What is a "desktop.ini" file and why it is part of every folder on my drive network hard?

I have Windows vista (64-bit).  I have a WD HDD connected to a linksys E4200 wireless router. I created a music network hard disk, and every time I transfer or rip music to this reader, this "desktop.ini" file appear also in the context of each case.  Is this OK to delete this file?

Desktop.ini is a hidden file, use of Windows operating systems to store folder settings. For example, you have created a music library so desktop.ini will contain the settings to indicate to the user interface to display the files in the folder differently from a normal folder. It will also contain parameters of the custom icons and names.

You can delete the file if you wish; point negative only consequence will be the loss of these parameters/customization.

I want to know the meaning of desktop.ini, I remove cause it's to show in most of my documents?

Your thread was started successfully in the forum comments, so I moved it to the windows 'Repair and recovery' forum where is is more on the subject.  You must return to your topic and we tell which version of Windows you are using.

Look in your startup folder to see if you see Lync and modem.exe shortcuts in this folder.  If so, remove them and you should no longer see these pop-ups when you connect.

You can get rid of him, but it can return.  Desktop.ini is usually a file hidden, so you must have the display of hidden files and folders active if you do not see it.  Desktop.ini is a file that is present in many files and it is used by the process to "customize the folder.  It allows you to specify multiple behaviors to a folder and what desired icon displayed for a folder.  See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc144102(v=vs.85).aspx for a more in-depth explanation of the desktop.ini file.  For certain folders such as My Documents, you should probably leave it alone.  It won't hurt anything especially if you do remove it, but the folder will then behave like any other folder, you can create.

  • desktop.ini files are showing even after masking the BONES protected files and they are everywhere

Everything is almost described in the title

Out of nowhere this "desktop.ini" file started appearing in almost all of the folders and delete them changes icons of folders where they exist in the settings and I found that the only way to hide them is to hide one in each folder specially after finding that they are not considered "BONES protected files" by the system or it was to hide just after masking "Protected OS files" but cache the one by one is not the best option to consider, although unlike the real "desktop.ini file" in the Users\User\Desktop folder that is considered protected operating system file and mask normally with the protected operating system files.

Now, I want to just hide in a process that is not separately if possible please.

    For more details:

-The content of the original "desktop.ini" file in the Users\User\Desktop folder is different from those non-hidden other those as follows:

    Original title: C://Windows/Assembly/GAC/desktop.ini

A scan has detected a Trojan horse in the C://WINDOWS/assembly/GAC/Desktop.ini file but I can't access this file because it is hidden.

What is a VRU, what should I do?

    Hello

    1. You scan of bases of safety of Microsoft or any other security software installed on the computer?

Enable the option Show hidden files and see if you can correctly view the contents of the files.

I suggest you analyze your computer Microsoft Safety Scanner, it will help us to get rid of viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner ends 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

    Hope this information is useful.

  • desktop.ini files

files desktop.ini appeared on my desktop and after deleting the desktop.ini files it is files/folders that im getting APPLICATION DATA NOT ACCESSIBLE. ACCESS DENIED error message. I also get records that have a blue arrow on it, but these records are not on my computer before. This all started after my sister, transfer photos to my laptop. pls hel

Do you know when this problem started?  Try a system restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem started.  Here is the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/.  Don't forget to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points.  If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two.  NOTE: You will need to re - install any software and updates that you have installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for updates. You may need to re - download the pictures, but the restoration of the system normally does not affect data files so it's probably not necessary.

BTW, do not delete the desktop.ini file - this is important.

    I hope this helps.

What is this Google plugin Widevine, and why can't find it in my Mac Finder? You should have a right click on the Add-ons, to 'show in Finder '!

Although it's called a plugin, it is not one plugin like any other that you can find in a file, but a piece of embedded code. Other plugins are often part of the operating system or systemic at least installed, as opposed to extensions. However you can disable - see content DRM Watch on Firefox for instructions.

  • What happens to my music files and libraries as soon as apple Unassigns itunes?

What happens to my music files and libraries as soon as apple Unassigns itunes?

What makes you think that apple will stop downgrade iTunes? They make him billions.

Even if they did whatever it is already downloaded would continue to work and all etc CDs you imported will also continue to work.

The most likely scenario is that you have an older version of Windows (or Mac OS X), that cannot run the latest version of iTunes. If this is used, you'd still be able to run the old version already installed iTunes and still access your existing files. This applies to Windows XP for example.

    Hi pdaamckechnie,

The ASF Format (Advanced Systems) is the preferred Windows Media file format. With Windows Media Player, if the appropriate codecs are installed on your computer, you can play audio content, video content, or both, that is compressed with a wide variety of codecs and that is stored in an .asf file.

You can check the link below for more information on the types of media files that supports Windows Media Player

    Hi Jack,

This driver belongs to AsIO.sys Asus Probe. Try to uninstall Asus Probe and if you need, install again. If this does not help, uninstall Asus Probe and other tools of control such as Speedfan. Open the registry (regedit.exe) editor and search for AsIO.sys and remove all the entries that you can find.

    Hello

Do not delete anything because you can't get rid of the virus by deleting everything simply. You should run a virus scan. Make sure you have an antivirus premium so that you will be protected.
