What is the best way to restore virtual machines after a refresh of the server

Hi all

First time poster here. A group of people at my work have their own VMWare environment which they install later. It has 3 virtual machines running on it, and they want to set up a fourth. Unfortunately the new machine, they want to put in place is going to be almost 1 TB in size, and they initially setup the VMFS datastore to 1 MB, which means that a machine can be as large as 256GB.

Research, it seems that there is absolutely no way to work around this problem, except to redo the data store. Is this correct? If this is the case, I was looking at a way to save the three current machines and to reload them after it is updated. A way that I thought was to go browse the data store and copy all the files on my local machine to the virtual machine (.nvram, hard, .vmx etx... all the files), wipeout and redo the ESXi host with the correct setting of data store, build the machines VMS in vSphere, and then replace the files with those copied. This works perfectly? I don't see a lot of information out there about it and I want to make sure that I have not to spoil the VMs. This environment consists of 1 ESXi host with all the local storage (2 TB).

Also, if anyone knows a better way to do this, please feel free to give your comments. I would really appreciate it.

Thank you

Hello

Welcome to the community!

Yes, unfortunately there no way to change the block size of the datastore to vmfs without reformatting.

I have

Yes, it will work. You have just to copy all files in this VMFS datastore to a place safe and download once the block size has increased. Once the download is complete, navigate to the virtual machine, the virtual machine folder right click and save the VMX.

You can find the steps to change the size of the block VMFS in this KB. VMware KB: block the size of a VMFS data store limitations

  • Restore virtual machines after building the new RAID array

    Hi all

I am new to the virtual machines, so I'm sorry for the newbie question. Currently, I have a HP ML350 G6 ESXi 5.0.0 running on 4 GB Flash hosting SD cards two virtual machines and licenses for 5 Essentials vSphere and vCenter Server 5 Essentials. I also have a RAID5 configuration with drives SAS 146 GB (6). I intend to remove all six readers and their replacement by 300 GB disks and build a RAID6 array. My question is, what would be the best practice to move the two VMS in the current RAID array to the new RAID array? Wouldn't be also simple to make backups of virtual machines or clones, exchanging the readers, the new array of construction and restoring virtual machines? If someone could point me in the right direction would be great!

    Thank you all!

Personally, I would go with backup & restore. In addition, use the downtime to upgrade the firmware of the host (HP published recently a few critical fixes on the RAID controller and some models of HARD drive).

What I would do - to avoid any problem - is to remove the host ESXi, vCenter, replace disks, update the firmware, re - install ESXi and as final step add the host to vCenter again.

  • Best way to backup virtual machines?

I'm under Fusion 2.0.4. I recently acquired an external hard drive and I want to backup my virtual machines. I watched the tutorial of Fusion which suggested using Time Machine, but I read that restoring a virtual computer from a TM backup could cause problems. Is this true? If so, should I simply create a file duplicate and save that to the external hard drive? What is the best way to back up the virtual machine?

Note: I use shared folders to save the documents, photos, etc., but would like to save the entire guest operating system.

First AutoProtect is not the same, nor intended to be a copy of backup of the virtual machine and Time Machine knows a lot of backup and restore of Virtual Machines under certain conditions and should not be relied on as the only method of recovery.

While Time Machine can back up and restore a virtual machine with success there are a number of conditions that can cause this to fail and without warning, and therefore it is not considered reliable for backup of Virtual Machines under normal conditions.

AFAIC backup is valid that a virtual machine is when it is done with stop the Virtual Machine, not suspended and closed merger and the entire Virtual Machine is copied to another location in which one has a little bit duplicate of the complete set of the VM total at this point in time and nothing less realized by Time Machine by manually and not separate and apart from the files of the time Machine.  Note: The script process is providing that the conditions are met.

  • Best way to migrate virtual machines to new ESXi hosts with a different configuration of networking.

We currently have a cluster of 6 Dell machines that move VM 120 or so on ESXi 5.5. Networking consists of a dVswitch with 6 uplinks that map to 6 x 1gig physical NETWORK adapters on each host ESXi... These are grouped into 3 trunks / gal, so we have 2 GB by SHIFTING of the bandwidth and failover. The LAGS are configured as follows:

    LAG1

Traffic to our (NFS) shared data store and management of ESXi. (vmk0)

    LAG2

Access to the network of the VM - groups of different ports on different VLANS

    LAG3

    vMotion (vmk1)

We just bought 6 new Dell machines that have connections fiber 2 x 10gig each. The idea is to bring together in a 20Ggig LAG by machine that will handle all of the traffic, so traffic NFS data store, network traffic from the VM, vMotion and traffic management ESXi.

What is the best way to migrate the virtual machine in the cluster existing to the new machines? Many of the virtual machine are essential, so we cannot stop time.

Can I create the new DELAY on existing dVswitch and put it as an auxiliary card? I'll be able to do it for all 3 of the above both above LAGS?

Thanks for the info Alistar, it's almost here. The bit that was me stumping was that after establishing a new dVswitch I received messages that the new dvSwitch was not reachable on the old host, when I tried to migrate the virtual computer.

The solution (with the permission of VMware Support) was that I need to add the two dVswitches to one of the old hosts, then assign a physical alternative on this host uplink to a temporary 3 uplink on the new dVswitch. I then tag all the relevant VLAN that uplink.

This way I can first migrate the virtual machine to the new dVswitch networking so I can move the computer to the new cluster.

Obviously I can only migrate from old to new cluster with a single host. each virtual machine must be a double for the host with 2 switches, and then to the new cluster. I also had to have the two dVswitches to the same version.

Fortunately, I had a physical rising spare on the hosts of the old, otherwise I would have had to break one of the trunks and re-use of one of these uplinks.

Oh and be aware, impossible to use the same names for groups of ports 2 DV switches, they must be unique!

    Thanks for your help,

If you have shared storage - expose the storahe where virtual machines are stored to both sets of guests - and the hosts are ocmpatible you can vmotion - or at least - to stop the mover VM's from the environment of the UCS and add it to the HP environment.

If you can't share the storage you - you can use VMwate Standalone converter and V2V the VMs-

  • Cannot repair the photo library. The best way to restore from iCloud library?

The photo library of the system is damaged and cannot be repaired.

It is said "Photos has attempted to repair the library"Pictures Library 2015 ", but can not open it." .

I first met problems with this library a week before and at the time where I could repair and open the library successfully, but lacked a month value of photos.

Given that it was successfully in the iCloud library, I left it to re - sync - but this process suspended several times before the end, and the photo library of the system now seems to be permanently damaged.

I have no project of marked or impression of faces in the photo library of the system, then I would be happy just to restore from iCloud.

My plan is to put in place a new - empty - library and then that designate the library of the system.

If I understand this right, the new (empty) system Photo library will now resynchronize with iCloud and will copy all the contents of this library of back to my Mac.

Is this correct? It is the most effective way to restore my library?

And while I'm here - what is the best way to manage a very large library? I had my photo library become corrupted ten three or four times over the past years and have found it necessary to divide into single years to prevent this. I overlooked this piece of household by the end of 2015, and now it's happened again... Surely, there must be an easier way to manage libraries of images of several years?

Is this correct? It is the most effective way to restore my library?

Yes, if you don't have a useful upward on your Mac.

And while I'm here - what is the best way to manage a very large library? How do you call a large library, I've never had a corrupt Library, I think that your problems are not the result of the size of the library, but rather something else. From my experience it is recommended to maintain a local upward, I use Time machine, but also have a second to the top using a third-party backup solution.

  • Unable to start the virtual machine after restoration

    Vm problem: 32-bit, Server 2003

I use Veeam Backup & Restore 6.5 to back up my vm.  I always do a test restore to ensure that my backups are good.  I'm having a problem with a restore.  The 32-bit Server 2003 vm starts just fine on the main host it runs on.  All the vm are 64-bit except for one who is a 32-bit Server 2003 vm.  Restoring the machine virtual and implemented on a host except the 32-Bit vm Server 2003 test.  After restoration and trying power to the top, I get the following error:

Unable to start the virtual machine.

Turn on VPCM module has failed.

Viewed performance counters require version 3 or greater of architectural performance monitoring.

Anyone know if there is a fix for this problem?

    TIA,

    Mux

I assume you are using different hardware (CPUs, the BIOS settings) for VMS restored!

The virtual machine has VPCM enabled, which causes the problem. You can either disable it in vSphere Web Client (you can do this in the vSphere Client Windows), or directly modify the .vmx VM by setting vpmc.enable to "FALSE".

For how toggle this setting in the Web Client see allow virtual in the Web Client vSphere CPU Performance counters. If you want to edit the .vmx file manually, you need to delete/re-add the VM from the inventory or recharge (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1026043)

  • What is considered high Kbps for a virtual machine?

I try to analyse some virtual machines to determine how they use disk latency. VMware performance dashboards I collect graphs showing Kbps on an individual basis of the VM. I see very significant differences on existing virtual machines.

I have two virtual machines that have hit an average of 2000 to 300 Kbps but peaks up to 20000 and 3000.

What is considered as high Kbps?

I know that this manufacturer of disk and the type of Raid is a factor here. EMC tools monitor the latency of disk IO of reading and writing, and I do not know how to make the link between these in Kbps.

    Thanks for any info here.

Then, your best bet is to use ESXTOP to the command line and drill down through the HBA view.  First of all understand that vmhba is the LUN you want to watch and then explore the vmhba railways until you can get the world ID's of the virtual machine on the LUN.

Unfortunately then you will have to play the game to figure out that VM is what ID World expanding views and... It's just a really annoying process.  I hope that you would not have to do.  I wish that VMware had a simple view of the LUN VM WITH name.  The drive see esxtop frankly sucks.

If anyone knows a better way to achieve this, please chime.

  • What is this its HostPortGroupPort - visdk java virtual machine?

    Thank you very much.

I think the best way to understand what exchanges connected to a virtual computer is going host-> vm network

    http://www.VMware.com/support/developer/VC-SDK/visdk25pubs/ReferenceGuide/Vim.network.html

You will get MoRef to your host's network and then for each portgroup you will be able to determine which VM is connected

18 customers running Win2k3 servers and Oracle on RHEL 3 servers

2 X SAN DELL MD3000i with two controllers (active / active).

Question: Last night, when the backup of VCB, we lost the SAN n ° 1 completely (two controllers at the same time).

We have a few customers with Microsoft Raid 1 (1 on San 1 and 1 drive on San 2).  guests in mirror mode survived 40 minutes after the San n ° 1 crashed.

After checking saves files I found that: ESX shutdowned guests due to a problem with the snapshot.

I feel really bad this morning... because I told my boss we're safe if we lose 1 SAN because we are mirrored on 2 SAN.

Why stop ESX invited after problems with snapshots. Also, we received a lot of Virtual Center with false alert alarms (virtual machine does not).

ESX filled 800 megs of log files in a few minutes with the same message (path fails, try another a blabla).

What the purpose of putting my guests in mirror mode stop ESX if my guests after losing the path during backup?

    Hello

    Conclusion?

If SAN #1 accident during the VCB backup, you're dead?

If you use software raid within the virtual machine is then SAN1 dies, the VM will crash because the Bank of support file (this case a delta) is no longer available and there is no way to read or write data even.

Software RAID does not apply to things outside of the virtual machine. A solution would be to have a device that can do Raid through mirroring without.

  • Network down frequently on a virtual machine after the upgrade of computers host and vmware to win 10

    Dear all,

A week ago, I upgraded both my two machines VMWare Win 7 to win 10, as well as the host operating system. also from 7 to 10.

Now once every 1 or 2 days, one or both the two vmwares aura an esclamation mark on the network status icon in the lower right corner and West no connection.

The host operating system is NOT having any problems with the network.

The solution is to disable and reactive the adapter to virtual machines, or repair of running Network Diagnostics where she'll tell me that it s has reinstated the connection to the bridge. But obviously I´d prefer the VM´s to be on the internet 24/7 without my intervention.

I have another computer on the same router on which I did the same thing, but with this I m not having these problems. A different and not connected equipment via the VPN running on the host OS, which is the case with the machine that s had questions.

But even once, the host operating system is not having issues, the two VM´s aren´t always the two to have this problem, and this never happened when he was all Win 7.

I ve disabled some nights windows defender analysis and TCP/IP V6, but neither helped.

Want to see some of the information from the last network diagnostics / repair or some log file, or you already know what would be the solution to my problem?

    Thanks in advance!

    Best regards

    Jazzl

Well, I thought that a vm was having this problem a lot more often than the other, so I looked for error messages in windows journal, showing that the network problem - have to with DHCP btw - always spent 2 minutes after an event regarding slui.exe, not found on the other machine.

What I also noticed was that the problematic vm had lost its activation of windows with the upgrade to win 10 (win 10 has limits to how much the same license can be run as virtual machines), is is not the case for the more successful one.

Then I copied the good machine, which contains the same as the other, changed mac and uuid and now it s showing that enabled, no problem so far.

  • You can dial space provisioned end back to a virtual machine after the fact in vCenter

I know you the converter stand-alone to get there, but I can't seem to do this in vCenter himself. Basically I have a model of Windows operating system that has a vDisk containing the boot partition thin value 100 GB provisioned. It is in fact only using a little less 15GB and I want to do this cut in half and make it thin 50 GB provisioned. What is the best way to do that is clean?

Alternatively, you can use vmware to the fret converter

I can't do anything else until I get comments. Can anyone recommend a way to solve this problem?

I thought I knew what I was doing, but apparently not...

    I agree

Two a problem with the new drive.

    1. You get the error message comes from the basic disk with a different size than the disks of the snapshot.
    2. With a size of 256 GB, you will not be able to create snapshots of the disk (on ESXi prior to 5.0 with a block size of 1 MB)

What you can try to do is to edit the file PJAEast - DL01_1.vmdk :

    • 536870912 VMFS 'PJAEast-DL01_1 - flat hard' RW--> RW 70943040 VMFS 'PJAEast-DL01_1 - flat hard. "
    • DDB. Geometry.Cylinders = "33418'-> ddb.geometry.cylinders = '4416.

After that, I would recommend to clone the virtual disk to a new one, replace the virtual disk in the virtual machine settings and resize it to a maximum of 254GB (see "calculates the time system required by the snapshot files" at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384)

    • vmkfstools-i PJAEast-DL01_1 - 000003.vmdk PJAEast - DL01_1a.vmdk

  • Restore virtual machines with Netbackup and VCB

I just Netbackup 6.5.2 and using VCB 1.5.  When I create my backups, it makes the .img files.  When I try to restore using Netbackup, it won't recognize backups from windows NT and not Flash.  And VM converter does not recognize the .img files.  So, how can I restore, what am I am I doing wrong?

Hello.  The NetBackup .img files are not accessible directly.  They are used internally by NetBackup.

When the only restore files vmdk (virtual machine complete), NetBackup 6.5.2 supports two types of restorations.  First of all, you can automatically perform a restore of the entire virtual machine by using the free VMware Converter component.  The second method involves all first restore VMware vmdk and then manually by your restoration.
