VMDK virtual disk to the other folder

Hello

Before I started my new job we have run into some problems with our file server, Server22, with the CPU usage. IT consulting company that has implemented suggested it was something with the installation of windows, so they created a new virtual machine named Server22 which was just the C drive and tied the former Server22 data to the new drive. By making our virtual disk data still resides in the file of old Server22. I want to move, but want to find the right procedure to do. Is as simple as right clicking and pressing on "move to" browser data store? I've attached a screenshot of what I'm trying to do. I would like to move Server22.vmdk in the Server22_1 folder to the NewServer22 folder.

Thank you

Hi, you cannot move the vmdk while the virtual machine is running.  Here's a high-level steps:

  1. stop the virtual machine
  2. detach the vmdk in question.
  3. move the vmdk into the desired folder.
  4. Fix again the vmdk.
  5. Turn on the virtual machine.

Once you have completed the move and happy with the results, you can rename the c# VM and perform storage vmotion and everything should correspond correctly with the name.

Is it possible to have the VMware fusion virtual disk appears as a hard drive on your mac desktop, so you can browse the files of the virtual disk of the Mac operating system?

I connect to the shared Windows resources on both physical and virtual machines from my Mac and it is immaterial that the target physical or virtual as the same rules and or methods apply and as I said before it is covered in the two operating systems help files and this isn't really a matter of the merger itself.

    Hello!

I have a data with RAID10 store in my Virtual Center and I would like to create the computer virtual with Windows Server 2008R2/2012R2 for MS SQL Database. It has Microsoft recommendation for the separate SQL data and log files on different disks for performance benefits. What do you think is true for disks vmdk virtual, that is in the same database in Virtual Center? Or I don't take no profit?

    Thank you!

    Hello

    msolovey,

Welcome to the community of VMware,

Performance wise, it won't make a difference since it is a single data store. for the purposes of management, you can create a different VMDK and separate files.

Instead, you can save the logs on all NFS shares or local disks if you have a.

  • adaptation of the virtual machine in the other place

    Hello

In one of our vmware servers we show you two data warehouses. 1 for the VM running and 1 store backup data on another location.

The backup I do by hand with a copy command on the prompt of the server. It works well, but I have a little problem. The disk of the virtual machine are thin provided (for example 6 GB) but when I make a copy of data backup-store command tot they get the same size (40 GB).

I use the command cp with the sparse function, but it does not work.

    Anybode any idea?

    Thank you

You cp for all files except the vmdk files.

For those, you can use vmkfstools.

  • Virtual Disk Manager "the device is not ready".

I don't know about the format from outside, possibly MAC OS EXTENDED. He was not ejected a Mac and will not mount on an operating system MAC or PC (Windows 7 Professional) using Firewire (800 to 800 and 800 to 400), eSATA and USB 2.0. When I use disk management, disk will appear as not initialized and next to the "disk 33", there is a red arrow pointing down. Whenever I open the Disk Manager, the window to initialize the disk appears, but once I chose a style of partition and press OK, the virtual disk manager pops up saying "the device is not ready". I also tried to wipe the drive using CMD, (disc of DiskPart/list / select disk 33/clean), CMD said the drive was clean, but when I went to disk management, without change.

I'm looking for a way to clean the drive so that it can be reformatted and reused.

  • S130 rebuild with 2 virtual disks on the same disk array

    Hi all

    I have 6 drives 750 GB sata in raid 10 with a s130 controller.

There is a 100 GB virtual disk and a virtual disk of 2 TB.

One of the drives has failed, so I replaced it with a new drive.

I have assigned the new disc on the first virtual disk, and this re-built very well. But he'll also let me assign the remaining space on the new disk on the second virtual drive in the table, it is said that there is no available free disk?

    What can I do here?

    Thank you

    Hi NET1K

It seems that the hard drive that is not in the disk of your virtual disk group 2 (VD).

You may need to put the reader that you have assigned to rebuild the first VD and assign it as a global hot spare to rebuild your disk, instead of virtual disk group offline.

Before doing the procedure reversed, please backup you made recent data.

  • Machine virtual hard disk (virtual disk) of the upper size limit put into service

Hi there, so I'm trying to create a hard drive or a virtual disk in a Virtual Machine in order to configure the virtual machine as a file server. The data store is a Promise VTrak M610P and I installed the vtrak as a type of VMFS5 5,46 TB of space (4 2 hard disks to each RAID 5). In the virtual machine, I added a hard drive and selected the store data vtrak and tried to set the provisioned to 5.46 TB size and type thick lazy disposition to zero, but I get an error of DiskCapControl with the range values. I changed the size set in service and 4 TB and he accepted the new hard drive. I can't find anything on the actual limit on the creation of hard disk in a virtual computer.

    I'm running a server Supermicro X7DAL-E with VMware ESXi 5.5 U2.

Any ideas would be useful. Thank you.

I forgot I asked a similar question on a different section of the forum (shame on me), but I found a solution. Please see the following post Re: SMB access using esxi host and manage with MS server 2008 storage

Here's what I wrote on the link above:

So it turns out that there seems to be something wrong with vClient when you add a hard disk (virtual disk) to a virtual machine of size greater than 4 TB. Article VMware KB: value of range error message when you add more than 4 TB capacity discs in vSphere Client describes this if you encounter this problem, add the hard drive via vSphere CLI, CLI power or vmkfstools. So this seems to be a known issue on vClient. What I ended up doing was using vClient, creation of hard disk, adding to the virtual machine (size of the hard drive is to 5.45) and when I would get the error message on the DiskCapControl out of reach, I would just click OK and then finalize the creation of the hard drive on the virtual machine. Once the process is complete, I selected the virtual machine and noticed that he indeed added a new HDD size 5.45 TB even if he's complained about it. I pulled to the top of the virtual machine with windows server 2008 R2 installed and was able to create a new disk under windows and set it up as a shared drive on the network. Looks like vClient must be updated by VMware and correct this bug, if it's a bug that I think. Thank you for the help vervoort!

  • How to correlate the virtual disk on the disk of OS

I need to remove one of the virtual virtual machine disks. The problem is that I have two identical drives, more they are on Rible virtual scsi adapters so if I look at the properties of disks in disk management, they are both targets ID 0. Is there another way to correlate the virtual disk belongs to disk inside the BONE?

    W2K8R2

    TIA

    Troy

Since this is often not easy to understand, I usually create each disc with a slightly different size. That said, resize one of the disks (for example add 1 GB virtual disk) and you will be able to identify the disk that you want to remove.

now I can not remove the disc from the virtual machine.

ESX 4.1 does not see the now broken iSCSI storage.

    See attach.

Remove the virtual machine from the inventory and edit VMX manually deleting the reference to this disk. After that, add the machine virtual back again for the inventory.

I have a file on a cd - rw that I try to copy to a different folder, I open the file, but how can I get the new folder the long side so I can drag and drop

    Hi tommckeith,

    ·         What version of the operating system is installed on the computer?

    ·         You try to move the file on the CD to the computer or inside the CD?

If you want to move the file on the CD for computer, follow the steps in the article.

Move and copy files using drag and drop

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/move-and-copy-files-using-drag-and-drop

    Copy and paste a file

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/copy-and-paste-a-file

If you try to move the file to the CD, then it is not possible to make changes on the data stored in the CD. You must copy the data to the computer, and then make the necessary changes. You can also make the changes before saving the data to a CD.

  • Convert a RDM a VMDK (virtual disk)

We are currently running vSphere/ESX 4 and EMC SAN.  Our SAN is replaced by an updated model.  Dell/EMC will perform the data migration and recently told us that if we want to keep our RDM they would be able to copy their bit to bit.  Which means that we cannot change our size of the LUN.

They told us to move our existing data to LUN more (or less) that we need to convert our RDMs VMDK.

We currently have three separate virtual computer that will connect to a RDM on SAN (Exchange, SQL, and a file server).

Is it possible to convert the RDM in VMDK?  If so, how?

I searched the forums and has been unable to find an answer.

Keep your support ticket opened until the problem is solved - you did update the VMware Support?

If you have not changed the search preferences, you will need to click on the name of the folder next to "this Mac.

It should list all the MP3 files.  Select all and drag to the external hard drive.

  • Try to copy one virtual centre to the other clusters

    Hello

I'm new in the world of windows and have to migrate a virtual centre 5.1 older than 5.5.  I'm running into a problem with the copy of the clusters of the virtual center more a new using powercli and hoped someone on this list can help you.  Here's what I'm trying to do:

(please let me know if there is a way better to clone the cluster information to one virtual centre to another)

    --

    $SourceClusters = get-Datacenter RWC - vc01 Server | Get-Cluster-Server vc01

    {foreach ($SourceCluster to $SourceClusters)

    New-Cluster - name $SourceCluster.Name - location "RWC" - Server vc02 - DRSEnabled - DRSautomationlevel "PartiallyAutomated" - confirm: $false

    }

    --

However when I run the present I get the following error messages:

    (a) not found VIContainer with name RWC - which I know exists and is my Datacenter name

    (b) setting New-Cluster VIContainer: did not find any object specified by its name.  I know that the first command get-data center returns valid cluster name so don't know why it shows as empty.

    All that I'm missing here.

  • Passing a datacenter ASM disks to the other for the other machine

If we closing the db and disks are moved from the data center A to b. can easily turn us on these starts on the servers in the data center in B?

I guess that's possible... so after the disks are moved to data center B. From the point of view oracle, just need to ADD the ASM_DISK_GROUPS parameter name diskgroup and mount?

ASM labels are written on the disc itself. If all disks in a diskgroup in ASM are intact and compatible version wise with this instance of the DSO, this instance can mount the diskgroup.

Yes. Also assuming, on the side of the o/s physical, ASM has the required access on these discs.

Beware of the how the disks are moved however. If these discs are 'affected unduly' by the admins of storage when the zoning/LUN masking/that it is them, they will corrupt the data on it - and ASM will be unable to use these discs.
