VMware-tools backward compatible? hosts of U4 3.5 and 3.5

I have 10 ESX host servers that were the base 3.5 install, I put 4 update on one or two guests at a time. I'll be quick vMotioning invited around (2 out of 10 are empty at the moment). My question is, when I VMotion over and update of vmware-tools on the guests, are there cautions I need to know?

I know that I can test it myself, in the short term, but there may be cases where a guest with update of vmware-tools will have to be postponed on a variety of pre - U4 and sat there for 48 to 72 hours and is a production environment.

Yes, they are compatible back. You can migrate the virtual machine to a host that is not U4 after upgrade vmware tools to release U4.

VMware tools are retro-compatible? Previous fixes and improvements I've seen in 3.5, I saw some differences in version and everything seems to work very well. If they are retro-compatible then could strengthen the tools to the version of vSphere on my VM 3.5. My upgrade process would be as follows:

    1. Network Config backup: netsh interface dump & gt; c:\ipconfig.txt

    2. Install vSphere VMtools on 3,5 VM. (How could I do this on a farm of 3.5?)
      Manually?)

    3. Turn off the virtual computer.

    4. Move VM to vSphere host.

    5. Upgrade virtual machine hardware.

    6. Virtual machine power.

    7. Restore network configuration: netsh exec c:\ipconfig.txt

    8. Restart again under the name nessary to plug and pray the questions.

We are not concerned by the Mac, addresses only the IP addresses.

    Thank you

Mount the tools in a ramdom VM for the NEW ESX 4.0, while tools appears in the form of a disk, copy this content somewhere on your network.

Now your VM ESX 3.5 locate the network share and run the VM tools from there, voila!

    Yes, they are retro-compatible.

  • Install vmware tools on the linux host offline

    Hello world

I run a Fedora 10 VM using vmware player 3.1.2 on a crowd of Ubuntu 10.04. I'm trying to install vmware tools, but my host doesn't have access to the internet.  I've seen a few posts on how to install vmware tools offline on a windows host (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/245195), but the advice given may not be valid for linux hosts.  I downloaded vmware-tools-linux - 8.4.4 - 301548.x86_64.component.tar of http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/ but this tar file contains a .component file (not an .iso that post said).  My question is what I should do with the .component file to install vmware tools?

    Thanks in advance,

    -Jordaan

    Hi Jordaan,

    Welcome to the forums.

    Try the following:

    -Unzip the downloaded file

  • AutoFit Guest stopped working after update the VMWare Tools

I've updated Workstation version 8 to 10.  I had several virtual machines of Windows 7 x 64 I then updated with the latest VMWare tools (v9.6.1.1378637).  Now, one of the virtual machines will not automatically resize correctly.  (Three other virtual machines with the same o/s resize correctly and with Windows Server 2008 resizes correctly.)  Workstation is set to Autosize > Autofit guest.  The resized correctly VM before VMWare Tools has been updated.  In other words, the auto resizing feature worked for the virtual machine within the 10 workstation when the previous version of VMWare Tools was installed.  Upgrade VMWare Tools triggered behavior.  When I use the 'Fit Guest Now' view of the virtual machine command flashes but does not resize.  When the my computer window is resized, the prompt is not resized.

    I tried the following:

    • Uninstalled and reinstalled VMWare tools.
    • Confirmed VMWare Tools (vmtoolsd.exe) is set to start automatically and runs.
    • Changed the display of the virtual machine settings to a custom resolution and then to 'host to use setting for monitors '.
    • Attempted to change the resolution of the guest, but he won't go high 1920 x 1440 (it should be set to 2556 x 1496 based on the resolution of the other virtual machines that resize correctly).

    Thanks for your suggestions!

Update of material compatibility on the virtual machine to which auto resize has stopped working has helped auto resize again.  Hardware compatibility was 6, 5-7.x.  I've updated to be compatible with 10.

The question remains as to why three other similar virtual machines (with the same compatibility level of 6, 5-7.x) should not be updated so that the automatic resizing to work.

I didn't want to answer my own question but hope this helps people who have encountered this particular problem.

  • Installation of the VMware tools on PCLinuxOS comments

    Hi all

I started to play with VMware player (version 6.0.3). I made a new virtual machine and install PCLinuxOS on it. I now want to install VMware tools on this comment, so I click on the drive-> manage-> install VMware tools. However, nothing seems to happen, and I've waited more than an hour. When I click on the drive-> manage according to me, it is said (download VMware tools). The host and the VM guest have access to internet. Could be blocking download, or in any way I can solve the problem? Thank you very much for your help - J

You are running on Windows or Linux, VMware Player host? If you are running on the WIndows host, download the file: http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/6.0.3/1895310/windows/packages/tools-linux-9.6.2.exe.tar

Extract the. EXE file and run it. EXE file on host it will silently install the ISO Images of VMware Tools in the working directory of VMware Player.

After that, try to reinstall the VMware Tools on VM, simply go to the menu player-> manage-> install VMware Tools.

  • How to install VMWARE tools in ESXi VirtualHost?

Just-VCP5-VTC review first attempt scored 184 little weak feeling... is in any case I have server with 16 GB of memory and processors R710 Dual Core Quad and 4 TB of storage with raid 0 which gives me two 2 TB built in Lun with raid 5 OS mirrored disks. Have installed ESXi server and created 4 VMS 1 VC, 1 ms and 2 linux machine I will use as ESXi servers for clustering; HA; DRS etc.

I am struggling to install the vmware tools on virtual hosts esxi; can't seem to get the media using the mount command? I installed vmware tools on other virtual machines to linux without problem...

VMware Tools are not available or supported on ESXi virtual hosts.

BTW. I'm a bit confused about the "... and have 4 TB of storage with raid 0 which gives me two 2 TB built in Lun with raid 5 OS mirrored disks...» ». Assuming that you have 4 disks, not do you have configured them in 3 RAID5 disks with a backup?

  • How to install VMware Tools in Ubuntu guest with no Internet connectivity?

I need to install VMware Tools in a Guest Ubuntu (10.04) running in VMware Player.

The machine on which it is running has no internet access; It is part of an isolated network.

I know there are a LOT of instructions on how to do it, and it seems that they all begin with "mount your ISO file...". ' or "click"Install VMware Tools..."."

Of course, I have not and cannot find a file ISO of VMware tools for Ubuntu.  I admit that I can be looked in the wrong place, but I watched several times and have spent many hours on it.   I tried Open VM Tools as well and followed the instructions included, but orders did not produce the responses described.

When I click on "Install VMware Tools" the machine just made several attempts to connect to a server that will never happen.

Although it does not prove that I know what I'm doing, I installed VMware Tools on several hosts of Windows XP.  For some reason, I was able to find many versions of VMware Tools for Windows ISO.  The installation worked everytime with very little hair loss.

Thanks for any help on this eternal question.

You will need to download the ISO images for the VMware Tools installation media at least once, on a computer with internet access.  Player menu--> File--> Preferences of the player.  Click on the button download now all components.  Once complete, there will be 6 ISO files in the folder of the player.  You can copy them to the same location on the PC that you are currently underway.  Then, you can follow the instructions to install VMware Tools in a Linux Guest, located in the help file.

  • upgrade vmware tools with orchestrator

I still have many armies ESXi 3.5 although I updated my environment to ESX 4 3/4.  The task of rehabilitation for the vmware tools upgrade does not work for virtual machines running on esx 3.5.  Can orchestrator automate the task of upgrading vmware tools on a host ESX 3.5 and reboot the virtual machine.  Does anyone have an example to help out me with?  I know probably possible, but I have just install Orchestrator and did nothing with it yet.  I was thinking that this may be a task well start with.

vCO server comes with a plug-in of VC4.0 with which you can configure some hosts/VC only 4.0 and later versions. In order to run workflows on ESX 3.5 hosts, you need to install the plug-in, VI3.5 there in vCO/extras/plugins server. The file has the extension VMOAPP, you can change to .jar then check out the plugin VI3.5 .dar file. After installing correctly, you can then drill library of built-in workflow, for the category of the VMware Tools, which you can find the upgrade tools workflow. It would automate the up-gradation of the tools, as long as the toolsAutoUpdateSupported is set to true in the virtual machine. In addition, this API works successfully if the tools are not updated. For ESX 3.5 hosts, you must run the workflow in the VMS VIM3 management category.

    Hope it will be useful.

  • How can I get a version of VMWare Tools?

I'm having trouble installing a guest operating system (see post) previous to yesterday.

Having VMWare tools on the host affects the installation of comments?

If yes how to make a copy of this?  I am an eval customer and do not see it on the site.

    Thank you

Inside my computer, there is a menu option that allows you to install tools:-> VM install VMware Tools.

When you have selected which, your guests will have an attached CD image and then you can install the tools from the.  Machine virtual Windows will be AutoPlay for the CD and for the most part, it's automatic.  Machines virtual Linux must be installed manually.  I think that there is a rpm and a. tar.gz on the image of linux tools.  For a linux VM, you will certainly have the kernel sources for the kernel running in the virtual machine very convenient and probably thus xorg-devel packages.

  • Intall the guest operating system updates or VMware Tools first?

I have the OS (Windows 2000 Professional), which comes with all the major updates to release all the way until 2010. Goes for the installation order, do I install the first updates (requires Direct X 9.0 c as well), or the first VMware tools?

    Thank you for all responses.

I'm not aware of a formal recommendation. I usually install VMware Tools after the installation of the guest OS and never encountered any problems with this approach to date.
