vSphere 5.1. NetApp Flash Accel tips

Hi all

Got a crowd 4 live / 3 vSphere installation 5.1 Dr. host with back end on both Netapp and am a student to deploy Netapp Flash Accel

Host servers are HP Pro DL380P Gen 8.  Undecided on whether to use the SSD in a Setup raid1 or dedicated PCI-E to somehow flash card.  Sought to use Kingston SSD E100 100 GB disks

Whoever did this or similar already and is there anything I need to look out for gotcha general?

See you soon

I can make the decision easy for you.

Marked NetApp Flash Accel as end of availability on March 13. If you do not have the ability to deploy it not more. Downloads are no longer available and existing facilities will not be supported after this year.

It's funny because he had released a new version (1.3) only a few weeks before and have been strongly touting it as central to their level of virtual storage.

No explanation or warning and for customers like me who just bought tens of thousands of dollars of value of SSDS with a goal from the use of this technology, a pill bitter to swallow.

I have responsibility for the revision of the current player flash video of base for a major media company and would like to comment.

We need to own/control the code as much as possible, and the site will have a dynamic playlist.

    QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE:

What flex role play video streaming?

It's better to just Flash 8? (for video)

There are major improvements in flash video? We should just stick with the technology of our current solution (similar to the link above)

How can we make it scalable and easy to maintain.

Can we contact Macromedia consultant? Or search for somone from the outside?

We integrate this in ASP.NET 2.0

What flex role play video streaming?

Nothing whatsoever. Flex is for data management and has no Centre for the audio or video stream. I guess you could use Flex to manage your playlists and other data, but you use a different technology to serve video files.

It's better to just Flash 8? (for video)

I think it makes sense to target Flashplayer 8, as the first version with the codec VP6 Om2 Traoré, I found to be far superior to the old Sorenson Spark codec in terms of band bandwidth value. To get the Flash 8 video really useless Flash 8, authoring tool. There are a lot of video conversion software out there that will generate encoded VP6 .flv

There are major improvements in flash video? We should just stick with the technology of our current solution (similar to the link above)

I guess the key improvement is the new codec. I prefer to use Flash on other technologies such as wm, mov and rm because I like to have control over the environment, in that the video is displayed.

How can we make it scalable and easy to maintain.

Depends on how you are to the video service. With Flash, you can either stream the video with Flash Media Server, or you can use progressive download (video is served via http). With progressive, move you your deployment, just as you would for any other resource Web site. With FMS, you would write your own code to string together servers, or you use the origin/Edge model in the FMS architecture (origin/edge requires a large initial investment for the license). In the end, it is fairly easy to scale an application flash video.

Can we contact Macromedia consultant? Or search for somone from the outside?

If you want to buy software, contact Adobe. If you want support, you can also contact Adobe but I wouldn't hold my breath. I've heard a lot of reports of people not getting answers for FMS related questions. I would say the best way to go is to find you a Flash developer well qualified to manage everything beyond the purchase of the required software.

  • How to remove the msg: "consolidation of disks of virtual machines is necessary."

    Hi all

I implement vSphere 5, and I have the following message displayed in the vCenter (virtual machine Summary tab). Does anyone know how to remove the message without consolidating the snapshot?
    ----------------------------------------------------
"Consolidation of disks of virtual machines is necessary."
    ----------------------------------------------------

I think vCenter is detect the Delta for this virtual machine and warning me that I have to consolidate the snapshot. However, I do not want to consolidate the snapshot because the database is still running when the snapshot was taken, and there is a great chance that the data will be corrupt when I consolidate this delta disk file.

I looked towards the top of the Knowledge Base, but it does not say how to stop the message without actually consolidate the snapshot.

the message will disappear as soon as snapshots are consolidated.  There is no way to remove the message otherwise.  Just think of it as a reminder that the snapshots should be engaged.

  • ESXi 4.1 or ESXi 5.0 with iSCSI SAN

    Hello

I'm trying to establishing an environment that is / will be an iSCSI SAN backend entirely.  I know of a lot of reading that the best practice is to config the ESXi host with:

VMKernel > vmnic > physical network adapter > switch ports > port on SAN (config 1:1 - no grouping of vmnic)

    Environment:

    ESXi 4.1 & 5.0

    Force10 switches

    EqualLogic iSCSI SAN (PS4000 & 6000)

Here's my real question (playing the Devil's advocate):

Why I shouldn't team 3-4 vnmics on a vswitch with multiple vmkernel ports?

Given my environment.  Can someone point me to a technical document that explains what will / could happen if I set up the environment ESXi in this way?

    Thank you

    BDAboy22

So, basically, we want the SAN to take full responsibility for the failover instead of the network and/or the SAN for who should resolve the failure (which could lead to the time of restitutio in integrum longer session).   I understand that correctly?

Yes, that's right, we want to stack storage for vSphere manage with path selection and tipping - and by connecting each vmknic directly to the physical vmnic map we sort of "simulate" how to CF cards and also ignores the network failover mechanisms. As you probably know you also need to "bind" the iSCSI Software to the two vmnic (GUI now in 5.0, esxcli in 4.x)

  • Should CBT - I enable overall?

We have more than 300 virtual machines under VSphere 4.1 NetApp storage. I have read many post about the benefits of activation CBT and be able to follow the rate of change of our virtual machines would be a huge advantage. What are the low sides allow the CBT for all virtual machines? Are there special things I should look or do before you activate it? There the disk i/o or other consequences?

    Thank you!

I do not think that CBT which will accomplish for you. I see it used backup of virtual machine software (for example, Veeam): the file ctk software addicts know then what has changed on the virtual machine and grab only those changed blocks.

Typically, in a NetApp environment with contension IO, I check that the self-support of the reports on the NetApp as a starting point to identify problems of LUN/volume/aggr and also examine the Ops values ARE / s and latency in vCenter on virtual machines.

  • Alignment of the Partitions

    Hello

    Can you help me?

How am I align my partitions on my guest?

And the same alignment 2008 and 2003?

    And what about SQL comments?

    THX

You must align your VMFS partition if it is not done automatically (if create you them via vSphere Center on NetAPP or EMC SAN devices) and partitions of your comments. For the scores of comments, refer to the documents from the vendors. Microsoft has released some.

    Read this, page 26: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/Perf_Best_Practices_vSphere4.0.pdf

As much as I KNOW 2003 and 2008 should be aligned by default.

What storage do you use. NetAPP has tools to check and align.

  • Trend ServerProtect Real Time Scan kills Performance

I've just virtualized a Windows 2003/Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 server on a host of vSphere with a NetApp FAS2020 using NAS as the data store where the virtual machine is stored.  There is no other guests of the VM on the host for the moment and the NetApp is not still used for other purposes (i.e. nothing should be taxing the material).  I found that ServerProtect V5.58 time real scan running on the Citrix server limits the CPU at a constant 100% once about 8 users are connected.  If I disable the real-time scanning, everything goes back to normal.

Clearly, I must be able to protect users from malicious software Citrix sessions.  What is the best way to achieve this with Citrix/Terminal Server VMware?

Someone at - it a version more recent ServerProtect or even OfficeScan running successfully within Citrix/Terminal Services hosted on VMware?

    Thank you

    Hello

    Moved to the Security Forum.

Reinstall the trend after a P2V could help but maybe not.

Trend also made programs specifically for virtualization and vSphere that will do A / V of the analyses using the API that will not also drastically affect performance vStorage, it's something to look into. Maybe but not 'real time' will allow better overall analysis.

  • Tip action DOES not work in the Flash output

    Hello

I created a module in line with Captivate 9 using an advanced conditional action to display the button at the end of 2 sections.

The trigger works well in the release of HTML5, but it does not work in the Flash output: users need to go back to the slide with the action advanced a second time in order to show the next button.

It is the created tip action:

    advanced_action.png

    Help, please. Thank you

    Lisa

Change the order in the updated standard measure jump to slide as last order, or at least after the command of the increment.  The actions are executed in sequence, if you jump first to this slide, where the on enter event is executed, the variable has not yet been incremented. Try to see if it solves the problem. HTML is different from SWF to react (it is converted to JS so that SWF to ACE).

You post the screenshot of the timeline.

Moreover, as I have indicated already, I would add continue to the part of the TIME as well as the ELSE part. I learned that, in certain circumstances, a conditional action with that one decision, and no ELSE part does not work well. It is not a problem if you have several decisions.

  • Apply several effects to an object in a tip Action / Flash output

    Hello

Played around with the application of effects through advanced Actions. It seems that if a tip Action is put in place to apply multiple effects on the same object, only the last effect in the sequence of commands executed in the tip action (possible / far right) would play when Flash is published. This should or am I missing something here?

Doesn't seem to be a problem when publishing to HTML5.

It is very old, but except for the changes in the user interface, the custom effects still work the same way:

Trajectories and custom effects reuse - Captivate blog Edition

Three steps (even that has not changed yet):

    1. Create effects stacked as time-based effect. Look at this timeline
    2. Save the effect (there is now a disk button), remove the three effects stacked, then apply the custom effect (use the Browse button). This is necessary for your custom effect see when using the effect of applying advanced actions order
    3. Use apply effect and you will see a new category "Custom" from which you can choose the custom effect. I did not test how changes in the duration effect those stacked, sorry.
  • Confirming that vsphere 6 requires flash and does not support a customer to RHEL6/firefox?

    Hello

Assuming that you have enough free disk space on the host ESXI 5.1 data store, I suggest you that you load the multiextent module as shown in the link, I posted and then clone the virtual disk using the vmkfstools command line utility.

    vmkfstools 'Windows w2k3.vmdk'-i 'clone.vmdk' slim-d - an ide

    vmkfstools EI 'Windows w2k3.vmdk' 'old.vmdk '.

    vmkfstools EI "clone.vmdk" "Windows w2k3.vmdk".

The first line of the clones of the virtual disk in a virtual drive put in service end format, and the following two lines renaming virtual disks, so that you can delete the "old*.vmdk" files once the VM works as expected.

Alternatively, you can also run the commands on the host ESXi 4.1 and then copy the new files hard again to avoid loading the multiextent module in the new host.

  • read flash vSphere cache: cannot add capacity

    Hello

I'm trying to implement flash vSphere read cache to test performance, but when I try to 'Add ability', disc SSD of my host are not listed.

I tried several parameters like disassemble, reassemble, etc... and they appear in the configuration of the storage of the host...

    Any idea?

    Thanks in advance.

    Thx for your answer.

Problem is now solved. It wasn't the case of not marked as SSD, but readers was not recognized as local drives.

Changed that with esxcli command, and then restart the hosts and the SSD will now appear in the "ability to add.

  • vSphere 5.5 Flash Read Cache

    Hello

I've updated my vCenter to 5.5 and of course one of the interesting improvements is read Cache Flash. I installed the SSDS and could see in vSphere client Web and must now assign space to read flash for virtual machines.

How would you do the assignment of value to flash for virtual machines read cache. I know that it discharge of the I/O to the San, but don't know how to calculate the number in the UK for actually entry.

Does rely on the size of vmdk machine what kind of storage access.

How do you calculate how much read cache to give a particular virtual machine or if it's trial and error

    Thank you very much

This will give you a better understanding and best practices to the size of the cache in your environment.

  • NetApp FAS2040 space Distribution for vSphere 5

    Hi all

I have a NetApp2040 with 8 (3 reserved for the root of aggr0) 300 GB internal drives and 1 shelf DS14 MK2 to tie with 14 hard drives of 250 GB. I have 2 5.1 vSphere hosts. What would be the best way to "split" the storage for servers? A combined, the two hosts can access via iSCSI or more than one aggregate? I have not a NFS for the NetApp for iSCSI license is my method of connection. All suggestions welcome. Thank you.

I'd be inclined to agree with vmroyale - I prefer an aggr to avoid extra parity and disk dparity losses. As long as your OnTAP argues that many discs (I don't remember 7.34 and older max/min values).
