this feature can also be enabled for a cluster again on the VMware HA of the new Cluster Wizard page).

    2. In the settings of Cluster dialog box, select VMware HA in the left column.

    3. Clear the checkbox enable control of the virtual machine.

    4. Click OK.

    * Option 2:

    1. Disconnect the host VC form (host in VI Client computer right click and select "Disconnect")

    2. Log on as root on ESX with SSH server.

    3. Using a text editor such as nano or vi, edit the file /etc/vmware/hostd/config.xml

    4. Define the tag "heartbeatDelayInSecs" under "vmsvc" to 0 seconds as shown here:
      < vmsvc >
      < heartbeatDelayInSecs > 0 < / heartbeatDelayInSecs >
      < enabled > true < / enabled >
      < / vmsvc >

    5. Restart management agents for this change to take effect. See restart on an ESX (KB 1003490) server management agents.

    6. Reconnect the host computer in VC (host in VI Client computer right click and select 'Connect')

Please see KB 1007899 for more details on the management of packages already registered.
