VM log in vSPhere 5.5 files

Gurus of the attention:

I'm confused about something, I just read in a VMware KB: VMware KB: Log rotation and logging to vmware.log options

Here it is:

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/null the parameter log.rotateSize

By default, the virtual machine logfile ( vmware.log) turned due to the operation power on or off the power of the virtual machine.

To configure log rotation based on the size of the file, include this option in the .vmx of the virtual machine file:

log.rotateSize = < maximum size in bytes of the file can reach >

Note:

  1. The default value is 0 or unlimited.
  2. This parameter is only supported in the host before ESXi 5.1

NOTE that I held #2 above in bold and underlined, it.  It's for real?  You cannot adjust this setting in 5.1?   It must be a mistake, because I created the parameter and value. but there isn't anyway to confirm his work unless I have wait forever and the monitor.  FAKE.

VMware someone who knows what the story is with this chime please in and provides some certainty to the following:

(1) what is the default if the 5.1 and 5.5 for the virtual machine file paper regarding the size and rotation

(2) is this a mistake in the article that declares the parameter above is not supported, and it is not taken in charge, then, how is the rotation of newspaper for a fitting VM.

I recently saw VM logs as large as 1 GB in size at a customer, I want to set up a quick script to change this, because many have and there are scripts available, but when I look at the scripts that have been developed, they all use this setting to set log rotation.

Please help and to get a straight answer for those who have read this KB and started scratching heads...

Thank you.

Unfortunately, it is true, rotation of newspaper has been replaced by a kind of diary of limitation. I ran into a similar problem with virtual XenApp servers where the log files continue to grow (some Go! in about a month) until the virtual machine is able to roll or vMotioned.

I downloaded the client vSphere exe file and double click it.

It shows the normal 'open file - security warning' like any what other exe and I press button 'run '.

When I run the file as an administrator, nothing happens too. nothing. as I have not yet pushed.

Why nothing is happening when I ru the vSphere Client install exe?

More questions than one. Run any software protection AV or endpoint on the host? In this case, make sure that these applications do not block installation. Even if this was not a problem with the vSphere Client - but only with VMware Workstation/Player - looking for a process of "fixcamera.exe". If this is the case, you can try to kill him before starting the installation.

  • Archived redo logs in ASM or OS file system?

    DB version: 10.2.0.4
Version of the operating system: Sun Solaris SPARC 5.10

We are on a node two CARS.
Currently, we store logs archived in BONE cross mounted file systems. This is the recommended method?
What we will have if we keep newspapers archived in ASM?

Ideally, the location of the log archive must be on a shared volume. In solaris, you can use ASM as the shared diskgroup.
When using the common diskgroup say + ARCH / (you can choose your own name diskgroup, but for the ease I posted like this) for archiving logs, two instances can write to the same location.
Need a recovery and restore operation, you can simply restore the archivelogs ASM and run recovery.

Well, there are some other well explained by the experts here. I just did a unique advantage.

    Kind regards
    Mahesh.

  • SRM plugin has me re - authenticate each time after I have logged in vSphere client?

After I authenticate the client vSphere and then proceed to the section of Site recovery, I wonder to be re - authenticate the vCenter recovery.

Is it possible to store my credentials, so I sign in twice now when I need for activities of MRS?  Once for vsphere client, and then back to recovery vcenter as SRM is plugged.

    Thank you.

This is a normal activity and there is not yet a cache for the other site identification method, would be awesome to have device assuming that the remote site is located in the area of trust or A.D. even.

You can change the location of the log with a setting of essbase.cfg

If you want to change the location of the ODL files, then you need to change the logging.xml file in bin to essbase.

  • Expectations extended on synchronization of log file while the parallel writing journal is fine

We have 9.2.0.8 as experiences of long waits on the database log file sync (average waiting time = 46 ms) while waiting for the log file write Parallels is very good (average waiting time is less than 1 millisecond).

The application is of type middleware, it connects to several other applications. A single user in a single application action train several requests to send back through this middleware, so he needs response time of db in milliseconds.

    The database is quite simple:

-It has a few config tables that the application reads but rarely updated

-She has table TRANSACTION_HISTORY: the application inserts records into this table using Insert einreihig (about 100 lines per second); each insert is followed by a validation.

Records are kept for several months and then purged. The table has only column VARCHAR2/NUMBER/DATE, no LOBS, LONG, etc. The table has 4 non-unique single-column index.

The average line length is 100 bytes.

The load profile does not appear something unusual, the main figures: 110 transactions per second average transaction = 1.5 KB size.

The data below are to 1 hour interval (purge wasn't running during this interval), physical reads or writes physical rate is low:

Log buffer is about 1.3 MB. We could increase the log buffer, but there is no log buffer space waits, so I doubt this will help.

Newspapers in recovery have their own file systems, not shared with the data files. This explains the difference between waiting avg on parallel writing of log (less than 1 ms) file and db file parallel write (27 ms).

Restoring logs is 100 MB, there are about 120 journal switches per day.

What has changed: the pads/validations rate grew. Several months ago there were 25 inserts/validations per second in the TRANSACTION_HISTORY table, now get us 110 inserts/validation per second.

What problem it causes application: due to slow down the reaction of the basis of the application (Java-based) requires discussions more and more.

MOS documents on synchronization of log file (for example, 1376916,1 waits for troubleshooting "log file sync") recommend to compare the average waiting time on synchronization of log file and the log file parallel write.

If the values are close (for example log file sync = 20 ms and log file parallel write = 10 ms) so expectations are caused by nits IO. However, it is not the case here.

There was a bug (2669566) in 9.2 which resulted in underreporting lgwr parallel time of writing to the log file. I was talking about September 2005, during which the bug was present in 9.2.0.6, reported 10.1 fixed in: file parallel journal written (JL Comp) it is possible that your problem IS written to the log file.
