  I was told that do not use character and paragraph styles makes the files 'unstable '. So everything we manually change is in danger to be changed apparently at random. I have worked in hundreds of InDesign files for several months and have never seen a problem where this is indeed the case. I did a quick search online and on these forums, but I've not found anything directly related to what will happen if the styles have been changed manually. So, what happens if you do not use character and paragraph styles?

  I don't see that there is nothing "unstable" do not use styles, but as mentioned, they make your life easier by providing a single place to make changes that affect all the text containing the tag with the style.

  An important feature/reason for the use of the character styles is that they take precedence over paragraph styles, if a particular word needs to be styled differently to surrounding text, bolded or italicized, for example, you can add a character style that modifies only the bold or italic style type. Subsequent changes to the paragraph style will affect the face and size, if these attributes are changed, but leave your word in bold or italics, bold or italic. If you use "local formatting" (select the word, and apply the formatting) you may lose when styles to change or remove overrides, which is probably the 'random change' you have heard.

• problem with the Finder - files and folders displaying incorrectly

  After acquiring a new iMac, I noticed a problem with the Finder - files and folders are displayed wrong (see table).

  This is what happens always after the files have been transferred from one folder to another. I was reminded of my days of using Mac OS in the 1980s when automatic setting of files was not so "automatic." I use Mac OS for decades and I don't remember the last time I had to think about GUI problems like that.

  Other problems in the graphical display of files and folders were introduced, such as when you have hundreds of files in a single folder, you end up deleting about 30 to 40 of them say in a particular section, and you end up with gaps of the ChartSpace where files used to be, that is the remaining files automatically rearrange themselves (fill in these gaps) - never. A week later, you open the folder, and the gap of GUI is still there.

  I decided to do a clean install of the operating system but nothing works.

  Looks like your folder icons are not accommodating themselves automatically you plan to do. To me, this indicates that you have organize by the None value in the view menu. You can change the way files and folders are prepared automatically by clicking on view > reorganize by and selecting how you would like that fixed.

• Files and folders in root appear in my folder of Documents and office

  It probably happens on the Windows NT-based versions (has happened to me on a XP PC and a PC in 2000 that I intend to upgrade both of them soon). The files and folders of the program directory (C :) root Windows upward in the office and the folder My Documents. These files are not shortcuts and they show that they are located in the root of the drive, even if they appear on the desktop and My Documents. They can be handled then that mirrored to the root of the drive. I dropped a simple file to the root one test while it appears on the locations and then I deleted the file of the said test from the office and he left root.   That is some progress.  Normally the desktop folder works the same way, where he will have a "location" at the top of the Properties tab.  This is a feature you'll see normally special "shell folders" as this (shell being the part of the operating system that see you, or the user interface).

  If it has lost its distinctive feature, you can usually restore it quickly in the registry.

  1. First of all, make sure that you have a folder that is named "Desktop" in your personal folder 'username '. You will set the registry to use this folder as storage of office location.
  2. Keep Windows Logo type R to display the run box, type REGEDIT and click OK and give permission to the administrator if necessary.
  3. Navigate through the list of files (registry keys) on the left to find this place:
     HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
  4. Look for the "Desktop" entry on the right (registry value), and double-click it to change data to be:
     %UserProfile%\desktop

     The %UserProfile% is a variable that is everywhere where your current profile is stored.  Administrators and power users can use it to move their entire profile without having to define all those places individually.

  5. Click OK to save it, and then close the registry editor.
  6. Lot of windows completely and reconnect of re - initialize your user profiles and folder locations. Or just restart your computer, either way :)

  At this point, right click and properties of the desktop folder should now have the expected location tab (let me know if not).

  If you ever want to move these places, a little advice: make sure that you have specified a folder name.  In other words, do not place your Documents to store in just the G: drive. Instead, create a folder on the target drive and don't forget in the location (such as G:\Docs).  One last thing: don't try to define both 'special' folders to be stored at the same single physical location (do not set two in the same place).

  Here is a picture of this registry on Windows 10 location, but these steps are the same, all the way back to Windows 2000 (maybe sooner).

• Files and folders with the same name

  I am trying to unzip some files and folders and it works fine on my computer with Windows XP. However, when you use Windows Vista I can't because there are folders and files with the same name. After an internet search, it seems that the only suggestion is to extract the files in separate folders which then would allow them to keep the same name. The problem is I want what they in the same folder and they need to have the names they have.

  NOTE: I do have two files with the same name in the same folder, I have a folder and a file with the same name. I would have thought that this would be acceptable because they are two things separate, and given that it's great under XP.

  You are right, if I make a file and a text file with the same name, it works fine. However, when I try to extract the files I need it tells me that there is already a file with the same name as the folder. He goes to tell me to choose a new name but my only options are 'try again', 'jump' or 'Cancel '.

  I think I can understand what the problem is. For some reason when you download the zip file, the computer seems to have added a few files side with any format other than "file." It is those who have the same name as the folders as if they were, and they could not be uncompressed because of this. I have no idea whence they came as they appear from nowhere (compared to my XP). I'm trying now unzip the files separately and exclude the strange s 'file '.

  Because it's a new account (even if with the same name), the restore procedure is unable to put files and folders in the same place, they came (because this place technically no longer - if yes, then the process is done and the transfer is complete). It can create a set of separate files (maybe even under a new user name, if it has been stored in this way).  If so, all you need to do is copy the data as you would copy any other files and folders (not the main files of the user profile themselves but the data in them) on the new files in your user account and who will take care of the transfer. Here is more information about the restore procedure which may help you in the process.

  Here is an article on the restore procedure:http://www.vista4beginners.com/How-to-restore-files to make sure you do this right.  It's a selective restore of a full or selective backup (not a full restore from a full backup) - but since you did a full backup, it matches your process more closely than would a full restore.
